Budding perfumistas walk this way- Part 2 of the Worst Perfumes ever

As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

OP posts:

How are you not bankrupt DonaAna? Confused

DonaAna · 19/11/2012 18:06

Nothing wrong with Shalimar Parfum Initial. It's actually one of my duty-free faves (along with La vie est belle). Yummy but not tacky. One of the very few freebie samples I've used up. If you like it, gourmands are your territory and Angel's descendants worth exploring.

DonaAna · 19/11/2012 18:11

BOF I mostly collect samples (and when you know a bit about perfumes friends and perfumers start sending them to you). I have a good job though... But most of the perfume lovers I know are students or SAHMs - when you buy wisely and trade what you have it is not expensive at all. The key is to avoid full bottle purchases.

BOFingSanta · 19/11/2012 18:18

I am a bit embarrassed at liking a Per Una anything, but I'm trying to be open-minded Grin

CointreauVersial · 19/11/2012 18:35

BOF, don't be embarrassed about liking Per Una - one of my fave daytime perfumes is Next Just Pink.

So my fragrance is synthetic, poor quality and not as good as it used to be.

And yours is gaudy, over-embellished and best left to the more mature lady. Wink Grin

the classic blue-black Rive Gauche

I adore that! It reminds me of my aunts when I was a little girl.

yellowbottle · 19/11/2012 21:11

Oh no! The only perfume I would ever go so far to say that I actually hate is Angel. I must explore Gourmands, I'm trying to work out what it is that I like and dislike. But, you nasty nasty people have me hooked on Fragrantica. I have a spreadsheet with all of the perfumes I've ever had and liked, trying to find links between the notes, bergamot top notes, jasmine middle notes and vetiver base notes seem to be the most popular, according to my sheet. I've also started a bit of a wishlist for myself on Surrender to Chance. Blush. Get thee behind me satans!! Grin

Haberdashery · 19/11/2012 21:34

I have a spreadsheet with all of the perfumes I've ever had and liked, trying to find links between the notes

Ooooh. This is actually a top idea. Thank you.

FellatioNelson · 20/11/2012 05:41

How funny - I was just thinking of doing the same myself this morning!

(not that I'd know how to do a spread sheet if my life depended on it - mine would likely be in the form of scribbled notes on paper napkins in the bottom of my handbag. Confused)

MadameCastafiore · 20/11/2012 05:48

Lancôme la Vie est Belle (think that's what it's called) is lovely, DH got me some for birthday and everyone has commented on it.

No Malone Pomegranate Noir is also fab.

I have a Prada one in small black rectangular bottle that DH let DS pick out (obviously shape of bottle swung decision) at the airport when they were away and it is bloody awful, I spray some in the loo now and then to use it up!

anniewoo · 20/11/2012 07:20

Thank you ShoePrincess- it was Tuberose Criminalle that inspired me to start tthe thread ' The Worst Perfume Ever'.
Does anybody else think Lancome's Hypnose has more than a hint of 'Brut' ( the 1970's men's aftershave) about it???Grin

Maraki · 20/11/2012 08:51

Hello All
I've been following this thread with interest and I wanted to say thank you for the StC site recommendation. Now I have the opportunity to test drive my wish list purchases before I commit to full bottles!!!

My all time favourites are Chanel Bois des Iles, Sisley Eau du Soir, Chanel Cristalle, Miss Dior.. I am planning on ordering Annick Goutal's Eau du Sud, Ninfeo Mio. Shame they don't have samples of Chanel 19 Poudre, I am seriously considering purchasing it.

I am a chypre girl, if you have any recommendations for others I may like do let me know.

Oh and to answer the thread title: my worst perfume ever is Eternity. Tackiest perfume ever!

ThatsNice · 20/11/2012 11:38

Maraki, have you tried searching eBay for samples? You might get them in there if stc don't have them.

DonaAna · 20/11/2012 11:54

Maraki - a great article on chypres here - see the comments part on discussions about how IFRA restrictions have changed/endangered this great group of perfumes & suggestions of ones to try. Vintage (from eBay etc) is the way to go.

I'm lamenting a ruined perfume right now. I have some vintage extrait and it is perfection. Bought some more off eBay hoping it was old enough to be pre-reformulation. It isn't: thin, strident and sad, nothing like the original.

DonaAna · 20/11/2012 11:55

Sorry, link here.

kiwigirl42 · 20/11/2012 12:11

just posted this in completely the wrong thread. doh! so here goes again:

I've just ordered a Shalimar type oil from Perfume Parlour to see what its like. thank you fridgepants

I've tried on Lolita Lempicka today - its just completely disappeared into my skin and I can't smell anything.
So I put Prada Candy on the other arm. Its nice enough - caramel and musk once the candyfloss top notes dissipate. I'm a bit Meh! about it though.

Haberdashery · 20/11/2012 12:17

My favourite chypre is Ma Griffe. It's available very cheaply on Amazon etc these days.

LtheWife · 20/11/2012 12:29

I wore Prada Candy for the first time yesterday kiwigirl. Like you say, it's nice enough and I'll have to try it again but I was definitely left feeling quite indifferent about it.

DonaAna · 20/11/2012 12:43

Candy is meh for me too - nicely done for mainstream but I feel like a gigantic creme brulee wearing it. That's the problem of many gourmands. You get tired of smelling delicious. I especially hate it when my perfume clashes with food. But a good gourmand is very comforting for when one feels low.

Maraki · 20/11/2012 12:49

Thank you DonaAna for article, this explains why my (very old) Bois des Iles is so much nicer than the current Exclusifs versions by Chanel.

I have found some No19 Poudre on ebay, I am being a bit cautious though as there are so many fakes on ebay, especially Chanels.

ThatsNice · 20/11/2012 12:52

My sample of black dahlia arrived this morning. Loved it when I first put it on. As its developing, something else is making itself known and I really am not keen at all Sad It is a quite cloying and sickly note. I vaguely recall smelling it (the note) in something else I disliked and I can't for the life if me think what... huffs On the other hand (literally!) , my other sample that arrived, Chanel crystalle, I disliked as I put it on. It however is now smelling really lovely and very wearable Smile

ThatsNice · 20/11/2012 12:54

Maraki, I was a bit dubious about fakes too but figured if they had excellent feedback and had been trading a while, they must (hopefully) be trustworthy?

CointreauVersial · 20/11/2012 13:07

Haberdashery - my mum used to wear Ma Griffe. Haven't smelled it for ages.

Anniewoo - I wear Hypnose quite often, but hadn't thought about Brut connections. Not sure I even remember the "great smell of Brut" tbh!

Well, after hearing you lot rave about Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio, I found someone on eBay selling samples. Then I looked at what else they had on offer (made sense, once I was paying postage, surely?)......now I have yet another package on its way. Blush

Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain
Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille
L'Artisan Parfumeur Tea for Two
and the above-mention Ninfeo Mio

I'm loving this!

Tom Ford Tuscan Leather today, which has now settled into the lovely warm, woody phase.

ThatsNice · 20/11/2012 13:38

Gonna have to go scrub my hand to try and get rid of the black dahlia..is making me feel sick... Sad Don't think I'll be wearing this one again...
