Sandals comfy enough for a city break with lots of walking

DP and I are going to Italy for two weeks at the end of August/beginning of September. We will be travelling around a few cities and will be doing lots of walking so I need some sandals that will be comfy enough to wear for that. I currently live in Toms which will be too warm I think, or some strappy flip flops which are fine for pottering but not sturdy enough for the holiday.

So far the only option I can think of are Birkenstocks but are they awfully frumpy? And they seem quite expensive too, are there any deals to be had?

I have justurchased a pair of fit flops which are incredible comfy from the fist time I put them on Grin. Mine are red

ThatBloodyWoman · 13/07/2014 16:39

Teva sandals.

Gillybobs · 13/07/2014 16:46

I bought two pairs of heavenly soles sandals from Next last year and they are amazingly comfy. Similar to this. www.next.co.uk/g39230s2#650913g39

Thanks, I'll take a look at all of those!

Merrell sandals are good.

fusspot66 · 13/07/2014 16:56

Tkmaxx had some good ones yesterday.

missmartha · 13/07/2014 17:01

Birkenstocks without a doubt.

I love my Milanos, I've walked everywhere in them.

ThatBloodyWoman · 13/07/2014 17:06

I think that footbed sandals, such as birkenstocks, with just one strap over the foot are much less suited to a lot of walking than those with a double strap across.

I agree that merrell are good, and I have some super comfortable rucanor walking sandals..

Healthy feet and comfort over beauty every day of the week for me though.

Fly London Oily sandals. Comfy from the very first wear - amazing for someone who normally gets blisters really easily - and not as ugly as some walking sandals, ime.

I got some Office 'hid rout' sandals recently and found them very comfy for walking about on a city break.

VerucaInTheNutRoom · 13/07/2014 17:13

Damn autocorrect! HIDEOUT

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2014 17:17

Oily Camel? Why on earth would anybody think that was a good name for a shoe?!!!

PookBob · 13/07/2014 17:20

Keen Rose sandals, super comfy even for long walks.

Monopolice · 13/07/2014 17:21

Skecher Mary Jane Go Walks.

privetandpetunias · 13/07/2014 17:28

I found Merrell sandals are fantastic for lots of walking both around the city and on rough terrain. I have been up mountains in them quite happily.

LucyTheValiant · 13/07/2014 17:28

Oily camel! Grin

I like the Office ones but they don't look terribly sturdy. But I have seen them in the window in town and liked them so I'll try them on!

These Birkenstocks have two straps (not sure I like the colour but they are just an example!) - would they be better for walking around than the single strap ones?

I will also pop to the big outdoorsy place in town which sells a few of the walking brands mentioned up thread, thank you Smile

I wear trainers or walking shoes. I have no shame I have given up wearing sandles as they are never comfy enough. We walk a long way and I have had enough of painful feet. I slip a nice pair of shoes in my day bag and change shoes if I want to look nice rather than like a frump

bruffin · 13/07/2014 17:39

Fitflops are brilliant for walking round cities. Most comfy shes i have ever had

TheLateMrsLizCromwell · 13/07/2014 17:46

Definitely do not recommend fitflops for pavements - have twice tripped on uneven paving stones.
I found that karrimor sandals - cheapish in sports direct are comfortable and don't look too unstylish...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2014 18:00

Must admit, I prefer Converse for city walking - feet get absolutely filthy in sandals.

ZaraW · 13/07/2014 18:28

I just got some Born Juney sandals on Ebay, really comfortable. They look ok too.

MissScatterbrain · 13/07/2014 20:15

I love my arizona birkies but I wouldn't wear these for a long hard day's tramp around a hot city. Converse are great but the soles are not forgiving enough.

I am afraid I will be wearing keen sandals or merrell trainers - not very stylish but at least I won't be hobbling around on shredded feet.

BeaLola · 13/07/2014 20:44

I wear birkenstocks madrid for general day to day wear for summer but on holidaysfor lots of walking I tend to wear superga - they give me more support, plus I dont get such dirty feet and they are really comfy.

Provencalroseparadox · 13/07/2014 20:46

Friend raves about Saltwater sandals.

I would wear a pair of Havaianas tbh though
