What colour are you chic people wearing on your nails?

I have recently decided to get a grip, be a grown up, and paint my nails. I am generally a scruff and tired of it.

To this end I bought a classic red polish (Essie), some Seche Vite whatsit and did my nails. I was delighted! they are so shiny and lasted more than 25 seconds. Now I want to branch out with my colours.

I am going to Paris in a few days with my best friend for a long overdue toot. What would be chic on my nails? I am short, have short nails, a low key style (uniform: flat shoes, skinny navy jeans) but in my head I am quite fashiony so open to odd things Grin

I saw Bobbi Brown Navy in a mag recently and liked it but is navy a bit try hard? I am 31 so neither young nor old enough to be naturally insouciant.

MrsW that is avant garde! I read somewhere that Nails Inc not the best quality? am open to advice on brands too

The Essie I really liked. Shiny.

Lndnmummy I like coral too but feels better on toes for me - maybe because I have a slightly pink face. I sense that it's too warm for my colouring

I've got raspberry toes. Its lasted ages and is a departire from my usual summer coral. Looks good. I use Opi colours.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 19/06/2014 17:15

Orange. It's a dior one. Love brights on my nails as it cheers me up and stops me nibbling. I find orange more wearable than bright red and a change from pink.

Recommend Sally Henson products for growth help, by using as under & top. Then any colour you fancy. Barry m does some brights.

Avoid Chanel. Chip flipping quickly!

chockbic · 19/06/2014 17:16

Either deep purple or black

littlegreengloworm · 19/06/2014 17:18

I have a deep red shellac. I never go for this type of thing but I love it. So shiny too.

ab987 · 19/06/2014 17:19

nails inc grey which is actually a taupy grey.
Or one from John Lewis which is a brown/ mauve/ taupe.
Sometimes a very nude pink which is quite transparent - again JL- might be Candyfloss?
Toes deep burgundy.

UriGeller · 19/06/2014 17:20

I can't get over my matt black nail polish. Its luscious.

I also like a deep dark blood red for my toes.

Ladyofthehouse · 19/06/2014 17:21

Barry m peach Melba on my nails at the moment and had lots of compliments! They're polishes seem great to me and good value

rootypig · 19/06/2014 17:23

Oh Minnie I've had some dreadful experiences with Chanel - been bought it a couple of times as a gift - so gloopy and hard to use and didn't last. Essie has been a revelation.

Really loving the idea of deep purple chock, and thinking maybe a dark grey? Really like the deep burgundy for toes ab.

I really like shiny for brights, like smarties Grin

Do people have a separate top coat for matte nails? any recommendations?

I've got a pink pastel high gloss one from Clinique called "a different nail varnish"

It's very long lasting

MaloryArcher · 19/06/2014 17:28

Essie Bahama Mama on my fingernails. I am obsessed with this colour right now. Dark without being goth-y and looks amazing with my silver/turquoise rings.

I have Essie Peach Daiquiri on my toenails but am not loving it to be honest. I'm too pale for coral/peach shades. Going to switch to a dark raspberry pink I think.

I've got a lovely khaki green nail polish that looks great on short nails and pretty much goes with everything.

MsTwankeyToYou · 19/06/2014 17:31

Mine are glossy, piano-key black.

rootypig · 19/06/2014 17:33

are those your hands Malory? your nails are lovely! I really like the Bahama Mama. Also like the idea of khaki skiving, so I'm obviously in a sludge-y mood.

Something is telling me I can't get away with black. I think it's because I'm ungroomed spotty and still look a bit like a teenager, so it would be less chic and more sort of grubby on me. Hmm.

Nail varnish is complicated Confused

Sadly not! Although mine are pretty similar to the first pic in length and shape. Short and squoval. I can't bear long or pointy talons.

You get loads of pics like those when you google a nail polish shade Grin.

monkeysmama · 19/06/2014 17:38

I love Essie and Jessica.

I'm wearing Essie Chinchilly at the moment - it's a medium grey. I love Sunday Funday and Bazooka too for summer though I'm veering towards darks at the moment.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 19/06/2014 17:54

I've got Peach Dacquiri on my toes - so summery.

rootypig · 19/06/2014 18:03

I am lost in the Opi website! it is addictive. They have a little pretend hand that they put the colours on for you Grin

I need to sort my toes out. The nails on my hands are in fairly good condition because I never do anything to them other than cut (square). My toes are another story Confused. Am going to try the famous Vicks cure Grin

An Agnes B navy on my toes- looks great against silver slingbacks (sadly too many other people are wearing silver slingbacks though)

I don't wear nail polish on my fingers but I buff them though.

rootypig · 19/06/2014 19:14

An Agnes B navy must be the pinnacle of chic, *Mignonette!! is this something I can / should buy in Paree?
