I bloody love the MN haircut.

I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Oh my god! Can't believe I just did this - but it looks so much better than it did - amazing! I love MN. Not been here for a while - but this reminds me why MN is so great! Thanks

DonkeyTeapot · 12/02/2012 22:18

I still haven't plucked up the courage. We had PIL for dinner today so I didn't really want to attempt it in case I cocked it up.

I also have a little voice inside telling me this could all be an elaborate hoax.

I have had too much wine to do it tonight now, but I think tomorrow might be the day.

VagolaJahooli · 12/02/2012 22:18

I started cutting my hair this way two years ago also, I have not only saved a fortune, I have never been happier with my hair. I always get people commenting on it I'm happy wearing it up or down, I used to hate wearing it down as it always sat messy, thick and annoying. Now it has the best layers (something even the most rediculously expensive executive principle senior hairstylist could not do) & takes no time to do. If I'm about to go out and suddenly realise I need a haircut I just do it there and then fluff it up a bit and I'm off out.

Believe me if you are unsure if you should do it and are a little bit scared, don't be afraid you just do it.

Chubfuddler · 12/02/2012 22:21

It's not a hoax. I've genuinely done it. My hair isn't as long do the effect is not dramatic, it's just given me lots of nice layers through the front.

You need very sharp scissors - dressmaking scissors I used - and thd ponytail needs to be very neat. Hair very smooth and brush through thd ponytail before you snip

VagolaJahooli · 12/02/2012 22:22

Donkey it's not, do it! Oh but please wait until your sober.

catinboots · 12/02/2012 22:26

Don't do it

GeogGeek · 12/02/2012 22:27

Will add photo to my profile if I can work out how! I am currently gauging opinions from facebook!

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 22:30

I did it and am very happy!
But please please please don't do it till your sober, and don't rush it!
Good luck!

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 22:32

Oh, and don't be afraid to tweak it abit after!

notveryinventive · 12/02/2012 22:38

Im tweaking mine when my new scissors come. Def not a hoax. My theory is that its hair, it will grow back and if you mess it up there's always the hairdresser. I actually wonder how many short haired people happened to originally get short hair cos they fucked it up originally. Im not making myself clear there, so I hope YKWIM.

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 22:41

I know what you mean nitveryinventive its how I would have ended up had today gone wrong!

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 22:42

Shock sorry notveryinventive

Although strangely appropriate on a hair thread Hmm

MerryMarigold · 12/02/2012 22:43

Waving right back, Daisy me old china. Did you do it too?!!

I did it twice. First time it looked no different as I already had a layered cut. So second time I went a bit drastic adventurous, and it looks really great on the sides/ back, but the fringe is a a little too layered for my liking. Grows at a rate of knots ('scuse the pun) though, so it should all be perfect in a couple of weeks.

DonkeyTeapot · 12/02/2012 23:04

I will do it, but def not tonight! And if the strangers who are convincing me to do it in the first place say it's not a hoax, well, that's good enough for me! Grin

I don't know why I'm worrying really, my hair looks atrocious right now. It is very curly, but out of desperation I've been brushing it into a pony tail, which just separates all the curls out and makes it fuzzy instead. I need to do something that will make me not want to tie it back.

I might take before and after photographs, but put make up on for the second one, as if I've had a makeover!

mrsmartin · 12/02/2012 23:20

Well, I've read all of the tips with interest and fear and I have resolved to join the legion. Tomorrow I shall go and buy a new bottle of dye and then on Tuesday night I will do the deed (DH will be at work so if is a disaster he won't be able to laugh at me while I cry).

Eeekk - my hair is lovely...but not paying for hairdressers and not having to make conversation or endure a really shit scalp massage is too big a temptation!!!

LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2012 23:36

I did Merry :o
Mine was v short, and going out of an asymmetric crop thing. It's now a pretty passable layered chin length bob which will help with the growing out of my fringe!

LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2012 23:42

Not chin length at all really....it's about an inch below my ears!

CrystalTits · 12/02/2012 23:47

Catinboots I now look like Cadfael with a mullet.

Devora · 12/02/2012 23:52

OK, I'm signing up.

Will report back Grin

MeltedChocolate · 13/02/2012 01:06

Grr. Seriously why do people feel the need to post this shit?!

OP I do not want to have the same hair as everyone. I was very smug knowing I got great hair for no money. Stop spoiling it!

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/02/2012 07:15

I tried this a few years ago, but never managed to get anything off the length, and it got progressively more mullet-y. I eventually went to my hairdresser, who greeted me with "What the fuck have you been doing to your hair?" Grin

So if your hair is long, how do you lose the length at the back?

cornykabana · 13/02/2012 07:57

Why do people feel the need to on threads just to have a go?
Melted chocolate would you like some attention?

jan2011 · 13/02/2012 08:06

i am enjoying this thread too its been fun reading it..ive needed the laughs lately. i am going to announce sometime to my dh that im going to cut my own hair and can't wait to see his response (coming from someone who has switched hairdressers loads of times and has just found a good one and has finally quit complaining) i am due the hairdresser anyway so if it doesn't work out....

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/02/2012 08:27

I get my mum to cut the back. I'm a MN haircut veteran but I can't get the back of mine shorter. I'm sure there's a way of doing it myself but I haven't researched it yet.

AllPastYears · 13/02/2012 08:29

Yeah, overall length is a problem. The front looked great but I tried a pony tail at the nape (as suggested in a couple of posts) to get something off the length - bottom layers were just too long and droopy. So now the bottom is rather ragged looking and, as you'd expect, shorter at the back, which I didn't really want. Hmm, may have to get DH to tidy it up for me.
