Outfit for an October wedding - truly no idea where to start!

I've just read a few winter wedding threads and I've realised that I should seriously get moving on finding myself an outfit for a wedding mid October. I admit I'm fashion clueless, I buy anything I like that's cheap/practical/comfy/second hand and have no particular style, just never really had the confidence or money to get into fashion Grin

I've been very impressed with the collective MN style knowledge and would really appreciate some help putting together an outfit or I'll just end up putting it off til the last minute and panic buying something I don't like, like usual

I'm about a size 14, fairly tall and definitely hourglass, also I was told I'm "bright autumn" when someone did my colours. The wedding is relaxed style, autumn colours.

Thanks in advance Smile

Nice jacket Remus but I'm not sure I would wear it again and a scarf/wrap would be cheaper Grin

coast 20% discount at the moment, 48 hours only though! No code, through website

Tinwe · 11/09/2013 23:29

Damn! Just spotted your post Ducky Hmm I've ordered this dress now though anyway, so your discount would just have tempted me to buy even more! This is very similar to the blue dress upthread which I loved but couldn't get in my size. Should receive it any day so I'll be back asking for accessory advice if it's ok. I'm also bidding on a coast dress on eBay which is quite different in style and colour to the dresses on here but won't know if I've got it for a day or two and suspect I'll be outbid as I'm too unsure of my size/the fit to spend much on a dress I can't return.

That's a lovely dress! Debenhams have 20% off new stock at the moment, just to tempt you further...!

Tinwe · 12/09/2013 21:40

It's arrived but no good :( It's very stretchy material and although it fits loosely at the front (over my tummy) it clings very unflatteringly on my hips and bum. I think it's the style and so meant to fit like that but it just doesn't suit me. I thought it would skim/drape loosely but the stretch of the material shows it's meant to be slinky. I've lost my confidence a bit now. Wondering if I should go more for an a line style instead

planet purple ruffle any good?

VeeAndTea · 13/09/2013 10:13

this is lovely

and this

this dress could look amazing. I think people attending weddings should look polished and too many of those other dresses just look like work dresses that are insufficiently dressy and definitely not polished.

LibraryBook · 13/09/2013 10:32

Ah on further reading, perhaps you need a prom style dress to hide your tummy? There's a lovely black lace one from M&Co. Although it's black, it doesn't look funereal because of the lining. I think it's gorgeous.

Sorry posted too soon, I got this dress for a wedding tomorrow, I'm a size 18 and 38ff and dp said it makes me look thin, maybe totally not what you're looking for at all

Tinwe · 13/09/2013 13:31

Library - I agree about looking polished and enjoy the chance to dress up a bit but also I think the wedding is going to be a bit earthy/alternative so don't want to look overdressed Confused

I was wondering about a fuller skirt like a prom dress or skater dress myself...

Having now looked at loads of dresses Grin I've decided i would ideally like the following based on my figure and current confidence (I've lost weight lately and I'm conscious of my belly/hips although I've been informed they're not that bad!)

Midi or longer
V neck, cross over or Bardot top
Not stretchy/clingy material around tummy/hips (although fitted is ok). I think A-line style may be best
Autumny colour- I like red and purple best but black is ok
Don't mind plain OR a bit of pattern (like a blurry floral etc) as long as it's subtle pattern (ie Aztec would be too much)
I'd prefer not full sleeve or short sleeve as I think they'd make me look broad across my shoulders
Under £80

Ps thanks v much for all your patience with this Smile

Ducky - good idea as that last dress is very similar to the one I tried. Same material so I think it'd cling again though

What do you think of this?

ILoveWoollyStuff · 13/09/2013 19:43

I'm no expert but I think that dress is lovely. I'm a similar shape to you, though larger, and I have a definite tummy and I'd wear it. (Not sure that's helpful.)

I recently wore a 50's style swing dress from lady vintage to a wedding after they were recommended on here and I had so many wonderful comments. I dressed it with an underskirt from eBay and since the style is for a higher waist, I didn't worry about 'wobbly bits' as they were all well concealed by generous skirt. I also didn't go for the whole 'look' as that would have not been right for the wedding.

Tinwe · 13/09/2013 22:02

Thanks Ilove! I bet you looked fab Smile I think I've gone a bit mad cos I've just bought this!! Grin

I admit I was getting a bit fed up of looking and DH said he liked it possibly just to shut me up from showing him dress after dressGrin so I went for it.

I've since spotted it's lightweight cotton. A mistake for October?

Oh, just seen you've bought something!

Tinwe · 14/09/2013 00:30

What do you think of my link Waffly? I really like your dress too, might be stretchy/clingy over my hips and bum again though?

Sorry for delay! Yes, it's lovely. Smile

TSSDNCOP · 15/09/2013 12:20

Wrap and bag to accessorise the Coast dress.

Tinwe · 15/09/2013 13:50

Ooh TSS! Very nice and unusual, adds up a bit though. I was originally thinking of just black accessories so I could use a handbag and shoes from my cupboard. Would these (not patent though) be ok or too boring? I can take criticism! Grin

I hasten to add that my shoes are similar but obviously not junior. They're from a couple of seasons ago though so I can't find a pic online.
