Would you wear a cross necklace as a fashion item?

So I really like cross pendants but am not an enthusiastic church goer.

If I wear a cross pendant will people automatically assume that I am a religious person hope not?

I did when I was young in the 80's. Nowadays I wouldn't want people to misunderstand and think I'm religious.

Personally, no, it was a bit 1980s (madonna type look) and I was around in the 80s as a teenager so I can't revisit it. (I didn't wear one, my parents are Baptists )

If someone wore a discreet gold cross, I'd assume they were wearing as a religious icon.
If they wore a huge crystal encrusted piece, I'd assume they were taking the piss trying to be ironic.

A huge blingy one I might see as a fashion statement. A smaller metal one I'd think was a religious statement.

I would avoid, as I am atheist.

I've got a small diamond one which I haven't worn for about a decade really, silly really because it's lovely.

I would, and I do every day. It's a diamond set one I was bought for my 40th and I love it.

I am the least religious person you will ever meet. Nobody has ever looked at it and assumed anything about me, AFAIK.

Depends on what you are wearing - if you are a goth wearing a cross I would assume it was a fashion item! If you are just wearing, say, a small gold cross then yes I might well assume you are religious to some degree. Not sure why this would be divisive though?

I'm an atheist and wear one every day but my dad got it for me when I was about 13 so mine has some sentimental value . I wouldn't assume someone was necessarily religious for wearing one .

Divisive as I wouldn't be wearing it as a religious symbol so I wonder if either someone who is Christian would find it a little bit inappropriate (profane?) or someone who belongs to a different religion would feel like it creates a barrier. Please don't flame I am just insecure / uncertain about it so wanted to find out other people's views.

I think this is something you shouldn't worry about.

I have a lovely garnet cross that I bought when I was about 20 just because it was pretty. I haven't worn it in about 15 yrs though in case people mistake me for a Christian.

I wouldn't wear one as I'm an atheist - I just wouldn't find a religious symbol appealing, tbh. I feel like it's a little disrespectful to make a fashion accessory out of other people's faith.

I see what you're saying, Any. Starting to think about it now... It's definitely more of a personal thing for me. Crosses are just strongly associated with religion for me. I think I wouldn't wear a cross because I had quite strict Greek Orthodox grandparents who wanted me to have one - I hated going to Greek Orthodox Church and I knew that personally, I didn't believe in god. So no cross for me, and probably no rousing Greek wedding either.

However, I wouldn't assume anybody wearing a cross was a Christian or even religious.

No. I have a lovely cross necklace but since becoming an atheist I have stopped wearing it. I wouldn't have statues of Buddha or Mary for the same reason, I don't believe in those faiths so why would I have artefacts from them?
