what does it actually smell like?
is it worth the price tag?

What does that Pehaligon's Lily & spice actually smell like?

LoveInASnowyClimate · 29/12/2011 18:33

Gerri - it does smell just like lilies and "warm" spices (possibly sandalwood like smell?). I love it but it is quite lily-y if you don't like lilies!

polyhymnia · 29/12/2011 18:44

Absolutely hate it - and I'm 'old'. Too powdery cloying sweet strong. But then I hate all sweet scents and only really like Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien and a very few other perfumes.

GeriManda · 29/12/2011 18:53

Thanks Love. What about the Artemesia? I'm looking on Basenotes for reviews but, really, you have to try them, I know.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 29/12/2011 19:02

Haven't tried Artemesia but also have never found a Penhaligans' scent which doesn't smell good! Sorry not to be more help.

GeriManda · 29/12/2011 19:03

Oh, thanks. Won't harm to order a 15ml totally unneeded bottle, will it?

LoveInASnowyClimate · 29/12/2011 19:53

It would be quite wrong to do anything else! Hope you like it.

warmandwooly · 29/12/2011 21:32

Too strong for me. I have a bottle of Coco Mademoiselle eau de perfume which I do like. Have been wearing loads of Balenciaga perfume lately. If you are looking for a different smell try that. I bought the original last year and got a small bottle of the perfume (I think its either perfume of eau de perfume). Also have Prada and poeme by lancome which reminds me of my youth. Also have a MJ Daisy necklace which I also like(solid perfume).

motherinferior · 29/12/2011 21:38

My mate works at Penhaligon's and gets a discount Grin. God I love their stuff.

Chubfuddler · 29/12/2011 21:46

I have worn no 5 for about ten years and I am only 32. I hate chance though, smells boak on me. Interesting to see so many Chanel fans also like penhaligons, Dh bought me artemisia ages ago and I haven't really worn it. Will give it a go.

During the day I wear Ralph Lauren romance.

Fregley · 30/12/2011 09:35

i went and tried the chance green on the basis of this thread
i likey
but hten i also like eau dynamisante and that in my head is green

chipstick10 · 30/12/2011 10:07

I wear Colonia Essenza. I know its prob aimed at men but i love it. I would love to smell fracus does anyone know what it smells like, ive never seen it on display

polyhymnia · 30/12/2011 10:40

Fracas is so sweet it makes me feel sick. But then my tastes are very citrus and green. Would prefer Eau Dynamisante any day!

Not a lover of Penhaligon - also too sweet, though beautifully packaged. Someone gave me a selecction of theirs a couple of Christmases ago and I didn't like any but luckily found a friend who did and was able to pass on.

Perfume is such a personal thing.

chipstick10 · 30/12/2011 14:18

Thanks polyhymnia Yuk i hate sweet. I used to wear lime basil and mand from Jo malone but it just doesnt last. I only mentioned fracus because it always crops up in jilly cooper novels.

Meglet · 30/12/2011 14:25

I've worn Angel since it came out (and had No.5 as back up) but I've grown out of it now.

Tom Ford Black Orchid is my new drug of choice. Stupidly expensive, but I did get the tiny bottle for Xmas which I shall use sparingly.

santaspunk · 30/12/2011 16:26

well this is a revelation!

I am an old time addict of No19 (20+ years). Recently been 'working' with No5 to see if I can get on with it. I do prefer the premiere but no bath products yet.

I had no idea that 19 was so popular! P'raps someone can tell chanel that and widen their range of products which has shrunk significantly in the few years!

santaspunk · 30/12/2011 16:28

yeah i like penhaligons too! Esp Lily and spice.

ReshapeWhileDashingThroTheSnow · 30/12/2011 17:36

Another Penhaligon fan here! Grin I can't afford it though (unless on ebay). Love Bluebell, and also their Lily of the Valley, though Diorissimo remains the best lily of the valley scent for me, and I always have some of that. But Penhaligon never lasts long on my skin - maybe an hour tops? Sad Anyone else find that? (I'm using eau de toilette.)

I'm a fan of old Guerlain scents, like Apres L'Ondee and L'Heure Bleu. Also v v expensive and hardly ever come up on ebay. Sad

Plum by Mary Greenwell is lovely. Very grown up.

I love Angel, although it's rather chavvy isn't it? Hate Alien, smells like toilet water to me, although not entirely convinced the sample I got from eBay is legit.

Chanel No 5 doesn't suit everyone admittedly as it's quite heavy but I have worn it since I was 14 (I was never like all the kids in my class....:)). The thing I loved about it is that is the smell kind of evolves during the day - so if you spray it on yourself and hate it, just give it an hour or so and you may love it. My favourite perfume of all time!

DonaAna · 31/12/2011 13:36

Whoever mentioned Chanel's Coromandel, a massive thank you. I sought it out, tried it on a purchased a bottle yesterday. Haven't possibly ever found a perfume I like as much. Much more unique and well-crafted than Coco M and wearable every day (at least in winter).

Eyeing Cuir de Russie next. Quite like it, but there is something almost nauseatingly soft about it, so need to test and retest on my skin to find out whether it works for me.

BTW, if you want to like Chanel 5 but don't, quite, the Chanel shop ladies suggested trying No. 22 and Bois des Iles instead.
