Budding perfumistas walk this way- Part 2 of the Worst Perfumes ever

As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

CointreauVersial · 12/12/2012 17:44

Yes, I think Tea for Two is discontinued, so I might try to bag a larger decant before my sample runs dry.

Talking of citrus perfumes going "off" - many moons ago, my everyday perfume was YSL In Love Again. I just kept it on my dressing table without a box. One day, I forgot to put any on, and picked up a tester in a department store - wham! I couldn't believe it was the same stuff! All the lovely grapefruit top notes had completely vanished from my bottle, and using it daily, I hadn't even noticed.

DonaAna · 12/12/2012 18:48

In Love Again is great - by JC Ellena, although it's hard to believe.
I really should go to the Hermes boutique to try the new Jour d'Hermes. Has anyone sampled it yet?

I'm relaxing after a long and headache-inducing day with Le Parfum de Therese. "Ravishingly beautiful" is an understatement for this one. If anyone wishes to sample Frederic Malle perfumes, Les Senteurs do inexpensive samples of the Malle line. Really worth sampling, some of the best perfumes I know.

kiwigirl42 · 12/12/2012 23:42

Shalimar pure parfum tonight . Nice and cosy when its so cold outside. I forgot to take my painkillers and anti convulsants for fibro/ migraine today and have been feeling unbearably dreadful all day until I realised why. Doh! So Shalimar making me feel relaxed. Its such a familiar, comforting smell to me. I was lucky enough to snag a 30ml pure parfum tester on Ebay a few months back so don't have to feel guilty about indulging. Saying that, i really like the EDT with its fresh top notes. I even love the Perfume Parlour copy Grin

I 'm keen to explore Chanel #5/ premiere and Chanel #19/ poudre as I feel I have reached an age to enjoy them.
So sample purchases upcoming. I wore Coco and then Coco Madamoiselle for yrs and always got nice comments about them.

I really hate it when people keep perfume for 'best' or 'going out' only. Glad we all indulge ourselves and keep exploring Envy

fizzypops · 13/12/2012 10:19

has anyone tried the Elie Saab perfume? I had a sample in a magazine and adored it. not sure whether to buy it for myself for Christmas...

CointreauVersial · 13/12/2012 13:03

I've very chuffed, as DH has just booked me onto this perfume making workshop as part of my birthday present (normally £80, it was £29 through Groupon - the deal has another day to run, if any of you perfumistas are in the South East and fancy a go yourselves....).

I'm dying to learn more about the subject, so it should be really interesting.

TheCountessOlenska · 13/12/2012 13:13

Only just seen this thread! I am a recent Angel fan (posted a thread about it at the time) - Love it but just hope I am not leaving a trail of migraines behind me!

kiwigirl how strange, I am wearing Shalimar today as well! (eau de toilette though) I can never decide if I like it on me or if it's a bit "old" ??

I find many perfumes of recent years to be a bit wishy washy so I will read back through this thread with interest

butterfliesinmytummy · 13/12/2012 13:27

Yay, got my samples today. Tried a little of l'air du desert but its worn off after 4 hours (didn't want to waste it at the end of the day so dabbed a tiny bit on and will try it again tomorrow) but can still smell puredistance m. It's settled to a slightly powdery leathery warmth and reminds me of my grandma who died 12 years ago. I've no idea which perfume she wore but I immediately thought of her, how strange!

Haberdashery · 13/12/2012 14:20

Oooh, that looks fun, Cointreau (and it's almost round the corner from me).

MadAboutHotChoc · 13/12/2012 18:52

I adore Chanel No 5 - it smells great on me but can't afford to replace it, any suggestions please for similar perfumes?

YouOldTinsellySlag · 13/12/2012 18:59

I know it sounds mad but some people say Coty's L'Aimant smells similar to Chanel no5.

