I'm new to the boards and of a certain age,but I thought that a Brazillian meant that you would not need a blow dry. Please enlighten me.

Monadami · 22/01/2011 02:11

Did you need to buy products to maintain it? I've bought one on Groupon, but haven't had it done yet.

PandaEis · 22/01/2011 02:13

erm...what would that entail exactly??Grin i agree with maras2 that my understanding of 'brazillian' anything would no longer leave much to...erm...dry??Confused

LyraSilvertongue · 22/01/2011 02:39

Isn't it a new hair straightening technique (the hair on the head, i mean).

Monadami · 22/01/2011 02:40

It's a new hair straightening treatment called Brazilian Keratin, I believe it originates in Brazil, hence the name.

The procedure involves the solution being put onto the hair and small strands of hair straightened with heated straighteners. I think the idea is the hair is being straightened without use of harsh chemicals, it's more ntural and it becomes more manageable between washes. It can apparently be used on all hair types. It is costly though and you may be charged in excess of £200

upahill · 22/01/2011 08:50

This is interesting because like Monadami I bought a Groupon and then cancelled it.

Would you let us know how you get on with it over the coming weeks.

Where did you have it done if you don't mind me asking?

whoneedssleepanyway · 22/01/2011 19:44

I am so tempted to have one of these but hefty price tag is putting me off but tempted to save up. How soon can u wash your hair?

Havingkittens · 23/01/2011 01:05

It doesn't straighten it, it conditions and smoothes it. You still keep your natural wave if you have wavy or curly hair but it's meant to stop if frizzing out or going fluffy which means you can let it dry naturally and not worry about it going fuzzy in the damp or humid weather.

I booked one on Groupon too, just got to get around to booking it. I look like and 80s poodle rocker if I let my hair dry naturally. Sad

You don't have to use special products to maintain it but you need to buy a shampoo that doesn't contain sodium chloride/salt, which is harder than you would think.

Monadami · 23/01/2011 03:52

I usually have my hair texturized, so not sure I'll get the desired effects with the Brazilian, but will give it a go. Kittens, did it take ages to do? And if you let your hair dry naturally now, how does your hair look

whoneedssleepanyway · 23/01/2011 08:59

That sounds just what I need kittens, my hair is naturally straight but if I leave it to dry on its own it goes into a big frizz ball, i have to blow dry and use ghds, to get it to go silky and glossy!

will look out for one on groupon methinks!

Havingkittens · 23/01/2011 09:57

I've not got around to having mine done yet. I need to do my roots this week so will probably try to get it done next week.

The great thing about it is that it means you don't have to heat style your hair, which can completely fry your hair after a while.

The offers don't seem to come up that often so keep your eyes peeled!

upahill · 23/01/2011 10:37

Hmmmm. I'm beginig to wish I never asked for a refund from Groupon now and gone ahead with it!!

CrispyHedgehog · 23/01/2011 10:47

I had it done at the beginning of December and it's the best thing I've ever done!

My tangly, frizzy, unruly, 80's hairband mop is now a glossy, swishy mane.

I still have curls but they're looser and look much nicer and if I choose to straighten or blow dry my hair it takes a fraction of the time it used to and stays in the style, rather than frizzing out of it within a couple of hours.

The salon gave me 400ml bottles of shampoo and conditioner to start off with but I now need to buy some more conditioner, which is around £18 I think.

The salon said it would last 4-6 months and it cost £225 but it was definitely worth it and I will have it done again when needed.

Havingkittens · 23/01/2011 11:48

Haha, 80s hair band is exactly the analogy I use to describe mine! I rather favour a Dita Von Teese look to David Coverdale if I can help it.

grumpypants · 23/01/2011 11:50

Mine was done in October - am now seeing the need to have it repeated. been fantastic tho - if I blow dry it it looks amazing. Left to dry naturally it is less lovely, smooth but wavy, in a wig like way. £150 plus products, so sort of worth it.

SauvignonBlanche · 23/01/2011 11:50

OP, how much did it cost?

JustAnother · 23/01/2011 16:03

I have done it 4 times before, and yesterday I had the Groupon one done at a different saloon. I am not convinced they did it right. Normally they leave the product for 30/40 minutes. Well, yesterday they left it for 15. I mentioned it to the manager and he assured me 15 was enough. I am concerned that when I was it on Tuesday, it will go back to normal. The saloon was kind of strange. They managed to burn my ear twice as they were finishing the drying. I have normal size ears, honestly!, but they still asked me to bend my ear out of the way while they used the straighteners. LOL! I've never come accross that one before.

merlin · 23/01/2011 21:08

Sorry for not coming back before - was away for weekend.

My hairdresser is mobile - although she rents a chair in a salon 2 mornings a week and that's where I went this time. £70 for the treatment, £11 for the salt free shampoo.

I forgot to take my hairdryer with me this weekend so had to leave it to dry naturally this morning. My hair is naturally wavy and layered and it dried very smooth with no 'fluffy' bits.

merlin · 23/01/2011 21:11

Forgot to say, the procedure she did was first to wash my hair, then applied the treatment in sections all over (not my roots so I still have a bit of 'oomph'!). Then she roughly blow dried it, straightened it and then washed and conditioned it again.

Took about 2 hrs (she gave me a trim as well).

SoundTheOctoalert · 23/01/2011 21:15

I had one done on groupon and was really disappointed. i think it was a rubbish salon, they didn't leave the product in at all, just straightened it immediately - not convinced they really knew what they were doing. And they sold me shampoo/conditioner containing sodium so I had to take it back. I do sometimes wonder about going somewhere half decent and getting it done there but I worry that the money will be wasted again..

JustAnother · 23/01/2011 21:24

Sound, was the saloon in west London? that's where I went and I got the same impression

Havingkittens · 23/01/2011 21:35

Oh shite, where did you go? I'm going to the Acton salon too. Is it rubbish? If it is I might start giving Groupon a miss. I came very close to buying a voucher for Microdermabrasion a couple of weeks ago at a rather dodgy looking salon with really bad reviews online.

JustAnother · 23/01/2011 21:40

I went to the Acton saloon, and they only left the product on for 15 minutes. See my post further up. I haven't washed it yet, so I don't know what's going to happen. I can repost on Tuesday morning if you want. I will have washed it by then.

lovingthesun · 23/01/2011 22:20

you can also buy the treatment on ebay. I bought mine for £20, have used it twice & have enough for another treatment.

It's fab...wash hair, dry, apply solution, open windows, straighten, leave for 3 days & then wash out.

BecauseItoldYouSo · 23/01/2011 22:39

I have had it done twice now. The second one I got done at the Salon in Acton and they left it in for 45 mins (with a timer). Then roughly dried and straightened. Have had it for over 2 weeks now and is fine. Need to colour my hair now as roots are bad so will see if that affects it negatively in anyway.

They offered me products which were sodium free but I still had some left over from my first time round.

I absolutely hate the no wash, touch, tie back, clip, etc for 3 days thing though. It drives me INSANE.

I think that next time I will try the "intelligent" treatment which you can wash the same day.
