MIL has offered to buy me this dress for Xmas!

She loves the label itself and thinks that it would suit me. I have a few reservations though (like the price for one, it's a very generous offer to say the least!)

Can I have some opinions on the dress itself please and also if you do like it where would you where it, what would you wear it with? I don't wear dresses very often and if I do it's more a dinner at Zizzi's occasion IYKWIM. I do think it's rather beautiful though.

(Last year she bought me a magazine subscription, I must have done something right!)

I quite like it - I think if you like it, would feel comfortable in it and know it would suit you, why not?

If I saw someone wearing that I would admire them for being a bit different and probably be a tiny bit Envy!

Are you an art teacher in a secondary school? If not, don't do it!

dexter73 · 27/07/2012 17:31

It's dry clean only which is a PITA.

KatieisScarlettinSpandex · 27/07/2012 17:33

It is horrible. When I opened the link my brain went "offorrfucckssake"

That is not good.

PuffPants · 27/07/2012 17:36

I would so rather have the cash!

droves · 27/07/2012 17:38

I used to wear a dress similar to that one, in 2005 when I was pg with twins.

If she buys you it , you must purchase the matching butterfly cushions.

Sorry, had a phone malfunction.

so general consensus is that it's hideous. If it's any help she is 65 & I am 25 and she loves loud clothes. I on the other hand am wearring a plain blue dress from White company which is pretty daring for me.

the cape kinda appeals to my theatricaal side though & I can imagine swishing it while I dance.

couuld do with £400 towards a car more though!

I do sort of like it & think it's very pretty but I just don't know when I would wear it. Also as someone said it is quite memorable and I have quite a limited social group so I probably would become known at the butterfly lady. which would secretly quite like

Don't let us put you off if you like it OP Smile.

But DO try it on before you commit. That label really doesn't look like it's cut for 25 year olds to me. Even if you think "Oh I'm hardly Kate Moss" (though maybe you are Grin) it's amazing what a difference there is in cut between older and younger labels. I don't think it'll go on like a Topshop dress, or even one of the more decent M&S dresses. Could be wrong.

SmilingandWaving · 27/07/2012 18:00

I will gently discourage her from buying it,I'll just tell her it's not really me as I don't want to hurt her feelings. It's a very generous offer & she genuinely loves their clothes.

I'd be more than happy wwith another magazine subscription!

Hell if you buy it, wear it in public and post a pic, we'll have a whip round for the cushions!!!!

MadBusLady · 27/07/2012 18:03

I could be totally wrong. About everything. It's been known.

Specialbrew · 27/07/2012 18:24

I have a Sarah Arnett dress (who is one of the designers for the label) that I got in Harvey Nichols a few years ago. It is distinctive, I probably wear it a couple of times a year, with skyscraper heels, but I love it. I don't think it's the type of style that would suit everyone though, so i'd suggest seeing if you could go somewhere to try it on. It's a lot of money for something you might not like when you try it on.

SmilingandWaving · 27/07/2012 18:36

I think when I say I like it I mean if I saw it on someone else I'd think it was llovely but I could never wear it as it's so different to my usual non existent style. I'd lovee the cusion though Grin

also I'm a size 16 which pprobably completely rules it out anyway as many people have said it probably only looks good on a certain body ttype.

I honestly think that dress would be very ageing on a 25 year old and it sounds as if you won't wear it that much. Is she easy to talk to?

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 27/07/2012 19:29

It looks very Goth to me. If you are into that sort of thing.

SmilingandWaving · 27/07/2012 19:50

She is lovely Levantine so I'm sure she won't mind at all. To be honest I'm a bit overwhelmed that she made such a generous offer. i don't want to hurt her feelings though so I won't be as harsh as some people have been!

ENormaSnob · 27/07/2012 20:05

You are 25?

I think your mil hates you Sad

nothinglefttolose · 27/07/2012 20:16

Erm there is a lot of volume to it.....

lisaro · 27/07/2012 20:25

Sorry OP, I'm mid 40's and still wouldn't touch it with yours................

Levantine · 27/07/2012 20:28

Well you could just say that lovely as it is you won't get much use from it with your work/lifestyle and that would be a shame - or summat

picnicbasketcase · 27/07/2012 20:30

Oooh, I don't like that. Your sleeves would be all trailing into your spaghetti.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 27/07/2012 20:33

No, sorry am 26 and can't imagine it on anyone my age. That is the stuff of cat lady art teachers 45+.
And it's a fucking rip off!

Redglow · 27/07/2012 20:48

Sorry it's awful.
