Shape wear - why are we being sucked back into girdles ?

I just think its against my religion.
Either lose some weight or buy something that fits ur suits.
I've flirted with large pants that give me an unattractive prosthetic air once , but then I think FFs I am not apologizing for myself, and leave at home.
On the other thread someone wears them to work !!
Isn't life tough enough without a corset ?

And to be bluntly honest. If ogre over a size 16 you're expecting miracles.

I wear one if I am going to a party and wearing a fitted dress, but wouldn't wear it all day. Gok even advises to wear them under jeans!!! Makes me feel hot and sweaty to think about it!

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 12/05/2012 14:38

It's not about weight loss though, the light control stuff just gives a smooth line if you're wearing a clingy dress.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 12/05/2012 14:39

In a word, Gok.

Catsmamma · 12/05/2012 14:39

That's a little ogre-ist isn't it?

I'd like a proper lace up corset, no idea when I'd wear it though.

trixymalixy · 12/05/2012 14:58

It's not about just losing weight when you have had kids though. Even my size 8 friends' stomachs have not gone back as flat as they were before kids. Shapewear just gives smoother lines.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 12/05/2012 15:06

Somehow I'm ignoring the ogre comment Hmm

It's about having a smoother line, imo. Even when I'm below the ogre mark, I have a flabby tummy, and it looks much better with a light control garment underneath a dress. It's not uncomfortable to me, and it looks much better on me, imo.

It's up there with bras. There's no law saying you need to wear one, but many of us find we look better with one than without. Some people disagree, and avoid wearing them when they can. shrug.

JustFab · 12/05/2012 15:07

Sounds like sour grapes because you got £10 to spend on the food.

tabulahrasa · 12/05/2012 15:14

I'm an ogre Hmm.

I occasionally wear shape wear because it's very very hard to find dresses especially that fit and suit me - it makes it a tiny bit easier to find something suitable if I can smooth out my wobbly bits a bit, they don't make things that are too small fit me, just stops things clinging quite as much were I don't want them too.

TitWillow · 12/05/2012 15:19

I'm thinking that ogre is a typo/autocorrect for you're

lumbago · 12/05/2012 15:24

For a better line under clothes. I personally prefer a smoother line and hate vpl! I find shapewear gives clothes a nicer look and wear it cos it makes me feel better and more confident and that is only a good thing.

FrancesFarmer · 12/05/2012 22:30

I would never wear the stuff. Horrible horrible horrible.

noddyholder · 12/05/2012 22:32

Looks terrible basically only looks acceptable on those who don,t need it! Better to wear well fitting normal stuff I havecalways been able to spot it a mile off as it makes anyone with a few lumps and bumps look worse.

gigglygirly · 13/05/2012 08:16

I would love a 50s type girdle or corset!

Still not going to fit into all those beautiful vintage dresses on eBay with their 22 inch waists!

Mrsrobertduvall · 13/05/2012 08:51

A good bra that fits properly makes you look slimmer automatically.

deliciousdevilwoman · 13/05/2012 09:34

Wow-judgmental much?!

I agree a good bra is mandatory. I wear lovely bras....but have worn some form of shapewear-Spanx/control knickers/corsets for 20+ years on an almost daily basis. I like the feeling of being "sucked in" and having a smoother line under clothes-even everyday clothes. The difference (for me) of wearing normal knickers under clothing is that my tummy and waist doesn't feel as tight and pulled in, or my hips as smooth.

I easily look a dress size smaller-and no, I am not deluding myself, when I wear it. If I have a night on the tiles/am wearing something particularly figure hugging, I have taken to wearing 2 pairs of Spanx-tis a sleb secret weapon apparantly. It works!

I guess, I am just so used to it, now. It doesn't feel odd or uncomfortable.

Arana · 13/05/2012 09:38

I'm size 10 and regularly wear shapewear. It gives me a smoother outline and doesn't make my stomach look as horrendous as it does au naturel.

I used to be size 18, and still have lots of spare skin. The shapewear helps to keep that in check.

SeasonOfTheWitch · 13/05/2012 11:02

hmm - I do see your point but I wear it occasionally to give a smooth line under some dresses - they fit fine and I don't need to lose weight but the outline of normal underwear looks pretty crap showing.

StellaAndFries · 13/05/2012 11:26

I wear shape wear regularly at least a couple of times a week, I find it gives me a smoother shape and makes my dresses hang better.

PeahenTailFeathers · 13/05/2012 11:35

I wore M&S fim control bodyshapers all the time before getting pregnant - they are actually really comfortable and look nice. They didn't really pull me in as much as they gave a smoother outline, but they're sold by bra size (mine was 38e) rather than clothes size (was 14) which might make a difference. I can't wait until I can wear them again.

startail · 13/05/2012 12:33

No no no!

I remember my mother's girdle!

Just no!

Shallishanti · 13/05/2012 13:14

I agree
I remember my mother's girdle ( she called it a 'roll on')
it's madness, and not like bras at all- I would be v uncomfortable without a bra (36F ish)
do you think men regularly worry about 'a smooth outline'??? it's oppression, it really is

AnnoyingOrange · 13/05/2012 13:29

I bought a body shaper slip to wear under a fitted dress.

Tried it on, couldn't bring myself to wear it

Stuffed it in a drawer and wore the dress without it

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:20

Agree. We shouldn't bloody buy into this crap
