Anyone else love brown clothes but can't find them anywhere?

I have auburn hair, fair skin and freckles. Much as I think black looks great on other people it doesn't really suit me. I look ten times better in brown and a few years back I could find cords, cashmere jumpers and cardigans etc quite easily.

This year - and last year - there seems to be none of it around at all Sad Anyone else feel the same and maybe has had more luck than me?

Go to Antwerp, Flemish women live for brown.

highlandcoo · 28/11/2013 18:35

Really, Santiago? How do you know such an interesting fact? Would Bruges work - I've always wanted to go there.

I spent 8 years living in Belgium knowing that brown clothes made me look like a middle-aged lesbian who eschews fashion! Grin

SantiagoToots · 28/11/2013 18:40

The shopping isn't that hot in Brugge, however it's only 30 mins or so on the train to Gent which has good shopping.

Laska42 · 28/11/2013 18:41

Nooooo! we had brown school uniform! 40 years later you still dont see me in it .ever. sorry.

Listentomanyspeaktoafew · 28/11/2013 18:42

Ditto to the quest for brown. Someone on MN a while back put a link up to preview of Boden spring 2014 collection- there were a few brown items in there. I also went into M&Co today and saw quite a lot of brown- straight leg cords, etc. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but they seemed ok for basic stuff.

TheRaniOfYawn · 28/11/2013 18:43

There is a thread for people with Autumn colouring which has lots of links to brown stuff.

Leviticus · 28/11/2013 18:44

I saw some Aquascutem skinny brown cords in TK Maxx recently for under £30. They would have been lovely if they weren't brown Wink.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 28/11/2013 18:45

I really wNt a pair of brown trousers. Can't find any anywhere.

BunnyLebowski · 28/11/2013 18:46

I can't imagine anyone looking good in brown tbh.

Top to toe brown would have an overall Mr Hanky look.

Someone on here last week was looking for a brown puffer coat Shock . Why??!

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 28/11/2013 18:49

You're probably right. I rather like brown but look ridiculous in it.

But as it is a relatively unpopular colour you need to look in places where unpopular stuff goes to wait for the discerning shopper; The Outnet and TK Maxx should probably be on your list.

And Toast usually has a lot of brown - if you really are discerning.....

FoxyHarlow123 · 28/11/2013 19:04

Shopstyle is your friend.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 28/11/2013 19:36

They're all in my wardrobe. I can't help buying them despite the fact brown makes me look dead

highlandcoo · 28/11/2013 20:38

OK so not everyone is convinced that brown is beautiful Grin

Hadn't heard of Mr Hanky till I googled him but clinging to the hope that I do not look like a long brown jobby in my current outfit and particularly not in my brown puffer coat (of which I am extremely fond).

Thanks for other ideas about where to look. Off to investigate now and hoping to become even browner asap

VarsityQueen · 28/11/2013 22:00

And try searching for Ebony on www.esprit.co.uk

VworpVworp · 28/11/2013 23:56

I'm a soft autumn, and I have quite a bit of brown in my wardrobe Smile
And middle-aged lesbian that eschews fashion is pretty much my look! Grin

Gap can be good, Boden, White Company, John Lewis own label. I find that Autumn is the best time to shop, as that's when the autumnal colours are in shops. East sometimes has those colours, Kew, white stuff, and H&M.

My favourite brown cords were actually M&S Blush but I have several pairs from gap too, and lovely soft brown cardis and merino sweater from there.

With auburn hair, you probably look stunning in leafy, earthy greens too, and deep auberginey purples. I have some gorgeous green/purple stuff from Seasalt and White stuff, great colours, have to layer though, as both companies' clothes are quite thin IYSWIM.

Grin Grin at Mr Hanky!

fossil971 · 29/11/2013 00:06

It suits me - everyone else can leave it on the shelves if they want.

There is a definite lack this season with the swing to navy. Can you wear burgundy, there's a lot of that around at the moment?

fossil971 · 29/11/2013 00:10

It drives me nuts when you want to buy something (outdoors and sports clothes are awful for this) and the choice of colours is black, bright pink, bright purple and aqua blue - all of which look dreadful on Autumns.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/11/2013 00:16

I'm looking for a chocolate brown jumper (preferably chenille) but no luck.
I bought a Uniqlo cable knit but it's beige.

M&S cord leggings in brown (lovely)

And I've just ordered my Mr Hanky coat from QVC Blush (for shame) to tone with my brown boots.

I'm going to look like a Turd on Legs aren't I?

Makes note to avoid Antwerpt

I've got a brown Kipling bag too.......

BiscuitMillionaire · 29/11/2013 00:24

I was looking at a really nice brown soft wool jumper in a second-hand stall, thought I would check the label, and it was 100% cashmere. For 10 quid Grin I bought it!

I agree, though. I was thinking that a really nice look for a woman of a certain age is neutral biscuity colours and browns. Black can look really cheap. All my old clothes are blue or purple, I think I need more brown! But as you say, not easy to find.
