What should I wear over my wedding dress if it's cold?

I'm getting married in September and although I'm hoping for summery weather, I'm not relying on it. I'm wearing this dress.

I'm 29 (will be 30 by the wedding), a size 16, and pale with ginger hair. The dress is loads more 'bridey' than I had expected to go for but I love the shape it gives me. I thought I'd pick something tea-length and retro looking as that's a bit more my style. The wedding colours are grey and yellow.

I'm just not sure what to wear over it. A shawl or pashmina just feels a bit old fashioned and traditional. So I've been thinking of a yellow or grey cardigan, to make it a bit more casual?

That is utterly lovely! To my eye it does have a vintage feel so I'd be very, very tempted to go with a lovely shawl, I think it'd really compliment the dress and maybe it could become a christening heirloom

I think a cardigan will spoil the look but a shawl or pashmina will be lovely. I'd just be a little concerned about finding the right colour.

Bright yellow or baby yellow? I reckon that could work really well if the yellow isn't too pale.
I had a wedding dress very similar to this and had a bright red shawl (matching the bridesmaid dresses), it worked really well and was warm enough for my October wedding. I mostly liked it because a shawl was really easy to put on and off and didn't need smoothing over so it sat nicely (I had a bow & ribbon at the back of my dress) so wasn't too much faff.

Pashmina options

Beautiful dress! It's lovely and unique but also manages to be elegant and classy.
I wouldn't wear anything over it. Adrenalin will shield you from the cold.

If you know a knitter or crocheter, now might be a good time to get friendly and see if they can rustle up a little something for you.

That is one gorgeous dress. To be honest I doubt you will feel the cold. My dress was strapless and we were outside for pictures (in the rain) but I didn't really care. Monsoon used to do some nice bits though so worth looking there. Have you got the dress at home so you can try different cardis etc?

I've sort of discounted anything crochet as the top is all lace and I'd thought that the two textures would be too busy?

I take what's been said about cardigans, I think I'm just retreating to my comfort zone in shoving a little cardi on over whatever I'm wearing.

The yellow I was thinking of is fairly bright, definitely not pastel, but not egg yolky either. A sunny yellow.

I think a white (faux) fur shrug is the way to go.
A friend wore one at her wedding in October and it was gorgeous. Totally vintage looking, maybe you could get a vintage brooch to fasten it with.

Please don't wear a cardigan with that beautiful dress, it would be a travesty.

I had a similar dress and chose a faux fur shrug - although I was in February, so definitely needed warmth! I found that knitted things didn't complement the lace whereas fur didn't 'fight' with the high lace neck, if that makes sense. Sure you can get grey/silver faux fur if you did fancy something like that

I think ballet wrap styles work well over a wedding dress. I had a lace chiffon one, as my dress was quite plain and a friend had a very sweet angora/mohair one.

You won't be cold. You just won't. I think a light pashmina in case of emergency but you won't need it.

I had considered faux fur but thought it felt too wintry for a September wedding.

I'm a knitter so now I'm thinking I could knit a shawl using some mohair type wool so it looks sort of like this, but yellow and shawl shaped.

And good to hear from so many that I won't feel the cold , if anything I'll probably be a bit hot and sweaty!

Stunning dress. A contrasting wrap in case you are cold would work. No cardies though! A faux fur stole would also work. But I bet you won't end up wearing anything over it.

I got married at the end of October and it was really cold. My dress was sleeveless and I didn't feel the cold at all.
You'll be fine without anything. But the fur things do look gorgeous.

Hi Dorothy I got married March last year and there was ice on the ground. My dress was strapless and I can honestly say I hardly felt the cold at all! By the photographs you'll be wearing your satisfied/relieved/excited/elated invisible jacket... I wouldn't buy or make anything as chances are you won't use it!
