£250 to spend on a bag... What would you buy?

I need a new main handbag as my old faithful lovely brown leather one I use for work has started to break after almost 10 years.

My budget is £250ish but I can't seem to find anything between Topshop and Mulberry that I like.

Do your worst, bag ladies.

Another vote for Russell and Bromley here. And Hindmarch if you can get one in the sales.

Modalu and Kors both have far too much shiny gold hardware for my personal taste.

polyhymnia · 27/11/2013 17:43

Yes that bag perfectly makes my point about Kors. I find that metalware horrendous and cheap looking. But accept that sort of thing is a matter of personal taste.

faustina · 27/11/2013 19:42

Yes to Mimi Berry, and Coach - also take a look at Ally Capellino. Maybe wait a few more weeks now - the sales will be here soon!

MarshaBrady · 27/11/2013 20:02

hmm yes I'm sure I've seen not so blingy hardware Kors ones somewhere. Maybe on NaP or outnet.

Peony & Moore is your friend, bought a few in last few years, very good leather and fab customer service.. how about this one?

georgia bag

sporktacular · 27/11/2013 21:34

£250 for a handbag? Sorry but I'd want this for that www.gooutdoors.co.uk/tfx-annapurna-nd65-80-p151723

And I could get a spare one with the change Shock

bunnymother · 27/11/2013 21:39

That looks practical. But I think you are confused, this is Style & Beauty, not The Great Outdoors.

nowaistatall · 27/11/2013 21:48

P & M for me too - good quality leather - no bling - just nice bags like this one that I have and love -www.peonyandmoore.com/product_info.php?cPath=0_12&products_id=142

Karbea · 27/11/2013 21:52

There's a Coach and M.Kors in bicester, you can call and reserve things if they have themin stock, otherwise just going there you are likely to find something nice :)

DontmindifIdo · 27/11/2013 21:57

When I tried to get advice on a bag, I was told to buy a bench. It's one of those things on here, you are allowed to spend a lot of money on a house. If you chose to smoke, that's your right, if you want to sink a bottle of wine or two over every weekend, that's not wasteful, but spend money on a bag, and you are a wastral.

No one ever appears on a smoking thread and tells someone to stop smoking and spend the spare £100 + they'll save a month on some charity thing. (You are spending less than the cost of one packet of fags per week for a year - a lot of people smoke more than that but they aren't considered immoral for wanting to spend that money on themselves when they could give it to charity). At worse, smokers are told to quit and spend it on their DCs, but for some reason only money put aside for a handbag is considered to be a straight choice between a thing for yourself or money for charity.

Anyway, I like Peony and Moore Lucia

bunnymother · 27/11/2013 21:59

What always strikes me with the bench and charity comments is that they are just not relevant to the thread.

AmberNectarine · 27/11/2013 22:02

Did you get a bag in the end dontmind? Or was the lure of that bench just too much?

DontmindifIdo · 27/11/2013 22:20

I did get a bag! We are bench free here, and I do think of the person who left me the money when I use the bag, she would have approved.

DontmindifIdo · 27/11/2013 22:23

(However, I have now had dc2 so am normally found carrying around a changing bag with my stuff shoved in it as I'm not really a 2 bag kind of woman)

sporktacular · 27/11/2013 22:31

Sorry I didn't mean mine to be a nasty comment in any way, really just can't imagine how a handbag could be £250 worth of good quality or useful or beautiful.

Was trying to convey this thought with a bit of humour, since at least my choice of bag covers "useful".

Obviously failed. Obviously not as stylish or beautiful as you all. Never mind.

P.S. I don't even have kids so I can spend my money on all the wine, bags, cigarettes, cat toys and cake that I like (and I do!).

P.P.S. I didn't mention benches or charities and can only assume that I've maybe stirred feelings from some previous thread that I've never read or contributed to?

Matsikula · 27/11/2013 22:33

I'm considering spending a similar sum on a bag soon, and I reckon Jaeger, Hobbs, Mimi Berry and Russell and Bromley are all good suggestions. J Crew and Coach possibly also too, though I suspect you pay a chunky premium for them in the UK. I'll be waiting for the sales though.

Dontmindifido, glad you didn't get a bench - there are far too many of them in most parks anyway.

justasecond · 27/11/2013 22:34

The bag haters are nothing if not predictable. What I don't understand is why they are on these threads if they have no interest in bags?? Anyway, I am also after a bag in this price range. I am drawn towards a MbMJ for the great quality leather but not so sure about the gold hardware. Also like Coach and the Longchamp le pliage leather. I went to the Coach store in Bicester a couple of months ago but they didn't have any of the newer nicer style ranges like the Legacy or Madison. I am waiting for sales now anyway.

polyhymnia · 27/11/2013 22:40

Visited the Kors shop in Regent St recently. Had never really looked properly but had assumed they were classy. was horrified at the general level of blinginess. The only one I thought at all OK was the Jet Set and, even then, I'd want to take the vulgar MK tag off it at once .

Hate that sort of thing and am always amazed people are happy to spend lots of money to go around with a bag with, say, a big shiny plate with a Mulberry tree pic on it!

MarshaBrady · 27/11/2013 22:43

Yes think it was the jet set one. Agree on annoying label and too obvious branding and not keen on the Mulberry tree either.

smellylittleorange · 27/11/2013 22:51

Am considering the Le Pliage Cuir in red ..Longchamp also have other bags worth a look

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 27/11/2013 22:52

I bought the Bristol Turnlock Shopper from R&B a few weeks ago...and I love, love, love it!

BellaVita · 27/11/2013 23:03

I have recently bought a Michael Kors one - £285.

Workberk · 27/11/2013 23:09

Ooh I'd forgotten about Mimi Berry - a friend has one of those and it's lovely.

Think I will wait for the sales.

(I do quite want a bench thinking about it. Not a bleeding rucksack though)
