Anyone want to use up half finished products in a virtuous and smug manner

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2014 16:36

I have waaaaay too much beauty/cosmetics. I have boxes full of new stuff and haven't used up the old stuff first. As a result, I have lots of half used lovely cosmetics and face/body products lying around. I also have tons of samples and GWP - all cluttering up the place. Since I am not going on holiday any time soon (damn you children) there is no point in keeping them for putting in my weekend bag (sob! those were the days) .

So I am on a mission to use them all up. Upside - saves money in the short term. Use lots of nice stuff on a more regular basis. Will force me to actually wash my face/put cream on, rather than rinsing face with water in the shower and whacking some hand cream on my scaly bits once a week.

Anyone else in?

So far, I have:

  • cut the top off my smashbox primer and using the dredges. I have got an extra fortnight out of it so far. I use a bulldog clip to close it over afterwards. I will use the 3 tubes of clarins beauty flash balm as primer afterwards. I have no idea why I have so many!
  • refilled up my spray toner bottle with a freebie smaple bottle of Avene stuff. Not as nice as my normal one but totally fine for the short term.
  • fished out 3 tubes of hand cream and put one in the kitchen, one in the utility, one in my office drawer. Need to find another one for my bedside table - I have about a million tubes of hand cream and never put it on so hopefully this will help.
  • started using a bottle of conditioner i don't like to shave legs.

My using up weakness is nail varnish. I can't bear to chuck the last bits away so I accumulate gloopy pots of the stuff.

SoldeInvierno · 10/04/2014 21:58

I use bubble bath as shower gel to use them up. I find that if I use them with a wash cloth, they work just the same. I also use gel in the bath occasionally. I think it is just a marketing plot to make us buy two products

tigerdriverII · 10/04/2014 22:01

Secret agent's a finishing Creme for frizzy hair. It is good but you don't need much of it, so the seven tubes should last me well into 2016.....

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/04/2014 22:05

I have a perfume DS bought me which I really don't like and it is a massive bottle. I have been using it as a room spray (he does not know as he no longer lives at home!).

I have cut the end of my primer to get the last bits out it.

I have sorted out the unopened stuff and some is going to the bottle stall at the summer church fete.

I am working my way through the six bottles of shampoo and conditioiner I bought when they were half price. I am bored with them thoug!

alemci · 10/04/2014 22:12

yes I think we buy new products as the next holy grail that will change our lives etc.

I buy them to cheer me up, cheaper than clothes.

I like the monthly beauty boxes.

used to replace alot of stuff because dds used to steal it/borrow but are not at home now.

I

Hooray fellow user-uppers. I haven't managed to make a dent in the stash tonight. Okay, maybe I will dig some hand cream out before bed just to get going

I agree that there is a sense of achievement in actually using something up - i just need to find the same thrill from finishing something as from buying something.

Good luck.

Ps I haven't even though about the nail varnish stash. ..

Okay, so you didnt mean use all the body butter up AT ONCE?

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2014 22:23

Bodicea · 10/04/2014 22:30

The majority if my eye creams are samples or from a set. I always ask for an eye cream sample at the counter as it is the most high value sample. Have you seen how much they charge for a little tiny pot?

Ememem84 · 10/04/2014 22:44

I am in.

Thanks to boots special offers body shop special offers and lovely kind people gifting me lovely things, I have:

6 pink grapefruit body butters;
7 sets of shampoo/conditioner;
4 packs of make up wipes;
3 kohl pencils;
4 mascara's (2x black 1 brown 1blue!!?)
3 day moisturisers
1 night moisturiser
6 toothpastes
3 new eye shadows
7 deodorants.
And a million shower gels.

I think I'm set for a while

Meglet · 10/04/2014 23:16

I need to come to terms with the fact that Bio Oil really works for my skin and stop scrimping on cheaper moisturisers that I use a couple of times and decide are crap. I'm going to use my surplus body and hand creams on my feet.

If I'm feeling especially nice I'll let 5yo DD use up a nail varnish Hmm.

Aquelven · 10/04/2014 23:31

Count me in. I have far too much stuff lurking in cupboards & still buy more Blush
I've hit on the ruse of putting bottles of pump action shower gel to get used up by the family as hand soap, even in the kitchen.

