I think maybe the Austrian born Hedy Lamarr . You can't see in these black and white shots that she has green eyes but the contrast green eyes, black hair I think is lovely. Also despite the heavy dark lipstick they wore in those days I think there is something quite modern and natural about her, more so when she moves than in still shots.

So: whose look do you like? Link to a photo you like of that person.

It's a toss-up between Ava Gardner and Ingrid Bergman.

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:20

totally different look those two

stunning

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/07/2011 22:24

Hedy Lamarr was stunning... As was Merle Oberon.

The film star I think most beautiful was Marilyn Monroe. She was just luminous. <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=3.bp.blogspot.com/_4U5higPb4w0/Re7Leip0j4I/AAAAAAAAAAM/s4rDXS5y6lk/s320/Marilyn%2BMonroe.jpg&imgrefurl=bennyisnotmyname.blogspot.com/2007/03/important-woman.html&usg=__9-wj96LhrEsBF5RA0obMoV_teiM=&h=251&w=220&sz=18&hl=en&start=62&zoom=1&tbnid=zldWfJnqANIAEM:&tbnh=109&tbnw=96&ei=R2kbTsCMCI6w8QPkh8H7Dw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmarilyn%2Bmonroe%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7SMSN_enGB325%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D431%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=235&page=6&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:62&tx=65&ty=63" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">This picture was taken on the set of her last, unfinished, film.

I like the photos that are less staged/obvious. She was a very complex woman and, despite her image, was one of the first women to have her own production company and to fight back against Hollywood "system".

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/07/2011 22:25

Ava Gardner - also stunning. Now, I'd be very happy to look like that!

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:33

So so many.

Monroe obviously, Louise Brooks, Rita Hayworth, Pola Negri, Gene Tierney.. I can't pick just one!

CaveMum · 11/07/2011 22:35

The National Portrait Gallery has an exhibition of old Hollywood photos on at the moment called Glamour of the Gods.

The BBC had some of the photos up lady week: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-14032484

Elizabeth Taylor, Vivian Leigh et al. So very very Envy

CaveMum · 11/07/2011 22:36

Sorry, that link should be here

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:36

I should be going to see that with DH for our wedding anniversary Grin

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:38

what about the cool blonde types? I also like their elegant, controlled look but I think a bit less

Grace Kelly

Tippi Hedren

Catherine Deneuve is another cool blonde but too cool for me. Of course she is beautiful but I always found something strange in the detached manner of her acting

Awomancalledhorse · 11/07/2011 22:38

Linda Darnell!
Empusa has good taste in well styled ladyfolk.

mo3d · 11/07/2011 22:40

Aubrey Hepburn

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:42

I'm ever so slightly obsessed with the 20's through to 50's. Blush

Watched Gilda the other day, I could spend all day watching old films!

Nastassja Kinski

Enraha · 11/07/2011 22:43

Lauren Bacall. Great trousers!

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:44

I'm a 20s early 30s freak. Love the whole style - cars, furniture, clothes. Only thing I really don't like is that fashion they had of putting lipstick on only a part of your mouth so it looks a bit like a bird's beak. Not sure if anyone knows what I mean...

OP posts:
Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:45

Very true, I don't think I've ever seen anyone make trousers look as glamorous as Bacall did!

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:46

I really like Lauren Bacall, she seems such a good sort but I don't think I personally find her really beautiful. Elisabeth Taylor when she was young. She was stunning already in National Velvet with those amazing eyes. Even more so than Vivien Leigh I thought.

dh really likes Gina Lolabrigida

KaraToytown · 11/07/2011 22:49

Can't do a link from Ipod but I vote for Cyd Charisse. Stunningly beautiful woman.

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:50

zzenagain I love that way of wear lipstick. But then it actually suits me, so I'm biased.

I assume you mean like the always wonderful Clara Bow?

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:52
