Why don't I like/want White Stuff, Fat Face et all?

I just don't get them. I 've tried really really hard, bought stuff and never worn looked and looked, but I don't like it.

I think I am in the demographic and everyone at my daughter's school wears it. But empire line tunics still Shock, didn't they go out of fashion about 5 years ago? Everything just looks droopy, twee or unfinished. They look like thy found a style that worked a few years ago, and stuck with it, and haven't moved on from there. I like the natural fibres but have tried so so hard to ike it, but it leaves me feeling droopy and irritated. When I see that label on White Stuff saying "You found me" I want to scream. I know most people on Mumsnet love it, so I guess I'm a freak

Because it's all very samey each season? And a bit long-lost hippie ( I am old enough to remember was a hippie.)

I like their T shirts, some cardis and jumpers as long as they are not droopy or embelished - especially with birds. Yuck.

Andy they are expensive. Have yet to pick up a cardi etc that is not £47.50

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 16:25

Yes hippie is the word. I've never liked anything remotely hippyish

I think it's all horribly frumpy, although there was a lovely origami bird scarf on the flyer in a magazine I bought today which I'm considering.

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 16:33

Ys, I think the scarves are nice. The jumpers are so itchy too

Too thin, soft and floppy, too muted and too all over flowery and just a bit droopy.

Very Mumsy.

I want some thing with a bit more structure and a more graphic pattern. Not quite sure how to describe it, but I have a navy animal T shirt with sticking offset cream flowers that I like far better.

NoComet · 27/08/2012 16:35

Striking

FunnyLittleFrog · 27/08/2012 16:39

Don't force yourself into it - there are loads of other shops out there.

boodles · 27/08/2012 16:42

Fat Face is good for casuals. I have a pair of their cargo shorts which are fab. I also have some skinny cropped jeans which are lovely too. I am not so keen on their tops/cardis but I think that is because I find them expensive.

stargirl1701 · 27/08/2012 16:45

I really like Fat Face. I have an aversion to 'fashion' and hate how clothes keep changing. I know what I like and what I want to wear. I want similar clothes to be available each season. I look at most other shops and think No Way.

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 16:45

I like FatFace's ethos, the use of natural fibers, etc, but the prices seem a bit high for what you get. I have a couple of summer skirts (one which I love to bits) and a check shirt, all good, but not really substantial enough to qualify charging £40 per item. Some of the sizing is out of whack also.

But, the staff and customer service have been awesome, so I highly recommend them for that.

Certainly wouldn't call any of the FatFace stuff 'frumpy'. Just pretty basic really.

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 16:45

But Funny I feel I should like it. But I agree with Starball, I like bolder more graphic striking stuff.

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 16:46

And still, this stuff is more flattering, less pricey and far less surreal than what you'll find at Toast.

champagnesupernova · 27/08/2012 16:47

okay, so where else are folk shopping though?
I am v much in the demographic (age 34, 2 kids and size 14) and have a fair few items from WS.
I need an empire line tunic to hide muffin top tbh
Feel far too old for Top Shop

LoveMyBoots · 27/08/2012 16:52

When I see that label on White Stuff saying "You found me" I want to scream.

Agree! It makes my teeth itch. How difficult do they think it is to find their clothes?

boodles · 27/08/2012 16:59

Champagne, I am 38, 3kids, size 10 and mainly shop in H&M, I can find good casuals and work stuff there (where I work it isn't your usual clean type of office and so 'fancy' work clothes would get ruined).

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 16:59

I hate the whole image. "Happy clothes for Happy people" Yuk! I prefer something tougher than that!

I like Hobbs NW3 and Oasis at the moment. I do like FF jeans tho.

White stuff - frumpy. Boden, expensive and frumpy.

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 17:03

champagne depends what you are willing to pay. I like Massimo dutti, Zara and Aubin&Wills. Avoid the likes of Topshop more due to shit quality than age - it's just all transparent tat these days anyway. Gone are the days when anyone of any age could shop there. Only the very young will overlook this issue.

I also like having a look through John Lewis online, there are many brands to choose from and they update regularly.

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 17:04

I want cynical clothes for cynical people. That might draw me in;)

DonaAna · 27/08/2012 17:05

Because your personal style is different.
I find things I like in Zara and COS but not there.

PuppyMonkey · 27/08/2012 17:05

But why do you think you are particularly odd when there are about 50 threads a year on MN where people say they don't like White Stuff? Liking it is actually more unusual on here.

I think it's ok, used to like it more but have got bored of it. But hey ho, you don't like it why say you feel as if you ought to like it? Just shop somewhere else then.

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 17:06

TT perfect! I would shop there!

OP posts:
orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 17:07

I don't know, I just feel I should as every other mother in my daughter's school wears it. I feel like it is some sort of club that I don't understand.

I prefer Cos

Caerlaverock · 27/08/2012 17:07

I hate the whole 'put a bird on it ' fake vintage shit vibe in the shops and yes the clothes are not really my taste but I i have friends who look great in it

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 17:12

caerlaverock or an owl!
