Please help me... I'm getting married in a months time and I don't like my dress

It's this one

Kind of nice - well, I thought so at the time - but I put it on yesterday and just felt deflated and dowdy. I look like someone's mum (well, I am someone's mum, but you know what I mean).

I also have this jacket and these shoes, both of which I love and definitely want to wear.

I'm thinking sell the dress on Ebay, and find something else? Or am I being a bit daft? DP thinks I look lovely in it, so maybe I should just go with the flow...?

I look good in green, generally I think. Can I get married in green?

Help!

I think your dress is gorgeous OP. What is it that you don't like about it? Does the shape flatter you?

I also wanted to add that when I tried on my own wedding dress (v expensive, much more traditionally bridal affair) on collection from the shop I felt distinctly deflated - but on the actual day I loved it again. It needed the full shebang of hair makeup underwear accessories etc to make the overall look if that makes sense?

On the other hand, if you simply haven't chosen the right dress for you then get back to the shops! JL personal shoppers are ace, maybe take along your dress, accessories and concerns and get some advice?

DewDr0p · 08/04/2013 12:59

Ah just seen your last post. I have the same issue - some outfits look distinctly better with certain bras rather than others ime. That shape would certainly suit my ample bosom. I suit a slightly longer jacket than the one you linked to - creates a much better line (for me).

How does the dress sit on you? Would some subtle alterations help?

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 08/04/2013 13:07

I have got some (hopefully) good undercrackers on order from Figleaves, so maybe they will make a difference.

I know what you mean about a longer line jacket, but I tried on millions of the things in JL and HoF with my style maven friend, and honestly that was the best one!

I'm not sure how it could be altered?
It's OK I suppose, I think I might feel better if I shifted a few pounds in the next few weeks (not that that's going to make much difference to the enormo-tits, but I can but try...)

Like a lot of other posters I would lose the jacket and keep the dress. If you don't like shawls what about a bolero style jacket or cardigan. Phase eight will have something that ties in with that dress. Try that out before you bin the whole dress. That said, once you've decided you're not comfortable in something it can be hard to wear it. I think the jacket would make most things mummy though. Nice enough but not for a wedding.

AgathaF · 08/04/2013 13:17

I'm not keen on the jacket either, and I don't think it goes with the dress. I like the dress. Does the colour suit you? Would it look better with a jacket/wrap/shawl with some colour in it? I know that you say you're not a shawly person, but have you tried some with the dress, just to see how they look?

AgathaF · 08/04/2013 13:18

Also, are you wearing the right size bra? I can recommend any of the thoroughly marvellous bra threads in S&B for advice if you are unsure.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 08/04/2013 13:22

Right. given that all of you are pretty much saying the same thing, and I did come here for advice after all, I am going to seriously rethink that jacket. A shrug could be the way forward maybe...

What about this one?

Thanks for all the advice, though. You lot are great Thanks

Agatha - yes, after many years of not wearing the right size, I've got that one cracked now, thank God. Good point though.

The Phase 8 dress is beautiful before I get started on alternative suggestions.

Would any of these work (with your jacket & shoes) do you think?

Dress 1: uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/3533317308

Dress 2: uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_4,mon_4.4/3532446308

Dress 3: uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/3532706008

The above are from Monsoon but I can browse a few other online shops for you Smile

WhatchaMaCalllit · 08/04/2013 13:31

I feel I should qualify my post above by saying that I don't think the jacket is wrong, but I'm not sure that the jacket goes with the dress. They are beautiful garments in their own right but may not be best suited to be worn together.

I found this dress on the BHS website and it's not too expensive at all:

Your original dress is amazing.

I think it's really common to have doubts about your wedding dress. I certainly did, but once my hair and make up was done I felt amazing! In the end I loved my dress.

nilbyname · 08/04/2013 13:36

I think the shrug/petite jacket thing really takes that lovely dress into "mother of the bride" territory.

I would go for something much more contemporary, a tux style jacket with a beaded flapper dress would look great!

With that dress, I think a shawl, pashmina type thing would look good.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 08/04/2013 13:40

I've put a pic on my profile moist :)

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 08/04/2013 14:27

Whatcha thank you for looking around for me. The BHS dress is really rather nice Shock I'd never have dreamed of looking there. I also like the 3rd Monsoon one, but the other two are a bit high necked for me.
However, I'm feeling very drawn to pale greeny shades at the moment.

Gin that's very reassuring, thank you Smile

nilbyname Yes! Mother of the bride is exactly what I'm worried about! Thing is, the dress looks lovely on the model, but just not so lovely on me. I'm 5'4" with huge boobs. Also, the ruching, once the dress is on, starts from the waist down with the top half being smoother, if you see what I mean. So it's just not as good as it looks in the picture.
But a flapper dress would be no good on me either, because of the aforementioned boobs. I need structure.

bullet your dress is absolutely sensational. Thanks for the pic. I hope you have a lovely day.

Would this type of jacket work? I've bought it to go with a nude/white lace dress for a wedding i'm going to, it works really well, and was the only one I found that would fit over my gigantic boobs Blush

TheRealFellatio · 08/04/2013 14:36

The dress is beautiful. I really like the jacket too, but together they say 'Mother of the Bride', and not 'Bride' to me. Maybe a big corsage might soften it, with a pillbox hat with a net? At the moment it doesn't look dowdy exactly, but maybe a touch officey.

The dress is a difficult colour to pull off. What is your colouring like?

(I am not enamoured with the pale green dress you've linked to it looked a tad twee.)

nilbyname · 08/04/2013 14:45

Bin the dress, keep the shoes and start again,

Look on Pinterest for inspiration, I would go for something with a lowing neckline, nipped in waist. How do you feel about your legs, want to show them off?

I am on my phone so hard to link, will be back later with ideas.

nilbyname · 08/04/2013 14:49

I love the first dress, and the phase eight dress, I'd wear either ( I'm a 36GG so I feel your ginormous boobs pain ;)) and feel the shape was good .. Don't like the jacket , unless like you say you would wear it to 'dress up' jeans -- I much preferred the jacket pootles posted x

DuchessFanny · 08/04/2013 15:03

Really like the Madeline shrug , however if I've ever tried this sort of volume from a cardi or bolero, I look very top heavy ! So that may not work ?

MadAboutHotChoc · 08/04/2013 15:06

Another one here who love the dress but not the jacket. The jacket is nice enough but does not go with the dress.

A bolero jacket would work well - can you go back to the store and ask them for help in choosing a more suitable jacket?

TheRealFellatio · 08/04/2013 15:07

this is lovely.
