Why don't I like/want White Stuff, Fat Face et all?

I just don't get them. I 've tried really really hard, bought stuff and never worn looked and looked, but I don't like it.

I think I am in the demographic and everyone at my daughter's school wears it. But empire line tunics still Shock, didn't they go out of fashion about 5 years ago? Everything just looks droopy, twee or unfinished. They look like thy found a style that worked a few years ago, and stuck with it, and haven't moved on from there. I like the natural fibres but have tried so so hard to ike it, but it leaves me feeling droopy and irritated. When I see that label on White Stuff saying "You found me" I want to scream. I know most people on Mumsnet love it, so I guess I'm a freak

Yes enough with the fecking owls

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2012 18:39

Lol at cynical clothes for cynical people - that's exactly what I want!

Fat Face is far too colourful and shapeless for my liking. It reminds me of Playschool presenters.

And White Stuff v v occasionally has something okay (bags, tights) but it is expensive and pretty shoddy quality for the price, I think.

justasecond · 27/08/2012 18:44

walked past a white stuff concession in hof at the weekend and it all looked old and faded like it had been washed to death and hung up. Also I like a floral as much as anyone but whats with the circa 2001 wallpaper prints?

talkingnonsense · 27/08/2012 18:54

White stuff is often poor quality for the price, but they are better if you are a size 14ish than Zara or top shop. I think boden is better quality, but I have one of each of the things I like from there! Hobbs is nice but £££, gap tops always seem to be very thin cotton ( too clingy to a muffin top).... I've no idea where to shop!
At 41 I feel too old for top shop, hate next, don't have h and m, don't have the money for Hobbs- where do you guys shop?!

happybubblebrain · 27/08/2012 19:05

I like H&M and Monsoon most right now. Sometimes I like French Connection.

White stuff and Fat Face sometimes have nice things, but not often.

I can't stand Zara, very very boring and rubbish quality. Hobbs is also boring and extremely expensive.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2012 19:05

Gap t-shirts are awful quality - I've completely given up on them.

Have you tried Warehouse? If you ignore the polyester nightmares there are sometimes some nice things. Oasis for jeans or the M&S jeggings - neither give a muffin top. M&S Autograph for occasional nice tops, or Hobbs outlet.

orangeandlemons · 27/08/2012 19:57

I don't know where to shop. I feel there is a huge gap in the market. I don't really like any shops on the High Street. At 45 nothingseems to appeal, and yet I have money for it. Mint Velvet is OK and like Cos. Most of my stuff comes from John Lewis as they have lots of interesting concessions.

Next-Polyester Nightmare
H and M Ok if you can get past queues, teens and polyster shit. But sizes totally random, and very badly made
Zara Another shop I don't get, full of polyester crap
M and S Ok for basics but fashion can be dodgy
DP ditto polyester
Top shop too young
River Island _don't understand must be too old
Gap: Expensive and boring

So nowhere really. Agree Warehouse can have some good bits if you look, but that's it

I end up back in Debenham's a bit dull and middle aged, but at least the fabrics reasonably thick.

DD1's white stuff dress is pretty (less ditsy flowers than most), but it's the thinnest jersey and crumples and clings.

NoComet · 27/08/2012 20:05

Oh and please, please, please, why is the only alternative to floral grey (makes me look ancient) or stripes.

I have 7 striped topsBlush

DonaAna · 27/08/2012 20:11

Zara has gone too synthetic of late. But I have lots of good timeless Zara pieces from past seasons that are 100% cotton or silk.

This may be a personal thing but at almost 40 I have enough clothes - I don't really need more. Hence, it's much more fruitful to buy really nice things, save up for more expensive clothes. I occasionally find something in Zara and COS but also like charity shops (very good quality clothes if you keep looking), Outnet, and high end during sales time.

AlfalfaMum · 27/08/2012 20:49

Its all very middle-class mummy.
YY to whoever said shapeless, it's as if everything is designed to hide a postpartum tummy. I've been doing loads of Pilates and ashtanga and actually have a waist again, but you wouldn't know it to look at me because I am wearing a bloody FF top Hmm
Also I've noticed the clothes don't wash well at all at all at all, which is shit considering the ££

I don't know where to shop, either. The best outfit I bought this year was from New Look.

It's all a bit wafty isn't it.
Some nice things though, as with most shops. My favourite pair of (boyfriend) jeans are FatFace and sometimes their summer dresses are lovely.

White Stuff quality for the price is very poor, wool items overly itchy and everything's a bit drippy.

I have some really nice clothes from Fat Face - burgundy skinnies, vest tops, t-shirts, jumpers etc. but some of the stuff is a bit samey every year. I don't get anything from White Stuff but one of my friends is a big fan and always looks really nice in their stuff.

Kernowgal · 27/08/2012 21:40

Hehehehe at "wafty".

Some of FF I like, but I have to pick and choose. I managed to get a lovely stripy (yeah, I live in stripes) maxi dress there earlier this year for £25; shame the weather's been so shit I've not had a chance to wear it. In the sale it's brilliant but you have to get there early. It pees me off that they only do some jeans styles in longer lengths. Why not all? And yes a lot of it is vastly overpriced. The sizing is skew-whiff - I have one denim skirt in a 14 that is -ahem- neat, and another in a 14 that's more like a 16 and turns around when I walk :/

I quite like Seasalt too but I find a lot of their stuff a bit twee and shapeless, not to mention feckin expensive. White Stuff is meh.

I long for a John Lewis - there's one opening in Exeter in October and I can't wait.

Kernowgal · 27/08/2012 21:41

And yes, what is with all the synthetic fabrics everywhere? I feel like if I walk too fast into a shop the whole place is going to crackle and spontaneously combust.

BombusBombus · 28/08/2012 16:19

Birds are so over.
I like great plains who seem to innovate each season whilst keeping good quality basics.

champagnesupernova · 13/09/2012 11:33

bump

This link helped explain why I dislike White Stuff - its not "me". Some of my friends look great in this stuff but I can't do drapey droopy clothes.

Ephiny · 13/09/2012 11:48

I want to like FatFace etc, when I look in their shops I think everything looks lovely and I want it all. But when I actually put it on? No.

It's all too baggy and shapeless, I need clothes a bit more tailored/fitted, though that isn't easy to find.
