Help me choose a Lindy Bop dress for February wedding

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 06:41

Dh is best man at a wedding in February. :)

I want a brilliant dress as the last wedding I went to with this group of friends was mine - 7 years ago and pre dc!

I think I'd like something 1950s style with a full skirt. I've narrowed it down to

Audrey Hepburn style

And a similar prom dress

My budget isn't massive as I will also have to buy shoes and wrap/ jacket/ extra layer etc.

What do you think? Confused

I'm 5 foot 2, size 10, with smallish boobs and a short pixie crop hair.

Does it have to be Lindy Bop? I've had a dress from there before, and returned it as the quality was naff and it looked cheap.

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 06:49

Um no suppose not - they suited my budget well.

I would definitely look other places, where is good for a limited budget? Confused

eBay will be your friend in this situation! Grin Tiger Millie and Sirens and Starlets on eBay sell lovely retro-style dresses and always seem to have a sale on.

It's worth having a look for a vintage or reproduction vintage item if you really like the fifties style - Etsy.com have some stunning dresses that you might like.

Voodoo Vixen do some stunning, high quality retro-style dresses. Lots of online retailers sell them for around £30-40. I'm desperately coveting the peacock wiggle dress...

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 07:22

What are those eBay places like for returns?

I'm quite possibly between sizes, an being short means sometimes a beautiful dress just looks wrong.

I've bought off Lindy Bop and think they are great. Excellent customer service, great range and great dresses. http://www.lindybop.co.uk/lindy-bop-lucille-classy-1950s-vintage-style-pleated-rock-n-roll-party-dress-in-green-black-and-rust-2873-p.asp I love this one.

KosherBacon · 12/12/2013 07:25

Lets try again I like this one

TheFillyjonk · 12/12/2013 07:32

I think they're okay for returns, although they may have a shorter window to do it in.

Yeah, I'm a shortarse too. I find that anything below the knee drowns me, which is a shame as that's how these retro dresses are cut. I've had a few taken up by a friend, but it's a pain.

Maybe I've been unfair on lindyBop and you could give them a try?

KosherBacon · 12/12/2013 07:34

To be fair, I've missed the returns cut off but emailed them and they were fine and agreed it was ok to do the return.

EugenesAxe · 12/12/2013 07:38

There's a shop near Aldgate - I think - in London called Fairy Gothmother that does lots of 50s dresses for a reasonable price. The petticoats might be on top though; be aware that they are really full.

They have a website - you could try to source a cheaper petticoat if necessary I suppose.

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 08:27

kosher - that's lovely! :) Shame they don't do it in more colours.

eugene - had a quick peek and there are some lovely dresses but I'm not grabbed by any of them iykwim. :)

Think I'll have to get my tape measure out to see what size I am. Confused

I had a Lindybop dress as a bridesmaid dress for my sisters wedding! It was the Grace one (I think it was called grace, with the bow on the hip) and it was good quality and very flattering. Got it in red which was a deep-ish red, so not really bright. I had to send one back for a smaller size and their customer service was good too. I teamed it with a black petticoat from Hell Bunny.

There are a few shops near me who stock them so may be worth looking to see if there's anywhere you can try one on first?

Pinupgirl · 12/12/2013 17:11

I find Lady vintage and Collectif are better quality than Lindybop-I think Lady V still have some stuff in the sale too.

BunnyLebowski · 12/12/2013 17:13

Don't buy from Lindy Bop for a wedding!

Their dresses are appalling quality. They're cheap for a reason OP!

ImAnElfJeSuisUneElf · 12/12/2013 17:20

I'm wearing the Lindy bop Audrey tomorrow for Christmas do. It's lovely. Very simple.

It was £22 off eBay (new) plus £8 for the petticoat and looks fantastic. Smile

KipT77 · 12/12/2013 17:27

Have you looked at Vivienne of Holloway? I love their stuff and they do lots of different designs. The swishiest swishy skirts. I once won a box of fruit pastilles at a wedding after the band voted me best swishy skirt or something similar when I was wearing one (Or perhaps that was a dream).

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 17:28

bunny that's what I'm worried about but equally my budget isn't huge as we'll have to kit out me, dh, ds and dd. and get a present, pay for drinks and travel etc etc. Confused

iamanelf do you think it looks like cheap quality iyswim? I rally like the style and am tempted to buy and see what it looks like.

Eliza J at House of Fraser dress. Eliza J do some lovely vintage-inspired dresses and they're in the sale at the moment.

More Eliza J

ImAnElfJeSuisUneElf · 12/12/2013 19:26

I don't think so, but mine is a burnt orange colour. I think in a dark colour it may look shiny, iyswim?

Suddengeekgirl · 12/12/2013 19:43

Thanks iamanelf :) Hmmmm
Might check out the returns policy and then order one to try. It's a while till the wedding so I do have some time to look around at least.

issynoho I had a look but they weren't quite what I fancied and as they're over budget I would really have to love the dress to think about it. Thanks for the suggestion though! :)

I've got that exact same Lindy dress Sudden, it is actually ok. Not the worlds best quality (cotton so nothing fancy) but can be dressed up.

I wore it to a wedding and teamed it with a white hell bunny underskirt and a pair of multi coloured Ruby shoo err shoes. I'm 5ft 5 and it came to below the knee. I got a size 12 as I am a 10/12 but it was a bit on the big side round the bust (am a 32D).

MrsLettuce · 12/12/2013 21:00

Have you tried Voodoo Vixen? I find the quality if very good for the price. Were summer dresses I had though so can't comment on the winter stuff.

What's your budget including acessories? Do you have existing shoes/bag/cover up/jewelery you want to be able to use?
