MIL would like to buy me this for Xmas!

MIL has offered to buy me this dress for Xmas!

She loves the label itself and thinks that it would suit me. I have a few reservations though (like the price for one, it's a very generous offer to say the least!)

Can I have some opinions on the dress itself please and also if you do like it where would you where it, what would you wear it with? I don't wear dresses very often and if I do it's more a dinner at Zizzi's occasion IYKWIM. I do think it's rather beautiful though.

(Last year she bought me a magazine subscription, I must have done something right!)

My opinion is that it is July.

lisaro · 27/07/2012 16:24

Sorry, I think it's hideous. But no doubt someone will come along and love it. Ido wonder why your MIL would choose a specific (ugly)dress for you for Christmas in July.

SmilingandWaving · 27/07/2012 16:24

I know, I know. I did think that when she mentioned it.

Is this a stealth boast? Wink sorry but I can think of much nicer things to spend that kind if money on Grin

Zippylovesgeorge · 27/07/2012 16:26

Not my sort of thing - £300 is alot for something you won't wear much.

SmilingandWaving · 27/07/2012 16:27

I think because she's bought things from them before and I am wearing a dress today which prompted a discussion as to why I don't wear them more often and eventually got to 'you'd look lovely in this, why don't I get you it for Xmas' kind of thing.

I did quite like the butterfly's.

I don't like it at all. Its looks like something Eddie might wear in Absolutely Fabulous.

imnotmymum · 27/07/2012 16:30

That dress is truly awful. She is stitching you up.

FireOverBabylon · 27/07/2012 16:34

Hell's bells - get it now whilst it's half price in the sale! I think it would go with coloured 80 denier tights and black shoes, either in the evening or for Sunday lunch. It's lovely and floaty, I'd have my MiL's arm off if she offered to buy them for me.

But:

Are the sleeve rather long or is the hem rather short? [turning into my mother emoticon]

I'd also be concerned about the sizing - "small medium" and "medium large" are quite limited in terms of getting a dress that will fit but not look like a tent.

FireOverBabylon · 27/07/2012 16:35

Oh, just me who likes it then? Sad

JintoTheFinal · 27/07/2012 16:36

I think it looks like it belongs at a medieval reenactment

Hopefully · 27/07/2012 16:37

I think it's quite an interesting dress (although not something I would wear - I look like a drag queen in floaty things). However, I would mainly worry about the complete lack of versatility - everyone will remember it, so it might feel 'old' after not-that-many outings, iykwim.

sPORTyVolleyballOnBLACKSAND · 27/07/2012 16:40

You will become known as 'butterfly lady' in your social circles....small children may ask if you think you are one....

DorothyGherkins · 27/07/2012 16:41

Is it for fancy dress?

MadBusLady · 27/07/2012 16:42

Floaty hippy clothes don't suit me so I could be being harsh but gibbering fucksticks. I feel like it's bringing on the menopause just looking at it.

sPORTyVolleyballOnBLACKSAND · 27/07/2012 16:45

you will need some accessories

MadBusLady · 27/07/2012 16:45

On a more constructive note, suggesting something more classic is probably a good idea if you're already wondering where you could wear it. But depends on your relationship with MiL.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/07/2012 16:47

I think it's lovely but only if you're quite slim - I'd look like a butterfly decorated tent in it. Smile

imnotmymum · 27/07/2012 16:48

sPORT that so funny Grin

bigTillyMint · 27/07/2012 16:48

Interesting choice. Does she generally shop in Per Una? Hmm

newmum001 · 27/07/2012 16:50

Im not keen. Out of interest how much is it the price isn't coming up when i click the link.

Chewbecca · 27/07/2012 16:51

I really like it actually, I can imagine having a good dance in it and floating the cape bit!! Needs trying on though to check it is flattering. Also needs a special occasion too, sort of thing I'd perhaps like to wear at my 40th birthday party.

BunnyLebowski · 27/07/2012 16:54

Oh dear GOD my eyes

Sorry OP Grin

If it's any consolation your dress is the least hideous on the site?

lisaro · 27/07/2012 17:01

Oh sweet Jesus bunny did you have to do that just as I'm preparing food. I feel nauseous.
