so I had mine 'done' today and my hair is all shiny, silky, straight and non frizzy. It is lovely.

The salon suggested that I use Johnsons Baby Shampoo to wash my hair with and sold me a large bottle of Fudge conditioner, which I think was a bit of a con, but bought it anyway.

So what is it that I should be using to keep this look and shouldnt be using? I have 3 days until I can wash my hair to get this sorted out.

I had mine done about 6 weeks ago - still looking sleek and shiny!

My hairdresser told me to use a salt free shampoo - if you check the back of the bottles you'll be surprised at just how many have a high salt content!

Anyway I bought a TIGI shampoo from her - £11 but seems to be lasting ages. She said I could use any conditioner.

bugger, I thought I could use any conditioner. hmmf. oh well, I wont be buying conditioner in the next year or so!

so it is salt free I need, not sulphate/ide free?

Jax - you misread me! You CAN use any conditioner - just need to use the sulphate/salt free shampoo

I bought a massive bottle of conditioner from the salon. Bloody Ginger Group.

But he advised me to get a bottle of Johnsons baby shampoo, which I did - from £ shop nearby. Had a look at ingredients and from what I can see it is Salt free and derived from mostly natural ingredients.

Have you found that the treatment has left your hair with less body/ volume?

I really struggle with my hair - it's limp, lifeless, thin and prone to frizz (lucky me, eh?)and am interested in this treatment but I just wonder if it made my hair really silky whether it would seem very flat and so even thinner?

Does this make sense?

I got mine for £75 via Groupon, but the salon said they would do it again for that price. They advertise £99 to include a cut, but I didnt want them to cut my hair.

The treatment can last 3months to 6 months, it all depends really. cyril I have very thick hair and lots of it - I wont really know what it is like until I wash it myself in 3 days time. yuk. Will post back to let you know.

I'm off to have mine this morning, really relieved Merlin that it looks ok before you wash it off - I've got a meeting to go to on Thursday and dreaded looking like Morticia Grin

Did you get any instructions on not touching it? DS is in the habit of pulling my hair when I'm mumsnetting busy.

Wish I'd known about Baby Shampoo. I have a bottle of it in my bathroom cabinet for washing cashmere but got conned into buying special shampoo & conditioner at £10 a pop - it was Polish, and not a known brand, but I didn't have time to go looking for salt free shampoo over the following 4-5 days so ended up buying their stuff. I'm not massively impressed. I had it done just over a week ago and it's not as smooth as I expected it to be after only a week and a half, despite the fact that I like to curl the ends and it won't hold a curl for longer than about an hour now.

Oh, also, do check the ingredients with the salon. There was a spot on Radio 4 yesterday saying a lot of the products for this are illegal in other countries because they contain way over the safe levels of Formaldehyde which can be very harmful with repeated use. (There are other names for Formaldehyde too so check for those as well - Google to find out the other names.)

well I have been out and walked the dog in the drizzle/fog and it has stayed pretty straight and frizz free.

I just straightened it again and it is perfect. The hairdresser said to keep straightening it as the more heat applied the better result in future.

No idea what mine was made from, it smelled like Chocolate! Grin

Slightly worried about the formaldehyde but if you are only having it done every 3 - 6 months can it be that bad for you?!

Mine cost £70 (my hairdresser is mobile but I went to the salon where she has a chair one day a week).

No special instructions other than the sulphate free shampoo.

I had mine done two weeks ago, and also bought the TIGI sulphate free shampoo - I have just looked up the ingrediants for Johnsons Baby Shampoo, and unless I am being stupid (which is a strong possibility Blush) it contains sulphate:

Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4. May also contain: Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide

it isnt the sulphates that I was told to avoid but the salt in shampoo.

And i think the 'modern' keratin treatments do not contain formaldehyde now from what I have read on other threads, may be mistaken though.

I had mine done in November and it's just starting to look a bit frizzier again now. I bought the shampoo and conditioner from the hairdressers (at £15 each!) and then promptly left them at a hotel I stayed in a few weeks later Sad I bought Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner as they are sulphate free and then had some of teh expensive stuff for Christmas (it's Alterna Hemp)

I was told not to tuck my hair behind my ears / put it up in a ponytail etc until I had washed it off 3 days after the treatment. Mine smelled of chocolate as well, which started to get a bit sickly after a day or so Grin

yeah truffkin considering that I am lo carbing no sugaring it is quite sickly indeed. Grin

not tucking my hair behind my ears is driving me crazy and I was so hot last night in bed as I have v thick, long hair that I always tie up at bedtime. (v sexy)

Cant wait to wash it on Thursday to see what it is like afterwards.

so is it sulphate free or salt free shampoo that we need?

I was told at Toni and Guy that it was Sulphate Free shampoo I needed.

I've always been under the understanding that it's Salt free (Sodium Chloride). Sulphate is completely different and most shampoos contain SLS or ALS (Sodium Laureth Sulphate or Amonium Laureth Suplphate) as a foaming agent which is something I have been trying to avoid for a while for environmental reasons, but that wasn't the stuff I was told to avoid for this treatment.

well you get sodium lauryl sulphate/ide so I suppose that is both isnt it?

right I have some shampoo from Waitrose that I use on my daughters hair it is Weleda lemon balm and orange blossom and is free from lauryl/laurate sulphates but has Sodium in it, which is salt.

oh well, come the end of the week I will know.

havingkittens that is what I thought, avoid Sodium, so although my Weleda shampoo has no sulphates it is full of bloody sodium.

Think I will just have to buy one that is sulphate and sodium free. jeez so much for my £1 baby shampoo.

I just got back with total pancake hair.

My hairdresser said gentle shampoo and conditioner was fine. I asked him about the sodium free thing and he said he hadn't heard that, it was only important to avoid dandruff/treatment shampoos and anything with surfactants and don't get it wet or sweaty and no tying up etc. Plus no products till it's washed on in 4 days time.

It's already driving me nuts in my eyes and it's hard keeping away from DS sticky little fists.

It does contain formaldehyde, but now below the allowed amount in the UK. Before it was popular in Brazil (Jennifer anniston was a big fan he says) with a higher formaldehyde content.

We both wore little masks when he was using the straighteners!

I have had my second BBD recently and will be finally washing my hair after 4 days tomorrow Smile

I was told to avoid shampoos with citric acid in them - no mention of anything else...I was also told to avoid water at any cost including rain/sleet etc

Didn't wear a mask either!

Sounds like we are all getting different messages!
