Outfit for an October wedding - truly no idea where to start!

I've just read a few winter wedding threads and I've realised that I should seriously get moving on finding myself an outfit for a wedding mid October. I admit I'm fashion clueless, I buy anything I like that's cheap/practical/comfy/second hand and have no particular style, just never really had the confidence or money to get into fashion Grin

I've been very impressed with the collective MN style knowledge and would really appreciate some help putting together an outfit or I'll just end up putting it off til the last minute and panic buying something I don't like, like usual

I'm about a size 14, fairly tall and definitely hourglass, also I was told I'm "bright autumn" when someone did my colours. The wedding is relaxed style, autumn colours.

Thanks in advance Smile

Also if I go with all black accessories I'd not have to match to the same colour red as the dress. Do like TSS's scarf though... What about a belt? A thin or thick one? Soft leather or buckle style? Cut out or solid? I never knew there were so many types of belt!!

Black shoes and bag would be fine, the scarf has blue and black in it so "ties" the outfit together.

Can also be worn afterwards with black dress, black trousers/top or a black coat.

You can pick up black patent skinny belts from places like Primarni for small £'s OP.

Thanks TSS Grin I AM very tempted by the scarf... You think skinny belt then? What about the shoes? I even thought about knee high boots but I reckon I'd have to have a heel whatever I wear...

Update- the fit and flare red wrap dress doesn't fit. The wrap part is sitting on my ribs not my waist as I'm tall. Back yo the drawing board Hmm

Ok. Back again. After my 2 disappointments and a couple of failed eBay endeavours I've been looking again and having trawled many online sites have discovered that lace is in! I really like [http://www.next.co.uk/g4914s2 this] and [http://www.next.co.uk/x52106s1 this] what do you think? Smile

Hiya there Tinwe!

I am just finding this thread and I am watching with avid interest. The wedding I'm going to is end Oct but need to get sorted asap. I too love lace and am 5'11 and a half, 32DD and a size 12 on average. Hourglass I think or else poss bit heavier on the hips. Love all the blues, purples, deep reds too but have never had my colours done. Pretty sure there's a MN thread for that I haven't found yet! :-)

I also prefer midi dresses so if you find a nice midi dress in lace, don't for gods sake put it on here for everyone to buy- PM me or something ;-) Only (half) joking. I love the next plum one but a bit short? And cold. I'd love a long / 3/4 sleeved midi lace dress. Would be perfect!

Hi Protective - good luck with your search! I've just bought my "or this" red lace dress from Next. It was very flattering and I took a size 12 too to my surprise (possibly because of the cut). I would have preferred a v neck for my boobs but it's not bad at all. They do the dress in tall too although I got the regular as that's all they had in store. I love the clinger styles like the plum dress but just didn't feel confident wearing one for a wedding. Having said that I'm still looking out in case I find a "better one" or cheaper one as I've been looking so long now it's hard to stop! Grin

Thanks for posting this!! I've been fretting about an autumn wedding coming up (I'm tall but hourglass so no shift dresses for me! Confused

Oh the red one. Are you wearing it with black shoes like the woman in the pic?

Was planning to but with black tights too BUT I've found another dress too now! Can't find a pic of it online though... Grin

It's a black prom dress, boat neck (but transparent from chest up over shoulders), knee length, "jacquard" (whatever that means) in a black spot patterned translucent material over a pale gold material. Very Audrey Hepburnesk so feels classy. Surprisingly flattering too.

Now I'm torn between fashionable and bright, and classy and flattering! Either way, a fitted waist and flared skirt is DEFINITELY the way forward for me! Smile

Fitted waist and flared skirt you say? V interesting! Never tried that! I tried on some dresses today and what suited me best I think were blue dresses (or navy but navy is more boring) which are midi in length and fitted. I don't have a v large bust and suit the long slimline look. A dress must be midi length on me or I won't buy it due to varicose veins (pregnancy) on backs of legs and upper calves. Also I don't like my knees much. Other than that, I'm quite ok looking. I'd quite like long sleeves too because frankly, what kind of cardigan, wrap or jacket actually looks good with a nice evening dress??? :-) Anybody seen any good dresses like this? :-) Would be much obliged!

Haha Tinwe the coast one is the one I tried on! It's a bit pricey for what it is to be honest and the 12 is a little tight around the hips. There is a little zip at the split, which I am unsure about (fussy) but otherwise it is GORGEOUS! If I go for lots of runs in the next month and slim my hips down, it would be absolutely gorgeous :-)

Re: the debs one, would not fit me in size 12 according to measurements. Re: the long sleeved one- too short. Would love one that's slightly longer at the back! Not going to find it though am I?

Protective - will come back later to analyse your posts but have FINALLY managed to find the dress I liked and wanted to paste it before I lose it again! here

It's a great shape fit my hourglass figure and length for my bit so shapely knees but I would've preferred a v neck and maybe a brighter colour. Black is slimming though! What do you think? This or the red lace dress?

The pied a terre dress is my ultimate favourite! If I sell all my other stuff on eBay I could afford it! :-)

Re: the black dress, well it's black so I would def go with the red one.

You know I have a black dress that is quite perfect on me and v classy for this wedding. (Only going to the reception!). The two downsides are

  1. It's black (and black ain't good for weddings, even if you're only going to the reception!)

  1. The only shoes I have to go with it are bejewelled silver sandals so I would look very Christmassy! Either that or like I was on a Caribbean cruise!
