Would you wear a cross necklace as a fashion item?

So I really like cross pendants but am not an enthusiastic church goer.

If I wear a cross pendant will people automatically assume that I am a religious person hope not?

What MrsAtticus said.

Hakluyt · 19/08/2014 20:31

I have re read all my posts, Any Fucker, and I honestly can't see anything offensive. Please could you show me?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 20:32

I must admit, I read your posts as suggesting you had a bit of a grudge against Christians, and/or were very suspicious of them. I was a bit confused too.

Not to suggest you might not have your reasons, of course, but I doubt most people wearing jewellery need to be checked out for possible dark purposes.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2014 20:34

I am reluctant to quote you, Hak as it is unusual for S+B to descent into a she said/you said kerfuffly derailment but this one stood out to me

Hakluyt Tue 19-Aug-14 15:05:17

Well, with respect, it is rather Christians' fault if people think they have "deep seated views around certain issues"

What with them being so outspoken about them and all................

AnyFucker · 19/08/2014 20:34

Not just me then.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 20:36

I myself am such an outspoken Christian people regularly attempt to convert me, being convinced I have no religious faith.

That's with the cross on or without, btw. Smile

Incidentally, this is what my cross looked like. Granted the background is rather horrible and mine was silver, not gold, but do reassure me it's the sort of thing I'd only have liked in a sentimental way? I wish I hadn't lost it.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2014 20:38

That's kinda nice, in a Vintagey and non-blingy way.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 19/08/2014 20:39

I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to someone to think I was a Christian as I'm not/ it would feel a bit like I was pretending somehow and I think it's a bit disrespectful. I'm secular Jewish and stopped believing as a teen. I don't wear a Star of David any more (I did as an older teen) because I think it devalues it and for other reasons which wouldn't be shared with my decision to not wear a cross.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 20:48

Well that doesn't bloody help, AF! Grin It is quite nice. I'm going to see if I can find one on ebay. There must be loads of them in people's gran's jewellery boxes.

sarcastic - that's interesting, I admit I would feel differently about a star of david.

EugenesAxe · 19/08/2014 20:51

I thought the same as Thurlow; blingy probably wouldn't assume, simple I would. I wear a simple silver cross and am a Christian; Anglican not Catholic. The latter tend to wear/decorate churches with crucifixes. Don't know why but Anglican seem to be more about the rising from the dead, hence the empty cross/ death conquered.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 19/08/2014 20:54

That is quite a nice one LRD. Very Twilight.

The problem is Christianity is not one set of beliefs. So while I have many open minded, liberal Christian friends I also know some Christian people who are anti gay, anti women etc. And who deny what has happened in the Catholic Church. So I can see why some people on this thread including Hak don't want to be associated with it. Maybe we need crosses with disclaimers attached? Grin

AnyFucker · 19/08/2014 21:02

Different crosses for different folks, eh ? Smile

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 21:04

Crosses with disclaimers would be great. 'AIBU' instead of 'INRI' on mine, please.

FairPhyllis · 19/08/2014 21:06

I think that's nice LRD. 8 year old you had quite good taste.

Non-Christians wearing crosses is a total non-issue for Christians. It is not in any way appropriative. It is not in any blasphemous or profane, the cross is not a sacred object in itself.

I myself have a plain silver one and a blinged out gold and Swarovski crystal one exactly like [https://aksizo.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/k/aksizo-deal_crossbanner2-996x488.jpg this] which was a gift from my grandmother, of all people. Her tastes did tend to regularly lurch into hip-hop artist territory. I only wear it at fancy dress parties.

FairPhyllis · 19/08/2014 21:06

like this

ClaraDeLaNoche · 19/08/2014 21:07

My word I have just looked in my old old jewellery box and I have 6 crosses. A garnet one very like that last link from my goth days. I will rest easy tonight especially as I have double vampire protection with garlic in the freezer.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 21:08

Wow, that is not what I expect of grandmothers, fair! Grin

clare - aw, we must've had similar tastes back in the day. I do like some garnet. Never managed the eyeliner to go with, sadly.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2014 21:11

is garnet a birth stone ? < whistles >

ClaraDeLaNoche · 19/08/2014 21:14

Nope. A garnet is a 16 year old's diamond. Also found one earring given to me by my 14 year old boyfriend before he snogged my best friend and dumped me the bastard. Off to google him, wish me luck.

gertiegusset · 19/08/2014 21:19

I have to say I read this and have wondered why the Star of David isn't worn as a fashion item and if the cross is then why not the Star of David.
I have a small silver cross that I got when I was confirmed, I never wear it.

gertiegusset · 19/08/2014 21:21

I love garnets, I had a gypsy wedding ring given to me when I was 21, I lost it at Victoria coach station. Sad

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 19/08/2014 21:22

"Non-Christians wearing crosses is a total non-issue for Christians. It is not in any way appropriative. It is not in any blasphemous or profane, the cross is not a sacred object in itself."

I've know some rather "serious" Christians who would take offence at a cross being worn as a fashion item, as it trivialises something quite important to them (as the cross does, in general, have a religious reference). I'm neither religious nor fervent, but I know not everyone's like me, or like you Smile.

Disclaimer: if the cross was covered in big diamonds, all previous arguments go out the window and I'd very happily wear it.

MrsDavidBowie · 19/08/2014 21:23

I would wear one to an eighties fancy dress party if I went as Madonna

FairPhyllis · 19/08/2014 21:24

LRD My grandmother was very much in tune with the visual aesthetic of hip hop. Sadly she was born about 50 years too early to style a 50 Cent video.

It is not actually that big but it shines with the light of a thousand burning suns, so mainly I don't wear it for fear of blinding people.

I like garnets, they are very Late Antiquity.

noddyholder · 19/08/2014 21:25

MrsDB I live to be invited to that party (digs out fingerless lace gloves)
