I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

I just did it on unruly frizzy curly hair. I did the unicorn then an inch of at the back via a ponytail, so its a hybrid!!!

Thank you!!! Picture on profile.

Will update picture when I wash and let hair dry naturally and curly.

lucjam · 12/02/2012 14:28

So it definitely seems that I am the only twat that can't do it properly then! Pah!

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 14:40

Ok its done. Had to do it a few times though. Reckon I've taken a few inches off...and I've done my fringe!
Will have to get dh to check the back though when he gets home, its quite tricky trying to get that straight. Confused

All in all, not to bad, defiantly looks better and I have saved myself £40 next monday :)

bebejones · 12/02/2012 14:49

Went to Tesco earlier & found myself trying to spot any MN haircuts! I will never look at layered hairdos again without wondering!! :o

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 14:49

Pic on profile for a limited time coz its a bloody awful pic!

QuinnFabray · 12/02/2012 14:50

How do you do it on shorter hair then? Mine is a couple of inches below my chin, with a few layers in already. Specific instructions please, I'm an idiot.

catinboots · 12/02/2012 14:53

Uh oh......

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 14:57

Oh no....catinboots ????

TheScarlettPimpernel · 12/02/2012 14:59

Sparky that looks lovely!

Cat, what's happened?!

DamnDeDoubtance · 12/02/2012 15:16

Just did it on DD. She has really long thick hair.

She is delighted as she now thinks she looks like a moxie girl!

HillyWallaby · 12/02/2012 15:33

what's a moxie girl? Confused

NickNacks · 12/02/2012 15:35

God I'm so tempted but have you all waited until you can afford a trip to the hairdressers in case it goes wrong? Because I'll have to wait for next month if so....

mad4 · 12/02/2012 15:42

oh i so want to do it!!!!

but i can only find pics of this done with long hair, mine is not quite at my shoulder and so would not all go up into a front ponytail?

do i just do the front ponytail with what will go up? will that just give me layers around the front?

or will it all go terribly wrong...someone with shorter hair who has tried this, please reassure me...

Chubfuddler · 12/02/2012 15:46

My hair is between chin and shoulder. I did it by putting the front 2/3 of my hair in a pony tail at the very front. I didn't cut it as short as he did on the clip do I don't ave a fringe, just lots of layers through the front. Not really lost any length as such even though it looked like I'd hacked off loads before I took out the pony tail.

mad4 · 12/02/2012 15:48

ahh thanks chub and it looks ok on bob length hair?

sounds like you managed the end result i want, can you post a pic?

Chubfuddler · 12/02/2012 15:52

On here? You must be joking. Honestly it will be fine, just cut the pony tail a couple of inches longer than on the clip and you'll have layers but no fringe.

sonicrainboom · 12/02/2012 16:21

Thanks to this thread, I just went from super long hair to bob. Love it!...though it's v. uneven in the back. What to do? Go to an hairdresser anyway?

DamnDeDoubtance · 12/02/2012 16:23

I pulled it into a tight pony at the back and evened it out.

You could get someone to do this for you.

maybetoday · 12/02/2012 16:38

Very impressed with you all!
My hair's too short to try it, but thinking of trying to cut my 2.5DD's... She's never had her hair cut and it's starting to look a bit straggly. Not sure if she'll keep still enough though. She loves her long hair and I'm being a wimp about taking her to the hairdressers. Any tips?

oldsilver · 12/02/2012 16:45

Okay dokey - yesterday I tried and it wasn't horrendously bad, but not good. Tried again today with wet hair and did the unicorn in the middle instead of at the side - even though I have a parting. Spent ages and ages combing it into the pony just to make sure.

Turned out fab Grin add me to the list Smile

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 12/02/2012 16:47

wow sparky - is the top pic the haircut? That's stunning!

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 16:50

Yes its the top pic.
Thanks Blush

SparkySparrow · 12/02/2012 16:53

sonicrainboom Can you get someone just to even it out for you at the back?
seems like such a waste to go to the hairdressers after all your hard work ! Plus it kind of defeats the object! Grin

FoofFighter · 12/02/2012 17:04

Loving the pics so far, you all look great :)

For those without long long hair, mine is between chins and shoulders and I just put up what will go up and cut that as if it won't go up chances are it doesn't need a trim anyway?

I'd second getting a friend to even up the back as it is tricky doing a back ponytail cut evenly, not imposible though and you really do get better with practise :)
