What should I wear over my wedding dress if it's cold?

I'm getting married in September and although I'm hoping for summery weather, I'm not relying on it. I'm wearing this dress.

I'm 29 (will be 30 by the wedding), a size 16, and pale with ginger hair. The dress is loads more 'bridey' than I had expected to go for but I love the shape it gives me. I thought I'd pick something tea-length and retro looking as that's a bit more my style. The wedding colours are grey and yellow.

I'm just not sure what to wear over it. A shawl or pashmina just feels a bit old fashioned and traditional. So I've been thinking of a yellow or grey cardigan, to make it a bit more casual?

That dress is amazing!

Could you try a lovely Bolero? Like this? www.tiffanyrose.com/maternity/clothing/ITLIS/Italia-Bolero-(Ivory)-Long-Sleeves.html

Sorry it's maternity but I was preggers getting wed and it's more a general idea than specific. . I am a tad jealous of your beautiful dress x

Nah, as a knitter, if you make something and then end up not using it, you'll still have it and will think of your wedding every time you use it in years to come.

That's what knitters are like, and despite what everyone says I still think you're better off having something and not using it rather than regretting not making something.

Also, as an existing knitter, you might well find it relaxing to make something between now and then. Just choose a pattern that you are confident you can complete in time.

That really is a stunning dress and I PROMISE I am not just saying that. Grin
I would not wear anything yellow personally. I would wear something the same colour as the dress. I see it as a bit vintage'y too.

What bout this shrug from John Lewis

I bought an ivory bolero style cardigan from Phase Eight for my wedding (which was a March wedding and I did use it). It was quite fluffy and I pinned a vintage brooch to it.
Alternatively a fur short jacket. Doesn't have to be ivory, a fox fur would look vintagey (fake of course).
Enjoy your big day.

The one from John Lewis costs £55.

I think a home knitted shawl would look lovely. I love THIS ONE. I think it would look nice with the dress.

Your dress looks lovely.we got married in feb & I decided to walk the 5 mins to the registry office & back to the hotel for our reception.would have been more hassle to get in the car & it was nice to walk with my lovely flower girls.so as it was feb I just bought one of these m.coast-stores.com/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=10706 to fling over my shoulders if I got cold.it was great and not expensive.my dress was 50s style if that makes any difference.good luck with your search

BanjoKazooie · 28/06/2014 22:27

I really like Gingerroot 's shawl.

Bunbaker · 28/06/2014 22:39

That is probably the most beautiful wedding dress I have ever seen. It makes such a change from all those samey strapless gowns that everyone wears.

My mum made my dress, and it was in a style that I could wear a thermal vest under should the need arise, yet not spoil the look.

I hope the sun shines on your wedding day.

DorothyBastard · 28/06/2014 23:21

Oh you guys I'm glad I posted if only for all the compliments!

Gingerroots that shawl is really lovely! I'm wearing some pearl earrings from my late Nan so that would go so well. I think we may have a winner!

That shawl is bloody gorgeous! Think I will have to buy one. Thank God you've been talked out of wearing a cardi. We were about to have words Grin.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 28/06/2014 23:44

I'm sure you won't need anything. I bought several shawls and shrugs and didn't wear any of them (November wedding). I normally feel the cold but not that day

bouquetofpencils · 28/06/2014 23:45

I have that Coast shawl too! It is beautiful. I am saving it for my DDs wedding day now :)

gingerroots · 28/06/2014 23:48

Glad you look it!i have also worn mine since the weddwhen I've needed
An evening wrap - it goes with lots of things & its nice to remind you of the day grin

Effic · 28/06/2014 23:50

I got married in oct and I bought 4 meters of really heavy lace in dark emerald green, had it hemmed and wore it as shrug, shawl, headscarf etc depending on where I was and temp.
Your dress is stunning!

gingerroots · 28/06/2014 23:50

Too much wine!can't do the proper smilies :-)

colette · 28/06/2014 23:58

Dress is amazing - don't think you will need anything.( amamzing how the adrenalin keps you warm!)
If you do gingeroots option is the way to go

ouryve · 29/06/2014 00:00

You could wear either a lace bolero or a knitted lace shawl.

ouryve · 29/06/2014 00:05

Kid Silk haze would be perfect. Or a soft merino or BFL, maybe with some cashmere, and lots of lovely beads.

Anne Hanson Knitspot is well worth a look, as is Knitty.com

If you're not on ravelry, it's well worth joining to have a look at what's on offer.

clary · 29/06/2014 00:08

Lovely lovely dress. I adore that lace and the train.

You don't wear anything over it. The bride doesn't wear a coat. Or a shawl. Or a wrap. Or a cardi. Sorry. Please please don't wear a grey cardigain! (Oh I see later you say you won't!)

In my wedding pix on a chilly April day I am smiling a big smile because I was very happy. I was also rather cold and jealous of all the guests gathered round a big fire drinking Buck's Fizz It's fine.

newyearnewshoes · 29/06/2014 00:10

Absolutely beautiful dress you wi?l look sensational. Definitely not a cardigan. Perhaps a pale yellow pashmina

Follyfoot · 29/06/2014 00:16

What a wonderful dress, its so beautiful. What about a simple wrap? One of these maybe? I bought a plain ivory wrap and sewed tiny pearls onto it, was really pleased with how it turned out.

Hopefully · 29/06/2014 06:45

I wore a cardigan over my wedding dress and I really liked it, looked much more casual and 'me'. BUT my wedding dress was much less wedding dressy - I think you'd struggle to find the right cardigan for that dress.

Pollywallywinkles · 29/06/2014 08:14

That is one stunning wedding dress!

September can be very warm; I suspect you won't need anything. If you felt you needed something just incase I would go for a pashmina that is the same colour as your dress. If you can't get an exact match go for something no more than a couple of shades lighter or darker.