Playboxpony · 11/04/2014 07:42

I'm in...!!! Fed up and (slightly disgusted) at all my duplicate, half finished bottles of hand cream, primer, body lotion, foundation etc. Have promised myself not to be any more toiletries or cosmetics until I have used up the current ones. Be strong everyone Smile

Mrs4561 · 11/04/2014 08:29

I so need this! My downfall is make up, recently had a clear out and threw out 9 bottles of foundation ranging from nearly new to half full. The ones I threw out are ones that are the wrong colour that I know I won't use. So I'm left with 6 different bottles, numerous small sample bottles that I WILL USE BEFORE BUYING ANYMORE! that goes for the 4 bottles of primer I have too I realised it was getting a bit out of hand when I bought a new foundation after reading some really good reviews, got home and realised I already had a half empty bottle of exactly the same foundation...

OneLittleLady · 11/04/2014 08:44

Don't really have much that's half used but I have a lot of unopened shower gels, body butters/lotions/scrubs, face creams/exfoliators/eye creams/hot cloth cleansers plus some make up items that have never been used. Most have been bought for me as presents so I must start using them. A lot of them are not cheap things either, stuff like Elemis which my Dp's Mum always buys me for Christmas Blush

FreeButtonBee · 11/04/2014 08:49

I might actually have to buy some moisturiser soon . But I've got to look through all my samples first and see if there are any lurking in the underground.

This morning I used some body scrub on my scaly arms and moisturised my arms and legs and bum before getting dressed. Arms feel lovely. Why don't I do this more often?!?

Bodicea I agree re eye cream. I have never really bothered before but got a clinique sample size and actually have been quite good at slapping it on at night recently. I have also realised I don't like pump action face products. I have no idea why but I use tubs of cream or tubes of stuff much better. The pump ones always get left by the wayside. Weird.

One pot of ancient nail varnish binned.

A gloopy base coat being reused as a toe polish base coat.

body oil spray that turned out to be a PITA to use is almost gone.

RhondaJean · 15/04/2014 20:45

I have a guilty confession.

I finished the little bottle of sanctuary ultimate cleansing oil I got in my Xmas gift set but I liked it so much I went and bought the full size bottle, although I have several other cleansers Blush

In my defence, I'm using the cleansing washes in the morning and the oil at night to take off makeup, is that ok?

FreeButtonBee · 15/04/2014 20:56

The old conditioner is clogging up my pores so will bin it. Not even good enough for leg shaving.

I have no reserves of moisturiser so can legitimately buy some

Found 3 scummy looking half bottles of shower gel so will try them out and bin if horrible.

On a roll!

OP posts:
FreeButtonBee · 15/04/2014 20:57

RJ: I reckon that's acceptable. Stuff you really like and will use is fine but you need to use the old stuff too

OP posts:
Meglet · 15/04/2014 20:57

rhonda as long as you are slowly chipping away at the cleansers you don't really like then I think it's allowed.

I've also got a sickly body spray I'm determined to use up. I've been using it on my toes before a gym classes to cool them down before I get into my trainers. Means I don't have to smell the stuff.

RhondaJean · 15/04/2014 21:08

I am using up the old stuff, it's amazing how many little sample bottles of things I have. I'm down to my second last body scrub and there are only two full size bottles of shower gel left. I have several cream or wash cleansers but they seem to dry my skin a bit while the oil is doing wonders for it, however if I use the oil in the morning my skin is shiny so this is working for me.

I'm being religious about cleanse tone moisturise twice a day!

MargotThreadbetter · 15/04/2014 22:28

I'm in too!

My bathroom cupboard contains:
9 different body moisturisers/butters
2 body scrubs
5 shampoos
5 conditioners
3 shower gels

God this is just scratching the surface Blush

I've also got loads and loads of serums, moisturisers, cleansers, exfoliators...
And make-up, well, waaay too much.

Agree with pp though, it's a cheap(er) buzz than clothes and I'm always after the holy grail product!

However. No more until I'm down to 1 of each.

CardiCorgi · 16/04/2014 12:31

Me too. I started doing this over a year ago when I realised that I had saved some things "for best" for so long that they had gone off.

Hand cream is now in my desk drawer so that I will actually use it and mini gwp items are in my sports bag ready for when I get off my behind and do something.
