I think maybe the Austrian born Hedy Lamarr . You can't see in these black and white shots that she has green eyes but the contrast green eyes, black hair I think is lovely. Also despite the heavy dark lipstick they wore in those days I think there is something quite modern and natural about her, more so when she moves than in still shots.

So: whose look do you like? Link to a photo you like of that person.

I was smitten with <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.livincool.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/adjani_ouverture1_reference-610x422.jpg&imgrefurl=www.livincool.com/cinema/isabelle-adjani&usg=__6e7hTAFgMTS7ulyWoKbtgvRNiY0=&h=422&w=610&sz=50&hl=en&start=20&zoom=1&tbnid=xKSaoWeAS9ZzUM:&tbnh=121&tbnw=161&ei=YfsbTtu7PNC28QOmytiuCA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Disabelle%2Badjani%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1085%26bih%3D580%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=130&vpy=117&dur=231&hovh=187&hovw=270&tx=176&ty=91&page=2&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Isabelle Adjani after watching La Reine Margot - she is luminous onscreen in a way that doesn't quite come across in photographs. Also just realised how much she looks like Kate Bush (my personal hero).

Lipstickgal · 12/07/2011 10:08

Jean Seberg, Breathless era.

BulletWithAName · 12/07/2011 10:36

Elizabeth Taylor. Just breathtakingly, timelessly beautiful.

mittenkitten · 12/07/2011 16:13

Natalie Wood was teh hotness.

kerstina · 12/07/2011 18:24

Brooke Shields in blue lagoon is probably the most beautiful but there are a lot of actresses who the camera seems to love and you cant take your eyes off them I would say Brigette Bardot, Natasha Kinksky,Penelope Cruz,Kiera Knightley .

DonaAna · 12/07/2011 19:28

Second Audrey. From stars my age, Gwyneth. Different, but both have found what works for them.

richpickings · 12/07/2011 19:47

Vivien Leigh looked amazing. In GWTW she had such beauty and attitute.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeene · 12/07/2011 19:53

Sophia Loren
Brigitte Bardot
Jane Birkin
Jane Asher (in the 60s)

mathanxiety · 12/07/2011 20:04

Isabelle Huppert is a more modern actress who has much old fashioned glam about her.

said · 12/07/2011 20:14

Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde was luminous. Looks weird now, sadly

MadameCastafiore · 12/07/2011 20:17

Audrey Tatou she is sophistication and beuty personified.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/07/2011 20:27

Audrey Hepburn. I love her.
She always looked utterly wonderful.
My wedding outfit was based on her but in ivory rather than black.

IHeartIona · 12/07/2011 20:33

I recently saw a photo of Barbara Stanwyck who I think also has one of those starlet looks

BambinoBoo · 12/07/2011 20:39

Isabella Rosselini Envy.

Jux · 12/07/2011 20:55

Audrey Hepburn. She was still amazingly beautiful in her 80s, too. Stunning woman.

garlicnutter · 12/07/2011 21:01

Oh, oh, mine are all blondes - as am I, albeit the saggy and menopausal variety.

No, they're not all blondes! Elizabeth Taylor, Tippi Hedren and Uma Thurman absolutely mesmerise me.
The blondes:
Lauren Bacall - I tried to 'be' her for ages. She even looked great at 85.
Mae West - sex symbol, comic genius, feminist, engineer, physicist and charitable activist.
Another really bright, strong & influential beauty, Jane Fonda, also looking great at 70.
Brigitte Bardot and I loved the way her character showed up more as the beauty faded.
I think I'm in love with Michelle Pfeiffer ...
... or maybe Helen Hunt
... Jodie Foster
... or Patsy Kensit.
But apparently I remind people of Goldie Hawn. I think it's the comedy face!

lucykate · 12/07/2011 21:02

the old hollywood actresses were totally in a different league to now, although i do think rachel mcadams is very pretty.

CaveMum · 12/07/2011 21:35

There's a programme on BBC4 tonight at 10pm looking at how the American film industry changed British culture in the 20s and 30sz

boogiewoogie · 12/07/2011 21:42

Predictable but Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Bit of trivia about Grace Kelly, she has the "geometrically perfect" face as her facial features match the golden ratio.