Or try ebay and try and get a used bottle for less than a brand new one.

vacuuming · 13/12/2012 22:56

I tried lady gaga fame today. it smells like Exclaimation Shock
I was very disappointed by it, though I didn't expect to like it.

kiwigirl42 · 14/12/2012 00:16

Madabouthotchoc Try the Perfume Parlour for perfume oils. They should have a Chanel #5 smell a like. i got a Shalimar one for about £3 and it smelt very similar to the real thing

JuliaFlyte · 14/12/2012 12:18

I was just reading this and I thought you perfume ladies might be interested Smile

shoeprincess2 · 14/12/2012 13:47

Great link Julia. Can't get samples online unfortunately. I am very excited, as I now have in my possession the purse spray of Loretta. 7mls of eau de parfum. That will keep me going awhile. Will purchase L'Air du Desert Marocain in the New Year.

FizzyPops- Elie Saab is a lovely fragrance- my friend wears it a lot, so i just tend to have a squirt of it when she has it in her handbag. Probably one of the nicer ones in the department stores at the moment.

flybynight · 14/12/2012 14:33

Since I have introduced to Surrender to Chance on this thread, I have become a proper perfume obsessive. And at the moment, pretty much anything woody by Serge Lutens is obsessing me.

I'd be interested in people's views - I'm torn between Arabie, Santal Majuscule and Borneo 1834. (I like Chypre Rouge too, but it has a sweetness about it that I'm not mad about) All woody and spicy and so WARM! Considering I'm looking to replace Chanel No 19, it has been a revelation. I've never come across perfumes so complex and interesting. And they last for hours. I've got the Santal on at the moment, and when I sniff it, I get a little physical thrill!

I need to go and buy Christmas trees now. In the freezing rain. How festive.

henbane · 14/12/2012 14:41

Tinselly (I hesitate to call you Slag) have you actually bought any used bottles on ebay? I'm a bit wary in case they've been diluted with anything - but now desperate as my staple Gio has been discontinued and full bottles are going for silly money!

YouOldTinsellySlag · 14/12/2012 14:48

Yes, loads and I am very satisfied. I have bought unboxed Cabotine for 6.95, an Elizabeth Taylor one, (dreadful!) and a Gianfranco Ferre for less than 3.00. IMO none have been diluted and they are just unwanted gifts. I always resell them when I don't like them. I would recommend it.

On boxing day I will be bidding for a bottle of Cristalle!

YouOldTinsellySlag · 14/12/2012 14:51

My perfume tip- bid on Boxing Day! The world will be inundated with women who got bought the wrong stuff!

kiwigirl42 · 14/12/2012 17:41

I'm waiting for Boxing day too! I've bought used bottles on ebay and they have all been ok. I think they are more likely to be ok than some of the news ones which can be fakes.

flybynight I love Serge Lutens, especially the Christopher Sheldrake ones. I have a bottle of Ambre Sultan which is just gorgeous, warm, spicy, yum. He has released so many in the last couple of years though that I've fallen behind in sampling them

henbane · 14/12/2012 17:46

Good tip re Boxing Day - though no hope for Gio as it was discontinued in April I think Xmas Sad

YouOldTinsellySlag · 14/12/2012 22:00

If it was only discontinued in April I reckon it'll still be around for a while before supplies dry up! With love has been discontinued as has Secret Obsession and they are everywhere right now at good prices. You never know, it's worth a look on ebay...

ThatsNice · 15/12/2012 14:08

Thanks for the perfume parlor tip! I've ordered the smell-a-like Noa to replace my real Noa that's gone bad Confused Hope it smells as good Smile

babySophieRose · 15/12/2012 19:49

My favorite at the moment is Bvlgari Jasmin Noir. I think It's gorgeous.

fayeso · 17/12/2012 13:41

I have been reading and watching this thread and decided to order myself a sample of Angel perfume as am intrigued as to see wether it is as awful as SOME people say.......................well I sprayed a little on my wrist yesterday morning and then spent the whole day feeling sick and the result being that I had to have a shower and then put all my clothes in the washing machine straight away......................I am glad I did not buy the whole bottle and am still in shock about how a perfume can smell so rotten on me!!!!I am sure it dosen't smell like this on others................................I almost want to give it another go but the thought of just spraying a tiny bit is making me feel ill..........
Such a shame as I love the name of it and the bottle......................

YouOldTinsellySlag · 17/12/2012 13:49

Angel is Marmite. you either love it or hate it.
