The Worst perfume ever!

Was in HOF today and as i have no money at the moment to spend (despite their sale) decided to cheer myself up with a spray ( or two) of their posh perfumes. Big Mistake- sprayed Serge lutyens Tuberose Criminale- and it was!!!! Well the smell was criminal- like camphor, moth balls mixed with wintergreen , that awful muscle rub stuff. Jesus wept and it lasts and lasts and lasts. Can't kill it off, despite Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio on my other wrist. You have been warned.....Though i do dare you!!!

badvoc I had the Next Cashmere. It is lovely. I might get another bottle to tide me over til I can afford to splurge a bit.

kiwigirl You've just reminded me that I used to wear So De La Renta. I had forgotton all about that one.

kiwigirl42 · 15/10/2012 15:47

I've tried a sample of Balenciaga today. It does dry down to violet but its not for me. I've decided that I love the smell of violets but never like to smell like them - too powdery with that funny old lady edge - sort of like old face powder?

coffeeinbed · 15/10/2012 18:22

[kiwi] you're hard to please! Grin
One more - the opposite of powdery, cedar and spices though - Bois Des Violettes.
It's Feminite de Bois and some violets.
I did see it in Liberty. Hope they still have it.

jollymary · 15/10/2012 22:14

What a fab thread! I got married 17 years ago wearing Tresor. I keep coming back to it, I don't put alot on at once but it does seem to smell good on me and last well, and I get compliments. I think I'm ready to try something else, though, don't know if it's just happy memories that keep me with Tresor.
Which of these more niche scents should I try, given that I am drawn to roses/oranges? Would like something lighter and a bit more unusual!

kiwigirl42 · 16/10/2012 00:39

I am hard to please but I know what I like immediately!

kiwigirl42 · 16/10/2012 00:39

Ps is the bois de violettes Serge Lutens?

coffeeinbed · 16/10/2012 09:05

It is.

jollymary · 16/10/2012 12:15

oops, apear to have killed this thread stone dead, with my penchant for sweet high street scent, sorry everyone........

YouOldSlag · 16/10/2012 12:32

Jollymary- if you like oranges try Jesus del Pozo Ambar, there is some wintry spice in it, but it's really sharp and orangey and gorgeous ( and not expensive).

I order all my fragrance online these days because a) it's cheaper and b) there's about a million more choices.

The drawback is you can't test them, but it's easy to re-sell on ebay and you almost always make most or all of your money back.

HUGE demand for used perfume on ebay!

CointreauVersial · 16/10/2012 13:23

I'm amazed people buy used perfume on eBay!

I have a bottle of Gucci by Gucci - one squirt was enough for me to know I'll never like it - but I think I chucked the box.

So I can flog it and buy something nicer, you say??? Hmmmm.

YouOldSlag · 16/10/2012 13:26

Oh yes Cointreau- some of it is in real demand- have a browse, people even sell the empty bottles to colectors1

YouOldSlag · 16/10/2012 13:38

It's especially good when someone has bought your favourite fragrance, used one squirt, then sells it on ebay so you can get it for about half the RRP.

MysteriousHamster · 16/10/2012 14:39

I'm pleasantly surprised by eBay for perfume - I never make anything selling clothes on there. But used and boxless perfume definitely sells quite well. Worth a go for any bottles you don't want any more!

I tried SJP's Covet yesterday as I bought it cheap a while ago. I seemed to recall liking it before but yesterday I found the smell a bit too lemon-cleaner-ish at first, and then I was coughing for the rest of the evening so I'm probably allergic to it.

Does anyone else have a problem with allergies and perfumes? I love scent but I'm allergic to a few things so my sense of smell is non-existant some days, and some perfumes make me sneeze like crazy while others are fine.

YouOldSlag · 16/10/2012 16:57

Some scents give me headaches but I can't pinpoint which ones. It's probably just from sniffing too many.

Yes ebay is perfect for fumeheads. I have sold bottles that I have bought blind and bought bottles that I have yearned for. I am amazed at how high the prices get. It's also interesting to see the scarcity value of certain scents (Gucci Envy sadly discontinued goes sky high) and the ones that everyone wants i.e Chloe Signature, any Chanel etc.

I have seen vintage Jicky and Mitsouko, vintage Avon bottles, and bottles with just an inch of scent in going for just under twenty quid.

Oh the things I've seen!

jollymary · 16/10/2012 17:12

Thanks +++ for suggestion, YOS, will try it x

squoosh · 16/10/2012 17:18

Liberty have just cancelled my Molecule 01 order as they're out of stock. Grrrrr, so annoying. Fear not, I have tracked down another vendor. It WILL be mine!

SorrelForbes · 16/10/2012 18:10

My sample of Cuir de Lancôme arrived today. I've had it on for about two hours now and I'm very unsure. Too powdery for me I think.

MsArseBiscuit · 16/10/2012 18:35

Squoosh, I bought mine from Amazon, your problems with Liberty don't surprise me - I've had biiiiig ishoos with them.

ifancyashandy · 16/10/2012 18:42

Just gegging in at the end so apologies if already done but I have real trouble with perfumes. I love Chanel No's 5 & 19 and also the original CoCo. Hate most others as they just turn powdery & floral on my skin. Also like but never bought an Hermes on and Creed Island Water. Spent the summer wearing (watch out for the awful name!) Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess - which basically smells like suntan oil of old!

But just bought Agent P 'Petal Noir' and like it for evenings - it's got a note of tobacco, which sounds awful but softens to a lovely, deep scent.

Any of you genii(sp?) know any others I'd like. Chanel No5 is definitely my 'go to' scent for every day and Coco in the evening....

MadameOvary · 16/10/2012 18:46

eBay is indeed wondrous for rare perfume. A bottle of Aveda Bliss is now mine after years of pining for it. Smile

MadameOvary · 16/10/2012 18:48

To those who PMed me - sent your phials today. Look out for them in the post.

UltraBOF · 16/10/2012 19:19

Ooh, exciting! Thanks MmeO.

I'm wearing my sample of Voleur de Roses. I like it, and so does DP- he'd wear it, he says. I'm not sure what people mean by 'powdery' exactly, but I suspect this may have a tendency to that, as my only slightly negative thoughts about it are that I prefer my scents more 'wet'-smelling, if that makes sense?

My favourite so far is still Tuscan Leather, but much as I love it, and have worn it more than DP has, it does feel a bit too masculine for me. It's like sleeping with your boyfriend's Tshirt: you love inhaling the smell yourself, but you don't necessarily want other people to smell it on you, IYSWIM. I'm looking forward to trying some other leather-based scents though, and if I come into money, I'll get the Tom Ford TL for DP.

SorrelForbes · 16/10/2012 19:23

I think when I say 'powdery' I really mean a cross between old fashioned face powder and baby powder. I found Tabac Blonde much too 'old lady' and Cuir de Lancome isn't far off. My favourite is is also Tuscan Leather but DH wears it everyday so I'd really like to find a few scents of my own.

coffeeinbed · 16/10/2012 19:24

MadameO,
I actually bought a bottle of Not a perfume.
Don't laugh.
I love it.
Ifancy, I love Petal Noir.
I do however hate with a passion don't get on with anything Chanel, take my recommendation with caution.
Hermes Hiris.
It has iris, as 19 and stays this side of powdery.
The new Dyptique - Volutes, has tobacco and Iris.
