I think maybe the Austrian born Hedy Lamarr . You can't see in these black and white shots that she has green eyes but the contrast green eyes, black hair I think is lovely. Also despite the heavy dark lipstick they wore in those days I think there is something quite modern and natural about her, more so when she moves than in still shots.

So: whose look do you like? Link to a photo you like of that person.

Ava Gardner for me

I'd give my eye teeth to look like her

I read her biography- she was a wildcat too

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:53

ooh Cyd Charisse is stunning!

CybilLiberty · 11/07/2011 22:53

I've been told I resembled Jane Russell as a teenager! (not in the boob dept)

Empusa · 11/07/2011 22:53

Now I'm jealous!

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 22:55

this kind of thing

pictures not so great but here what they call the "cupid's bow". Have seen it much more exaggerated , just very centre of the mouth has lipstick on it and then rounded higher above and below than the natural mouth

Jane Russel and Ava Gardner have such a mature somehow kind of grown-up look which I don't believe I will ever get. Can't quite explain it but if you contrast that with say someone like Audrey Hepburn who looks dainty and cute and somehow more like a girl...

Audrey Hepburn has amazing huge eyes and I like the whole sleek look

Ah yes, that's what I used to do. The cupid's bow ('scuse the rough looking picture)

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 23:05

is that you?

Empusa · 11/07/2011 23:10

Yep, that's me. A good few years ago now. I went through a real 20's phase. Frazzled my hair from all the waves!

Empusa · 11/07/2011 23:11

Oh how did I forget Lillian Gish?!

Columbia999 · 11/07/2011 23:16

Oh bum, my link didn't work!

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 23:24

I might get a bob again. But somehow a fluffy bob I think

Empusa · 11/07/2011 23:25

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/07/2011 23:39

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/07/2011 23:40

(that was julie christie btw)

mathanxiety · 11/07/2011 23:44

Katharine Hepburn.
Cyd Charisse.
Ginger Rogers.
(Plus Charisse and Rogers could dance).

Also, Mia Farrow , Romy Schneider , Charlotte Rampling and Brigitte Bardot -- maybe not the 'classic Hollywood' look though.

I agree about the 30s lipstick. Snow White (Disney cartoon) has the same sort of mouth.

ZZZenAgain · 11/07/2011 23:54

I wonder how much of a role elegance played in the whole look. They were very elegant stars of the 1920s-50s, weren't they?

Brigitte Bardot is very different to earlier filmstars. Different era altogether a different look - sort of disheveled and things coming undone - and of course beautiful with it.

I think the 'look' was linked to the times and perceptions of women/femininity during the era, most definitely.

mathanxiety · 12/07/2011 01:05

Alida Valli from 'The Third Man' also had quite a modern and natural look.

DancingWind · 12/07/2011 04:58

I think Vivien Leigh was gorgeous. As far as style goes-I love Marylin Monroe's red lips, Audrey Hepburn's givenchy black dress, Elizabeth Taylor's diamonds......different stars started different trends.
From the newer ones, I like Penelope Cruz.

dementedma · 12/07/2011 06:15

Audrey Hepburn gets my vote

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 12/07/2011 06:22

Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly for me.
although I do think that the young Liz Taylor was absolutely gorgeous as well.

newer - my favourites at the moment are Katherine Heigl and Thandie Newton

worldgonecrazy · 12/07/2011 08:41

Audrey Hepburn, not only beautiful on the outside, but a beautiful person inside. A true heroine and a perfect role model.
