Anyone want to use up half finished products in a virtuous and smug manner

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2014 16:36

I have waaaaay too much beauty/cosmetics. I have boxes full of new stuff and haven't used up the old stuff first. As a result, I have lots of half used lovely cosmetics and face/body products lying around. I also have tons of samples and GWP - all cluttering up the place. Since I am not going on holiday any time soon (damn you children) there is no point in keeping them for putting in my weekend bag (sob! those were the days) .

So I am on a mission to use them all up. Upside - saves money in the short term. Use lots of nice stuff on a more regular basis. Will force me to actually wash my face/put cream on, rather than rinsing face with water in the shower and whacking some hand cream on my scaly bits once a week.

Anyone else in?

So far, I have:

  • cut the top off my smashbox primer and using the dredges. I have got an extra fortnight out of it so far. I use a bulldog clip to close it over afterwards. I will use the 3 tubes of clarins beauty flash balm as primer afterwards. I have no idea why I have so many!
  • refilled up my spray toner bottle with a freebie smaple bottle of Avene stuff. Not as nice as my normal one but totally fine for the short term.
  • fished out 3 tubes of hand cream and put one in the kitchen, one in the utility, one in my office drawer. Need to find another one for my bedside table - I have about a million tubes of hand cream and never put it on so hopefully this will help.
  • started using a bottle of conditioner i don't like to shave legs.

remembered another one. I have twon packets of that Footner stuff which I bought when on maternity leave in the hope that buying it alone would give me nice feet. it seems that leaving it in the box doesn't actually do anything for hobbit feet so I will use one over the weekend. They are quite good and I have a wedding in 4 weeks so should get the feet in decent nick ahead of that.

I've been doing this for years and generally stick to it. There may be te odd offer that is too good to walk away from, but most of the time I only buy as I'm about to run out of something.

libertychick · 10/04/2014 17:17

Great idea FreeButtonBee

I banning myself from buying any more foundation/BB creams/CC creams till I have used up the current lot
Ditto with body moisturiser - I have a LOT of it.
Have to start using eyecream - I have three of them (they cost about £60 combined Blush
And nail varnish - I have a lot of nail varnish - and yet I go and pay people to put other nail varnish on Blush Blush - I will paint my own nails (but first this weekend I must get the current set of gel nails removed and resist the temptation to get them done again while I am in the salon Grin

I keep buying hair products, and hot cloth cleansers, and face masks...Must use some up, to get some room back, and so I actually know what I've got. Also, I have LOTS of lipsticks!

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2014 17:33

That's where I want to get to Polly I can't justify buying anything at the moment as I have so much stuff at home but I don't use the stuff at home!

It also means that I can in good conscience bin/gift stuff I don't like the smell of or doesn't suit me (partic gifts) or is actually no longer any good.

I too have about three millions tubes of body lotion. I do use them but not consistently so I have about 5 open at any one time.

Oooh I will join in too! I bet if I didn't buy anything for a year I wouldn't run out.I half use stuff and then spot something else
Don't even ask about nail polish and lipsticks.I think they're an addiction.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 10/04/2014 18:07

Ooh I'm in, it's mostly body lotions and butters ?ith me too. Shall I do an inventory? I've thrown out/given away all the ones I don't like but still...

emmelinelucas · 10/04/2014 18:55

This is inspiring ! I have sorted my cabinet out, and a box of things - there are lots of cleansers and body lotions I havent even opened yet. Christmas presents mostly.
I have Elemis bubble bath stuff that I cant use, though as we only have a shower.
Dont know what to do with it.

Bodicea · 10/04/2014 20:12

I will def join in - esp with the hand cream thing - have millions of the things - think I kept getting free in magazines.

Ruprekt · 10/04/2014 20:14

I am in!

No more stuff. Smile

aylesburyduck · 10/04/2014 20:23

God yes! I'm overrun with stuff. I am determined not to buy anything else unless I've run out and I've checked every cupboard to make sure I have really run out Grin

chardom · 10/04/2014 20:28

I'm in too! Have far too much body butter/handcream/make up half used and discarded, put away safely!

Meglet · 10/04/2014 20:32

I'm in. With luck were moving in a few weeks so I'm not taking half used bottles with me. My dressing table is a tip Blush.

I've already started using a nice conditioner (that didn't work for me) on the DC's regular friday night nit comb.

tigerdriverII · 10/04/2014 20:32

Ooh this is inspiring. Just what I needed to get me off my backside, I've been fiddling around with my ipad for about three hours solid, very relaxing but I need to move before I become part of the sofa. So off to the bathroom to sort out some stuff, see what I can salvage and start using. I do have to confess to a stockpile of Vichy deodorant though: I'm not waiting for that to run out before I replace it - it's like gold dust at the moment.

Eliza22 · 10/04/2014 20:35

Oh thank God, it's not just me!

It's my one and only indulgence and I have no idea where I get it from. My sister has a many old makeup bag full of cracked eye shadow powder and dried up mascara a. Blush is anathema to her! I'm a hoarder and not proud of it. I recently gave away a big bag of stuff to my nieces who thought I was potty to have barely used some of it. Is it insecurity? Narcissism? Certainly, madness!

I will try stares guiltily at Bobbi Brown blush in Slopes purchased yesterday

Eliza22 · 10/04/2014 20:36

"Manky old make up bag" Grin

Pollywallywinkles · 10/04/2014 20:40

Once you get started you will hopefully find it quite satisfying and enjoy the purchases you do make.

alemci · 10/04/2014 20:42

I try to do this as much as possible. I have loads too.

HexBramble · 10/04/2014 20:47

I have enough brown eye pencils to open my own shop.

Seems as if I just buy smother when the nib runs flat. Smile

I'm going to buy a sharpener this weekend.

HexBramble · 10/04/2014 20:50

smother??

another

tigerdriverII · 10/04/2014 21:16

Ok - any ideas why I've got seven tubes of Secret Agent? And two bottles of nail varnish remover (I don't wear nail varnish!). And as for the four bottles of sun'n'swim shampoo..... Those three for two offers have a lot to answer for.

I did find a tiny old bottle of Organza, and had forgotten how delicious it smells. Result!

Very cathartic. Make up box is tomorrow's job....

alemci · 10/04/2014 21:24

what is secret agent?

is it any good.

my vice is lots of little sizes from clarins and clinique bonus gifts.

am working my way through them.

namechangenumber5 · 10/04/2014 21:24

I've been doing this for over a year. I'm finally running it of hand cream and foundation and am so excited to be able to get new ones!
