Beyonce's new crop haircut

Have Just seen some pics of beyonce with her new short hair and she looks amazing. The article had a load of befores and afters of others who had gone for crops- Helen Mirren, Sharon Stone, Kate Moss, Carey Mulligan etc and every one of them looked so much better and cooler with short hair, the older women especially. Combine this with being increasingly fed up woth my shoulder length hair in this heat and my 40th birthday fast approaching, and am thinking of dping something radical. Remember Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors? However all these women are beautiful and I am fairly average at best. My hair is naturally mousey so I highlight it, and it's very fine and flyaway. It basically looks a bit Anistony. What i want to avoid is the severe older woman look (think Judy Murray). Appreciate that none of you can advise without seeing me, but what are people's experiences of going for the chop- did you regret it, or feel liberated and refreshed?

You need to be not overweight or it all looks a bit Pat Butcher

I had a crop, urchin cut, whatev you want to call it, around age 40. Was fab. Get up, gob on hand, smooth hair, job done r. Not really about the gobbing!
4 weeks between cuts not 6.

Go for it

Nb grew mine out for a wedding. Now a fiercely angled pob, bra srap front, shaved back. Am.knocking on 50.

AntoinetteCosway · 09/08/2013 07:25

Agree Beyonce looks amazing but I suspect she would look beautiful in a paper bag!

I've never had a crop that short but when I had a chin length bob my flyaway slightly frizzy hair shot straight up in the air and turned into something that can only be described as a triangular afro. Not a good look on me. I'm fed up with long hair and would LIVE to have it short but there's so much of it I just can't find a way to do it well.

AntoinetteCosway · 09/08/2013 07:26

That would be LOVE of course!

JessieMcJessie · 09/08/2013 07:27

Oh God yes, Pat Butcher! A cautionary tale!

pocketandsweet · 09/08/2013 07:38

I think avoiding the Pat Butcher look is more about color and makeup than the length of the hair. I'm not blessed with Beyonce features but I love having a short crop. It is however a higher maintenance option in my case as I have thick hair and so it needs frequent haircuts to keep its shape. As an added bonus having short hair and no real part line has gotten rid of my problem of what to do with the irritating wiry grey hairs that used to be so much more noticeable with long hair.

sophiedaal · 09/08/2013 08:40

Are you near anywhere that sells wigs? I thought I'd look uh-may-zing with long black Nigella hair. Tried on a wig in Selfridges to get an idea of how dark to go, turns out I look more like present day Angelica Huston. Abandoned plan. (Although I looked much better than I'd expected in the short blonde Purdy wig I only tried on to humour the assistant - is surprising how your vision of 'what you look like' blurs what you actually see.)

SundaySimmons · 09/08/2013 08:46

Many years ago I went for a short hair cut. Horror of horrors it looked like June Ackland from THe Bill tv show. I hated it. Dyed it purple to modernise it but it still looked frumpy and horrible on me.

Made all the worse by a colleague who was quite a frump having the same hair cut and it made her look a million times better!

Elliptic5 · 09/08/2013 08:49

I'm not sure about Beyonce - would like to see some better pics. Think Anne Hathaway, Emma Watson and Helen Mirren look fab. I've gone from shoulder length to chin length and would like to try a really short cut, my hair is highlighted blonde, very fine and thin. Also not sure I can cope with cold ears in the winter.

sophiedaal · 09/08/2013 08:59

Although fwiw, and am prepared to be in a minority of 1 here, I thought those pics made Beyonce look about 10 years older. Is a v fine line between gamine and soccer mom.

Ultimate crop for me will always be Gladys Pugh's jet black pixie cut in Hi de Hi.

MorrisZapp · 09/08/2013 09:05

I've had short hair for nearly twenty years now. It suits me. I'm not gamine, never was and never will be. Gammon, aye, maybe. I've got a slightly Britpop type pointy front short bob, cropped up the back.

It just feels horrible when it starts growing down my neck. I only feel clean and fresh with short hair. And my morning blow dry takes three minutes. Haven't seen the Beyonce pics, will have a google.

Supertrooper88 · 09/08/2013 09:11

Am I looking at a different picture to everyone else. It looks really meh to me.

Dont get me wrong - she looks beautiful but she would in a bin liner.

I prefer her longer hair really not taken with the short hair. It suits her but I think she looks better in the pics with her hair long.

Is it just me??

dexter73 · 09/08/2013 09:21

I think Beyonce looks better with long hair too. Love Anne Hathaway with short hair. I think he suggestion of trying on wigs is a good one.

lurkingaround · 09/08/2013 09:21

While I think Beyonce is beautiful and agree, I suspect she would look great in a paper bag, I don't like her new haircut either. Having said that, i am a slow fashion adopter so don't mind me, I could be entirely wrong again. Nah, I don't like it.

lurkingaround · 09/08/2013 09:23

Don't like Anne Hathaway's either. Love Emma Watson's. Like Helen Mirren with it. I think you need very fine features to pull it (crop) off.

forehead · 09/08/2013 09:30

Beyonce is gorgeous, but i don't like her hair.
Long her makes her look beautiful, short her makes her look more 'average'.
On the other hand. Halle Berry looks great with short hair, but decidedly
average with long hair.
I suspect that Beyonce will return to the weaves soon.

cocolepew · 09/08/2013 09:34

I cut my shoulder length dark hair into a crop the other week, I have have it shortb efore though. I bleached it and look pretty good Im 44.

I would advise to keep longer lengths on top with a long fringe to start with.

lurkingaround · 09/08/2013 09:36

Yes, Halle Berry is another who looks fab with short hair. Shows off her beautiful face/everything.

I think Beyonce's smacks of 'new mum no time' and as forehead says, looks decidedly average. Of course average for Beyonce is me in my dreams. It's all relative. She's still beautiful.

JessieMcJessie · 09/08/2013 09:44

June Ackland and Gladys Pugh, some great TV nostalgia there!

I wonder if Beyonce's new do is anything to do with the grabbing hands of her little daughter...still, easy to go for a chop when you have unlimited funds and access to weaves and top stylists.

Wigs are a thought, though I always think that it's the front that's important an no wigs really recreate how my own hair would sit.

I recently found a pic of myself aged about 12 with short hair (I think Diana -inspired). Didn't do much for me then, and DP just laughed.

Agree re Halle Berry. Actually it was Helen Mirren who really planted the thought in my head, she looks 10 years older with longer hair.

GreenSkittles · 09/08/2013 10:32

Users on Jezebel seem to think it's something called a quick weave' and not her natural hair. I do think that if she wanted to give her natural hair a rest she wouldn't bleach it! It could be a lace-front.

But I don't really like it. I've seen her in another short style before, styled like Josephine Baker's hair. That looked nice.

She has been wearing weaves for years hasn't she! Yet with short hair I see no damage at all.

SingingSands · 09/08/2013 18:58

I don't like it, I don't think it suits her. Saw a good photo of her with a graduated chin length bob that did suit her, but the new crop isn't working (for me anyway - apologies Queen Bey!)

sparkle12mar08 · 09/08/2013 21:29

I'm sure it'll look better when it's all silky and shiny and styled by a professional. In those home photo's it looks dry and stringy and ages her by about ten years.

SirChenjin · 09/08/2013 21:33

I don't think it suits her at all - makes her look much older and quite masculine.

biryani · 09/08/2013 21:35

I''ve had crops for 30 years, as my hair is very fine. I think you should go for it: put somehhighlights in for extra volume maybe. I think short wigs look too wiggy to be useful. I don"t think you need fantastic features either as you can feather the style to soften them.
