What colour are you chic people wearing on your nails?

I have recently decided to get a grip, be a grown up, and paint my nails. I am generally a scruff and tired of it.

To this end I bought a classic red polish (Essie), some Seche Vite whatsit and did my nails. I was delighted! they are so shiny and lasted more than 25 seconds. Now I want to branch out with my colours.

I am going to Paris in a few days with my best friend for a long overdue toot. What would be chic on my nails? I am short, have short nails, a low key style (uniform: flat shoes, skinny navy jeans) but in my head I am quite fashiony so open to odd things

I saw Bobbi Brown Navy in a mag recently and liked it but is navy a bit try hard? I am 31 so neither young nor old enough to be naturally insouciant.

Toes are Essie's Meet Me at Sunset: a great orange-red. There's no age limit on coloured toes. I'm 57 and regularly choose slightly off the wall colours! Yellow was not a great success, though DS(14) liked the Beach Bum Blue and the Hematite! Fingers are generally just buffed or French.

Report: I bought the Barry M matte top coat (three quid!) and Essie midnight cami, which is a dark blue, almost black, with a sparkle, but I'm planning to matte it. I couldn't find lots of the colours / brands I was hoping for in the backwater small city I live in but am planning an assault on London asap

I've got Essie Chubby Cheeks on my toes, I'm struggling to describe it but it's much more forgiving on my pale northern feet than straight-up coral.

A England is amazing stuff. The shimmery ones are out of this world, it lasts really well too.

I have occasionally picked up OPI colours in pound shops so it's worth keeping an eye out.

I'm just about to redo fingers and toes in a coral shade (Laura Mercier - can't remember exact colour name). I'm just back from holiday abroad with a nice natural tan so can carry off coral for about a fortnight until I fade back to pasty white.

I'm wearing A England's dancing with Nureyev on my fingers. Agree with Clint88 that they are excellent polishes and some are £6 at the moment (just ordered 2 more!)

this is really chic. It's slightly darker than it looks but gorgeous on. A plummy greyish taupe. Love!

A coral shade from Opi on my pale toes - never spent that much on a polish before but it was worth the money as it lasts for ages without chipping. I'm contemplating a green shade next.

I don't wear polish on my hands, it just looks odd on me.

A rose gold shade from MAC - think it is Soirée. So pretty - will look good with jeans and t-shirt today and then a slinky black dress for dinner tonight. Love it.
