If white linen trousers are a sartorial summer disaster...

....what casual trousers should we be wearing this summer?

Anything that doesn't show your knickers, cellulite and preferred style of fanjo topiary would be a start!!

Palazzo pants? Is that the right word? Those loose, wafty trousers. Or a trouser in a jeans cut but lighter material? Or a skirt or dress with leggings?

cybbo · 13/04/2011 09:44

tapered trews

cabbageroses · 13/04/2011 09:46

I do not possess any white linen trews but always think they look nice on other people when teamed with a nice kaftany tunic type top which comes mid thigh- hence hiding thongs, knickers and topiary. No?

worst case I saw was a woman in Waitrose- god forbid- pushing a trolley ,sticking out her large white linen clad bum, blue thong peeping over the top, and big cheeks wobbling all over.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 13/04/2011 09:50

In Waitrose? Blimey.

Thanks, some good ideas here. Though tapered trousers - shudder - probably not if one is {significantly} bigger than a size 8....

cybbo · 13/04/2011 09:51

Ahem I am a size 14 and I find them great

Ephiny · 13/04/2011 10:12

I shudder at the thought of wearing tapered trousers too. I think it depends on your shape, not just your size, I'm a size 10 but somewhat pear-shaped and they would be very unflattering on me. I'm sticking to bootcut/wide-leg and I don't care what anyone says.

What about linen trousers that aren't white? I've got a nice pair in brown from Next, they're light and comfortable and quite flattering IMO. I would feel a bit self-conscious in white ones, unless worn with a very long top...

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 13/04/2011 10:58

Yes, if you're straight up and down you should be ok. Pear shaped or hourglass - not flattering IMO.

I did have some nice linen trousers in beige which were smart enough for work - a few years ago - Hobbs I think.

I'm a 14/16 and VERY pear (also very long), and I have some slightly tapered chinos which I love (from Next of all places) and am convinced are surprisingly flattering

crucially they don't have pleats at the waist!

cybbo · 13/04/2011 12:09

how tall are you aquavit? I think you and I might be similar builds as I ahve 2 great pairs from new Look last year (which are slightly more snug round waistline this year)

higgle · 13/04/2011 12:32

Every Summer before now I have like linen trousers, but this year something is saying "no" to me. Probably because I've seen too many slightly overweight women with droopy arses in them. I have one taupe pair that are heavier weight I will give a final reprise this time round.

otchayaniye · 13/04/2011 12:45

dresses

aquavit · 13/04/2011 13:13

yes cyb I think we are a similar shape

I'm 5'10 size 14/16 big arse (well formed though) no boobs (well actually I do have boobs right now but only because pg)

but I have dainty feet

Shhhh · 13/04/2011 13:53

what is wrong with linen trousers..?

Why all of a sudden are they a no no on mn Hmm..?

cabbageroses · 13/04/2011 14:05

well I have got a new pair of line trews from Kew. they are dark grey and are smartish.

I also have a pair of tropical wool trews from Jigsaw that are dark grey and are wool and silk- but very light weight. I love them and they cost a lot.

foundwanting · 13/04/2011 14:06

I trawled the high street yesterday for flat-front, tapered trews. I must have tried on 20 pairs. Found the best fit and length for me in H&M in the end, and only £15. Grin

Just out of interest, does anyone fit Zara trousers? They were quite bizarre.

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:09

oh linen trousers, nice and baggy, don't worry about the rest, tis all just waffle

OeufaBrain · 13/04/2011 14:09

are stoney/creamy white linens ok?

I am 40, flabby and no idea what I am supposed to be wearing these dyas...

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:14

oefa yes they are, they are perfect

or white with a nice beige stripe

nice blue and white stripey top or white long sleeve vest

take me home Grin

Shhhh · 13/04/2011 14:15

mn is bizarre sometimes..Confused

Last year everyone raved about linen trousers.. this yr its changed..Hmm.

Wear what you like and feel comfy in !

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:15

tapered trews horrid, capri horrid especialy for fat calves

we are grown ups and long linen trousers, well made, are smashing

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:15

skinny jeans AWFUL by the way

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:16

and jeggings

Gooseberrybushes · 13/04/2011 14:16

and leggings under dresses

OeufaBrain · 13/04/2011 14:20

I have to admit, I don't like stripes with white linen trews (sorry)
Makes me think of middle-aged women on cruise ships, all navy and white with a jaunty scarf and too much gilt.

aquavit · 13/04/2011 14:35

lol Oeufa - gilt rope decoration is my favourite element of that particular 'style'

I do actually still like well-cut wide-leg linen trews but there are so many pitfalls, esp because linen loses its shape so readily
