Warm waterproof coat - holy grail?

So I started a new job this year which involves a train commute, having stood on the platform this morning in the freezing cold, wind and rain I have decided a need a warm, cosy and waterproof coat before the winter. After a quick search Didrikson and Merrell coats seem to come up recommended but which design in particular? Also the Merrell website has hardly any coats - am I too early? And yes I know it's still August but I'm in Scotland and it really was cold this morning!

Thanks ladies x

I think they will bring in some warmer ones in a few months time.

The arctic parka is lovely - but still expensive even in the sales.

carrielou2007 · 22/08/2014 03:34

Barbour Arctic parka the one I bought is warm, waterproof and gorgeous. Mine was in the sale in March this year ready for winter Wink

Ooh lots of lovely links! Thanks all, will look when I get home!

Also off to the rather warmer climes of Florida next week but just know I'll be freezing when I get home. Are any of these brands linked to likely to be cheaper in the USA?!

Seasalt do some great coats

I've got a landsend squall coat right down to my knees

Oly4 · 22/08/2014 14:40

I am getting the north face arctic parka. My pal has one and swears by it

Twinklestein · 22/08/2014 14:49

Northface are not particularly warm, bit of a con.

I've got a Marmot pure down coat - much warmer and an Aigle Cuckmere

Both are better than Northface.

I have the Lands End Commuter Coat. I haven't worn it yet, as I got it half price in the Spring Sale, but I bought it on the recommendation of a very outdoorsy Northern friend who swears by it.

SixImpossible · 22/08/2014 14:58

I think Lands End are American!

Bunbaker · 22/08/2014 15:07

I have a brilliant Craghoppers coat that is both warm and waterproof. Not just showerproof, but waterproof. I wore it all last winter. Unfortunately Craghoppers don't have any women's coats on their website yet. I suspect it is too early in the year still.

Ladyofthehouse · 22/08/2014 15:11

I have to vote for a merrell as well....invested in mine last year....completely waterproof and didn't feel cold once! I love it!

TheHouseofMirth · 22/08/2014 15:25

I love my Aigle when it's really, really cold and my Barbour for when it's wet but not freezing , though actually it's surprisingly warm.

Merrell haven is warm and properly waterproof, but not stylish

I've just got this. It seems great and is a bargain at the moment.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 22/08/2014 18:06

I was waiting for this thread too! I've been coveting an Isle Jacobson but I wasn't sure how warm they are... I'm the coldest person I know, so I need a duvet, but can't do down filled as I'm chronically allergic.

DottiM · 22/08/2014 22:34

I have this one which is similar to the North Face one. Usual retails at £120 but I got it for £65 on ebay. They still have them.

Warm waterproof coat - holy grail?
DottiM · 22/08/2014 22:37

That one I posted above is a total duvet. Down and feather and a big generous hood that keeps my completely covered. Comes down to just above my knees. Wish I had got it ten years ago instead of the silly fashion coats I have been wearing. I live in the mountains in North Wales and it is chilly here to OP and I have worn mine already.

DottiM · 22/08/2014 22:38

Houseofmirth that coat is a darling. I love it and want one, now!

trashcanjunkie · 23/08/2014 00:26

Dotti I think I have a very similar coat! Mine is from LTS.

PacificDogwood · 23/08/2014 11:32

Having invested in the NorthFace coat last year, I really cannot justify another one, but now I really want the Aigle - in red.
Darn this thread Angry

I've got a, Didrikson coat not sure which and cannot recommend them enough. It's very toasty. I'm looking for an about mid thigh waterproof only coat. Don't want another warm one. Have a short berghaus but that makes me feel sweaty.

Any ideas?

pebblestack · 23/08/2014 12:03

I have a Craghoppers too. Cheaper than Aigle et al, smart enough for commuting and kept me super warm and dry at numerous pitchsides last winter.

pebblestack · 23/08/2014 12:04

oh and although the Aigle one is very lovely, it's not waterproof
