Dungarees are WRONG...aren't they?

Tell me they are.

I've seen a pair on the Next Directory site...and they've stirred something within me. I've never worn dungarees. I've never even worn Next. But I think I want them. They look so comfy and free and happy.

Tell me I'm wrong and I need to go and have a nice lie down.

Actually, I did find that even when I had a fairly flat stomach, people did assume you were pregnant. If you are a bit thick waisted anyway (like me) or with a round stomach, you would be done for.

Blackduck · 11/06/2006 16:36

at least they aren't maternity ones......! On your experience LGJ why on earth would a pregnant woman want to wear the things...

ProfYaffle · 11/06/2006 16:36

I thought they looked great on dd until someone said to 'oh she looks positively alpine' in withering tones. She hasn't worn them since.

Snafu · 11/06/2006 16:37

Yeah, I probably would look like Bob the Builder in them. Still, ds would be pleased.

ahte them on older boys

Blackduck · 11/06/2006 16:39

ds has the loveliest pair for cord ones from Osh Kosh......sigh.....only work on boys up to about 2.5.....

southeastastra · 11/06/2006 16:54

i had some great gap ones when i was pg, but it was 12 years ago and grunge was in!

WideWebWitch · 11/06/2006 17:03

They are wrong Snafu. Unless this is the 70s and you're a feminist and we're in a time warp.

WideWebWitch · 11/06/2006 17:04

lol at alpine!

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 17:04

they are wrong

unless you are tall and thin

in which case they are quite nice.

otherwise, no, makes you look like a box.

motherinferior · 11/06/2006 17:06

WWW has it right on the nail.

I had some lovely white painters' dungarees in 1983 which I painted all over with various colourful designs. If any MNers is the evil person who nicked them out of the St John's College Oxford launderette, can I please have them back?

SoupDragon · 11/06/2006 17:07

Not that you aren't 6' tall and stick thin, Snafu. Obviously. As am I.

Snafu · 11/06/2006 17:16

You are all right, of course.

Look awful on anyone with hips!

MrsBadger · 11/06/2006 17:46

ooh, River Island has dungaree-looking dresses too (white or denim), but they are short.

WelshBoris · 11/06/2006 18:00

no no no not even if youre young and thin

the only girls who were them near me, wear them with the top down with playboy tshirts and matching babies called ikea

tassis · 11/06/2006 18:15

i've been given a maternity pair and was v surprised that they fit.

i am 6 foot and pregnant so i suspect they make me look like the side of a house.

can't quite bring myself to wear them.

dh wasn't convinced. politely said (when I pressed him for an opinion) that they weren't very flattering which I spspect translates that I looked like the side of a house.

snafu I quite understand the "they've stirred something in me"... i keep wanted to try them on again...

southeastastra · 11/06/2006 18:19

wear them! its a good excuse to wear whatever you like when pg (when else can you, blame hormones!)

Blackduck · 11/06/2006 19:46

MI - mine were pinched from Lancaster Uni - so I'm not the culprit! I still do use them for painting...
WWW - spot on!

HarpsichordCarrier · 11/06/2006 19:50

oh dear god NO Snafu.
a thousand times NO.
my friend wears them, even little shorty ones in pink. She thinks she looks cute, I imagine.
She is mistaken.

Snafu · 11/06/2006 20:14

LOL harpsi - shortie ones in pink completely miss the point, imo

Alright, you lot, I get the message. That audition for the Dexy's tribute band will just have to wait. Spoilsports.

I would have worn them to the MN summer meet, y'know... Grin

Vintage ones are ok!!
I have had a couple of pairs!!

SenoraPostrophe · 11/06/2006 20:33

dungarees are great.

In fact, my second thought on learning I was pregnant was "great, I'll be able to wear dungas without being stared at".

dinny · 11/06/2006 20:36

ooh, I used to love my denim dungers at university, lived in them. was thinking about them the other day. am liking the Next ones, must admit.....

marthamoo · 11/06/2006 20:38

I've always had a soft spot for dungarees - wore them a lot when I was a student (with my big old DM boots and stripey socks...) And I wore maternity ones in my first pregnancy.

But even though I think those look great, Snafu - I have to concur with the zeitgeist: unless you're 6 foot tall and have a supermodel type physique (no boobs permissable) you will look like Andrea Dworkin.

Damn it, I've stayed away for two weeks and it takes a thread on dungarees to make me crack.