Ingrid Bergman/ Isabella Rosellini

Nastassia Kinski (who bears a striking resemblance to Ingrid Bergman and Isabella Rosellini)

More recently: Eva Green - Very enigmatic, those eyes.., Natalie Portman
Selma Blair - Not a great fan of her as an actress but she always manages to look good in anything, especially on the red carpet.

TantePiste · 12/07/2011 22:57

For different reasons, the stars/looks I appreciate the most are Audrey Hepburn, and Barbara Stanwyck. It wasn't just their looks, or sense of style, but the whole way they were as people - a whole presence. Both of them had a style of being that is intoxicating and lovable, though they are very different from each other. However, I also choose both of them for their style too. BS was crackling with physicality but also pulled together, feminine and authoritative too, and AH -what more can one say?

For sheer beautifulness - Ava Gardner, Sophia Lauren, Hedy Lamarr, Bridgitte Bardot. And the funny thing about Marilyn Monroe is that, when I look at her - I don't see exactly how it happens but she is just totally beautiful - but when you look at her features they are pretty but they are not super sculpted. It is not any one thing, but it all adds up to amazingness.

Can't think of a modern style favorite. I think the ladies of Bollywood seem to really be the modern equivalents for beauty of the old hollywood sirens.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 13/07/2011 02:26

I'm quite keen on Selena Gomez as an up-and-coming - she's beautiful but not overdone, and she has a fabulous smile.

Perhaps many of today's stars are too skinny? A lot of the olden-time stars were of course bigger, had a little more flesh on them (including their faces) which may be subconsciously more attractive? Just a thought. Except Audrey Hepburn of course - oops! bang goes that theory then!

TillyIpswitch · 13/07/2011 02:36

Vivien Leigh for me - just stunning. You could grate carrots on those cheekbones.

Jane Russell as well - another brunette with chiselled features.

As for blondes, I agree - you just can't go past Marilyn. She is exquisite. And anyone that can wear fur and still look beautiful (i.e. not like a middle-aged New York dame) is just remarkable.

As for modern day beauties - very much agree with TantePiste and am surprised no-one has mentioned Aishwarya Rai - breathtakingly beautiful. I would give my right kidney to look like that.

TillyIpswitch · 13/07/2011 02:46

I don't know about that necessarily, Thumbs - when you look at full length body shots of a lot of these women, they are so, so slim. As we all know, if you try to get into a (UK) size 10 dress from that era, you'll need to be a (UK) size 6 at the absolute most.

I realise a lot of women then wore corsets, but even so - their waists are tiny - much smaller than you'd come across now. Plus - look at that shot of Vivien Leigh that I posted. Look at the width of her shoulders and her upper arm. Very, very slim.

I mean, everyone goes on about how Marilyn was a size 16, but that's bollocks. She certainly wasn't a current, UK size 16. If anything, she would have been a US size 16, so a UK size 12, which in itself is absolutely no reflection of a size 12 from all those years ago - much more like a size 8.

They were just much more shapely - hourglass figures and tiny waists, accentuated by corsetry, but still very slim indeed. Although yes, I would perhaps agree that the hourglass figure is maybe subconsciously more attractive.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 13/07/2011 02:47

oo yes, she's rather lovely, isn't she? Aishwarya Raj, that is - fabulous eyes!

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 13/07/2011 02:54

I think you may have overstated what I meant, tilly - I didn't mean they were plump, just that they had a little more flesh on their bones (and yes, hourglass figures helped) than the stick insects that some of the current stars are. Keira Knightley being an example - coathanger shoulders (or they would be if she ever held them straight!)

But essentially I agree with you - the hourglass figure is maybe more subconsciously attractive and it is apparently being lost, for whatever reason, and being replaced by the ironing board figure (with or without boobs!)

Current UK size 16 is huge in comparison with what it was back when I were a lass - back then, a size 12 waist was 26", so a 16 would have been a 30" waist. I currently have a 32" waist, and still fit into M&S size 12s!! Shock but that's a whole other thread Grin
