Sandals comfy enough for a city break with lots of walking

DP and I are going to Italy for two weeks at the end of August/beginning of September. We will be travelling around a few cities and will be doing lots of walking so I need some sandals that will be comfy enough to wear for that. I currently live in Toms which will be too warm I think, or some strappy flip flops which are fine for pottering but not sturdy enough for the holiday.

So far the only option I can think of are Birkenstocks but are they awfully frumpy? And they seem quite expensive too, are there any deals to be had?

For walking around in the heat all day I always go for comfort. I wear gizeh Birkenstocks and can walk miles in them. They fit me better than eg Teva. I'm delighted they are fashionable again this year. I'm in fashion every four years or so.
You can always wear nicer ones in the evening.

I cannot work out what size I'd be in Salterwaters. I take a UK 5, thankyouplease.

ContinentalKat · 14/07/2014 20:23

Birkenstocks are great, but if you want to do lots of walkout you need some cushioning.
Admittedly not the most fashionable, but perfect for traipsing around Roman ruins: www.clarks.co.uk/p/20358284

bigTillyMint · 14/07/2014 20:25

Birkies are the best. I can also wear them for miles, and every day!

Phineyj · 14/07/2014 20:31

I love Hotter Comfort Concept - have not tried their sandals but am willing to bet they're as good as their other types of shoe.

polyhymnia · 14/07/2014 20:32

I go to Italy a lot and walk round cities etc a lot and law at use Fitflops for that - the ones which are 'proper' sandals with no toe post and an adjustable strap at back - this year wore the Bon Easy on a recent trip there.

I have only tripped on a pavement once in now nearly a decade of walking in them and I'm not sure that was the sandals' fault.

polyhymnia · 14/07/2014 20:33

'law at' = always!

museumum · 14/07/2014 20:36

Teva Capri are the best flat strappy leather sandal ever anywhere hands-down no question.
(Can you tell how much I love them??)

Lagoonablue · 14/07/2014 20:37

I would buy proper walking sandals such as Merrell as suggested. Or stick to trainers with socks. I know both sound uncool but honestly i would never schlep around in Birkenstocks or fit flops other than for a few metres. You need sensible shoes to save your feet!

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 14/07/2014 20:40

Agree with Polyhymnia

Notmaisieinmorningside · 14/07/2014 21:02

museumum those Tevas look great - how soft is the leather though? Anything less than butter-soft shreds my feet...

Rainydayblues · 14/07/2014 21:26

Saltwaters give the best blister free city option, not cushioned but light and comfy. Arizona Birkies are fine if they are leather upper - the vegan upper version rubs and blisters my feet.

museumum · 14/07/2014 22:21

notmaisie - they are the only sandals except for the original ugly tevas that have never rubbed me once. All shoes rub my feet usually except when worn with thick tights or socks. These are AMAZING!!!!

ElephantsNeverForgive · 14/07/2014 22:29

DSIS swears by hotter sandals, but only the black ones are tolerable. Great if you live in black linen trousers in an air conditioned office.

Less great with my more summery coloured wardrobe.

Notmaisieinmorningside · 15/07/2014 06:50

Thanks Museumum - they sound like a must buy.

Bohemond · 15/07/2014 07:56

Agree with elephants. Take a look at Hotter - many styles in many colours, typically leather and made in the UK. I go for long walks in mine.

StandsOnGoldenSands · 15/07/2014 09:06

Ghetto - I am between a 5 and a 6. Ordered 6, fits perfectly. I think their sizing system is unnecessarily overcomplicated tbh.

dirtyprettything · 15/07/2014 09:33

walking sandals from merrell are great - maybe not super stylish but they will look after your feet

I got some plain black leather sandals in the hush puppy sale which do me walking round london all day, flat but cushioned

ShesARumUn · 15/07/2014 10:08

Ghetto - I am UK size 5 and wear Saltwaters size 5

KatoPotato · 15/07/2014 10:10

Birkies need serious breaking in before walking distances, but once you've cracked them they are like walking on clouds!

burnishedsilver · 15/07/2014 10:12

Definitely fit flops. Ive avoided them this long because I dont like the look of them but ive given in. Omg theyre comfortable.

BeCool · 15/07/2014 10:51

In could walk around the world in Birkenstocks.
Patent ones are 'dressier'

PrimalLass · 15/07/2014 11:16

I have these in silver, and can walk miles in them.
