I'm too hot. Are there any good tops around for a woman whose bra straps are wide and whose upper arms are not her best feature?

Big norks. Not massively keen on my upper arms. Otherwise average. But am boiling hot and sporting unattractive sweaty patches atm and getting paranoid that everyone is noticing. What's out there in the very cool (in both senses of the word) top department? Am going to find something this evening but don't have much time so any tips gratefully received.:)

bloody hell - if you find anything please tell me. Desperate to hide my bingo wings and big baps too. Have given up - just flaunting it all at the moment and looking like I don't care. Don't know if I'm carrying it off though!!

ScummyMummy · 12/06/2006 16:11

When you say flaunting it all, what do you mean, dhw? I need to be braver I think. Are there vest tops around that will more or less cover bra straps?

I feel the exact same scummymummy!

although in town yesterday I seen all and I mean ALL shapes and sizes in strappy tops, maybe we sould be less self concious!

Mercy · 12/06/2006 16:15

Those very fine cotton kaftan-style tops are good for hot weather. Even my skinny 5 year old dd looks good in one!

Close fitting tops no good in these temperatures

buffythenappyslayer · 12/06/2006 16:15

i got some really nice tops from next the other day.they do 3 pack vest tops and the ones i got are wider than the usual strappy ones, they def cover my wide strapped nork holders!!!and they are nice, not like some of the grannyfied ones you see that have wider straps.

foxinsocks · 12/06/2006 16:18

there are some vest tops in GAP that cover wide bra straps - you need to go in, they are not the really strappy tops but in the bit where they have put all the layer stuff are lots of tops (all sorts of colours) that come quite high in the neck and under and over the shoulder. This isn't the exact one but it is similar to \link{http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=5769&pid=417349\this}

However, I find cotton short sleeved shirts fit the bill and they are cooler than vest tops. M&S has quite a few as do most of the high street at the mo.

ameli · 12/06/2006 16:18

YOU KNOW, YOU GUYS CAN STILL WEAR THE STRAPPY VEST EVEN WITH BIG BAPS AND BINGO WINGS. JUST PUT ON YER BRAS, THEN VESTS NOT SHOE STRING STARP VEST , BUT FULL ON SHOULDER. THEN TAKE A LIGHT SUMMER JACKET, IN LIGHT COLOR , FULL OR SHORT SLEAVE, TEAM WIV JEANS.....TA DA BINGO! IF YOU PARDON THE PLAY ON BINGO WINGS.

foxinsocks · 12/06/2006 16:19

that took me ages to type and Mercy has said the same as me Smile

Enid · 12/06/2006 16:22

I have big norks and fat arms atm

those floaty kaftany tops are fabby

vests look awful on me unless worn under tunicy top

Enid · 12/06/2006 16:22

oh and I also have baby bag tummy to hide too so lycra a no no

Enid · 12/06/2006 16:25

i have just bought a bold folky print top from Asda, cap sleeves, deep-ish v neck then a bottom that gently flares out in very fine cotton - you need a vest underneath over the bra as it is quite see through but very funky, its from their Fast Fashion range

buffythenappyslayer · 12/06/2006 16:25

i used to always wear dark colours because i felt i was too big to wear pale colours, plus i thought that dark colours would make me look 'not as big'!

my whole outlook changed after dd was born (shes my 5th baby) and was diagnosed with cf.

i stopped worrying what people thought about me,and realised that life is too short to worry about what i look like.

most of my wardrobe is now pale colours, ive even got 5 pairs of white trouers!

im big (size 18-20) and i now dress to suit me.yesterday i had my cropped white trousers on and a pale lemon 'wide strapped' vest top.i went for a walk and didnt care that my bingo wings were a flapping away!!!!

Enid · 12/06/2006 16:26

\link{http://www.george.com/womens/fast_fashion_jun06/2\this dress was nice too I thought}

CountessDracula · 12/06/2006 16:28

how about \link{http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=5769&pid=377613\this gap one?} I bought it at the weekend. It is bloody long though

CountessDracula · 12/06/2006 16:29

I also got a nice top in Coast that is floaty and has sort of cappy flappy sleeves ie only over the top.

Clary · 12/06/2006 16:33

Oh Enid I nearly bought that dress in Asda the other evening, but paused as not sure about colour.
Not my usual shade. But maybe OK in a dress? Price is a steal.

meowmix · 12/06/2006 16:33

I wish George did online shopping. why don't they?

bakedpotato · 12/06/2006 16:34

uniqlo has some pretty b/w/pink cotton-lawn tops, some with cap sleeves and T. Hardyesque smocky details... for £14.99. Albeit slightly seethrough but heck, my bras cost enough

ScummyMummy · 12/06/2006 16:48

Thank you, everyone. I will go and have a look in M&S and monsoon for floaty things as they are down the road and try Gap tomorrow. That is a nice dress Enid. I don't know if there is a central London Asda though.

I do not have bingo wings. It's just that my upper arms are not quite as svelte as I would like in an ideal world.

I have purchased some very pricey (by my standards) T-shirts - little sleeves, cap ones - from Kew, which are very very very light cotton indeed and go some way to distract from matronly arms, not least in diverting to matronly cleavage.

Cod · 12/06/2006 16:53

white stuff t shirt
hold on

Prufrock · 12/06/2006 16:54

Scummy - try \link{http://www.bravissimo.com/bravissimo/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=OV01&cid=Clothing_Strappy+Tops&language=en-GB\bravissimo} for their strappy tops with built in bra - they are really good bras - hold my enormous norks up. Just don't buy the white as teh material is a bit thin.

Cod · 12/06/2006 16:54

ScummyMummy · 12/06/2006 19:16

Trip to Monsoon a disaster- floaty tops and cute little cotton shirts that fitted my boobs made me look a frumpoona with no shape and those that fitted my waist wouldn't do up over the ample shelf of bosom.Angry And then my local M&S didn't seem to have anything nice in it- wah wah wah. Had to buy some too expensive cropped jeans from Hobbs to cheer myself up. Then saw 2 vests (non strappy kind) for £9 in Top Shop so thought how bad can they be and got a green one and a black one. Partner says they look good and I will also check with honest (aka brutal) friend. So I am feeling cooler wearing my crops and a vest now.:)

I really like the look of that white stuff t shirt, cod. And I was going to ask if anyone had tried the bravissimo strappy tops, Pru. Good to know they are an option. Thanks again all.
