what does it actually smell like?
is it worth the price tag?

I also wore Pleasures throughout university & my early twenties.

Now I love Chanel mademoiselle, kenzo flower & Marc Jacobs Daisy. I have just been given a pretty givenchy one too but can't remember which.

Haberdashery · 26/12/2011 21:57

I love Chanel No 5, but it is quite different from a lot of modern perfumes. It doesn't have the powdery sweet undertones that are very common at the moment. It's very floral, but heavy floral not light. I also loathe Angel and like Pleasures - I think Pleasures may have a lot of the same top notes but No 5 is a lot more robust and grown up, IMO. I mean grown up in a good way, btw.

BarryManilowsWardrobe · 26/12/2011 22:01

I love it. And I'm young.
I also wear Lola by Marc Jacobs, Coco by Chanel, Addict by Christian Dior, Burberry Weekend, Hugo Boss Intense and Deep Red.

Santasjollys · 26/12/2011 22:04

I'm really not keen on it personally. I love Coco though, never wear anything else.

underactivethyroidmum · 26/12/2011 22:06

Yep I'm another No 5 fan and I too love Dior Addict, along with DKNY Be Delicious Gold, Chanel Chance, Coco and Coco mademoiselle.

I think it depends on your personality and style which perfume suits you. I have a friend who suits pretty floral clothes and perfume to match and another who is quirky in both her dress and personality and she has been known to wear aftershave !!!

MrsSnow · 26/12/2011 22:07

I adore Chanel No 5, I also adore Chanel Chance and I'm 35. Not sure what that says about me!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 26/12/2011 22:09

Its ok, none taken. I have worn Angel on and off for years. It smells different on me to lots of other people. I have friends who like it on me, try it on themselves, it smells like cat pee and they have to go scrub it off!

I also have Marc Jacobs Daisy, DKNY, Ghost, JPG classique - actually i have lots of perfumes. Blush I wear different ones at different times of year and for day/evening.

trixymalixy · 26/12/2011 22:12

Angel is the Marmite of perfumes!! I loathe it too

BastedTurkey · 26/12/2011 22:13

I always think of it as an old lady perfume as all the people that I know who wear it are 60+, so I am surprised how many MNers wear it.

Chanel no 19 much much nicer IMO

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/12/2011 22:13

well i think im just going to go and try it out, leave it for an hour and then go back if i like it.

i suppose lots of perfumes smell quite different depending who is wearing them! Smile

yes, definitely try it. I might try it again too

ZZZenAgain · 26/12/2011 22:19

last time I was thinking of buying it, I ended up with CK Contradiction which is a totally different scent. Mind you that was about 11 years ago.

emsyj · 26/12/2011 22:22

That is true - my sister wears Beautiful and I love it on her but it smells horrible on me -really sickly and chemical-y. On her it is just fresh and floral and gorgeous. My mum always hated Dune til she smelled it on me, she loves it on me but it doesn't smell right on her at all. And she can wear White Linen and it smells like fresh White linen, but it is totally cat pissy on me...

ripitupandstartagain · 26/12/2011 22:44

IME if it is of any interest men like Chanel No. 5 more than women. It is a 'grown up' woman's scent.
Try it, but also try Chanel No. 5 Eau Premire - an update which is more modern but also lovely.

nkf · 26/12/2011 22:51

It's a great perfume. One of the greats but it's not an easy wear. Most perfumes these days are light and fresh and sort of pretty pretty. This one is grown up and complex. But it's a beauty.

lurkinginthebackground · 26/12/2011 23:05

It brings back memories of a childhood friend. I got reading for a night out at hers once and we both wore it.
It is more grown up and knowing than a lot of modern perfumes. I also like Chance.

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/12/2011 23:05

well now i am curious enough to seek it out to at least try it...i am sure the counter assistant will advise me if i am not suited...and i know what i like perfume wise.

if its not for me i wont get it. ill look for something else....am just determined to get proper perfume rather than toilet water!

I have a friend who wears Chanel No5. smells lovely on her, and when I smell it anywhere it reminds me of her.

My Mum wears coco chanel and it is lovely on her, but its 'her' smell.

hmm maybe I should try the Chanel 19 on and see how it smells on me...

gregssausageroll · 27/12/2011 07:39

Another lover here. I have worn it for years. I keep trying others but keep coming back to it. It is very distinctive.

nannyj · 27/12/2011 07:46

I love Hermes Fauberg 24.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 27/12/2011 08:16

I used to wear it when I was very young (18) I really hate it now though.

I recent discovered some fairly full bottles at the back of a drawer along with the discontinued talc, sold it all for a small fortune on e-bayGrin

anniewoo · 27/12/2011 10:48

Chanel No. 5 ok. Why do u want to smell like so many other people though. Creed Virgin Island Water sooo lovely. So expensive tho.Hate Angel - migraine inducing. Don't like Coco or Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir. Guess i just don't like heavy scents.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 27/12/2011 11:07

Chanel No 5 is lovely but is v different from Coco Madamoiselle.

Now, if anyone wants a gift set of Marc Jacobs Lola, PM me and you can have it for the postage. Grin

MadameOvary · 27/12/2011 11:08

Why not try perfume houses like Creed or Annick Goutal? Not so easy to get hold of, though.

DonaAna · 27/12/2011 11:12

Very soapy. Old lady. Wait until you are 70. (I'm a fan of many Chanel perfumes but am not mature enough to wear #5. Coco Mademoiselle and Coco I love.)
