What can be done about blackheads?

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 14:23

Can they be removed at home, or would I be better off going to a salon and having a facial? I've had them for years and years but I actually feel really embarrassed asking about them in rl. Please can anyone help? They don't seem to come out very easily if I squeeze them myself (sorry)

Can I draw your attention to my unpleasant problem again please?

Oil cleansing method sorted mine out. Had them for years.

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 15:35

Did it really ruddynorah? I did try it but didn't persevere. How long did it take?

Have a dermalogica facial and be extracted.
Hurts like hell, but you will be half a stone lighter

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 17:06

Thanks deaddei, does it last though, or do you have to keep having it done every month?

I have a facial about 4 or 5 times a year if I remember, but the key is exfoliation between treatments.
I use daily microexfoliation from Dermalogica (no I don't work for them!), which is a really gentle rice based scrub.
I have also had a course of microdermabrasion which has made them vanish (but I am old)

chimchar · 01/09/2010 17:08

come over mine...i'll squeeze them!

i love squeezing blackheads! Grin

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 17:11

chimchar you'd soon give up. They're not like normal ones, nothing comes out!

So do I- my dh refuses to let me anymore.
He has a nose with craters not unlike the moon's surface.....
my dad used to have a huge one on the back of his neck (more a hole left by a boil), and mum used to get it out with a hairpin.

chimchar · 01/09/2010 17:25

Don't deaddai. You're making me dribble!!! Blush

nikki1978 · 01/09/2010 17:28

I have them literally all over my nose for some reason - like you the type that won't come out. I think I just have massive pores or something! I had extraction done at a facial and it was effing painful on the nose!

deaddei · 01/09/2010 17:30

DD (13) has had a couple of facials this summer- started with spots and she was quite congested.
She nearly died at the extraction, but 5 weeks later had a second one, and her skin is so much better.
The beautician had a really good chat to her about skin care, gave her some samples etc- being 13 she doesn't listen to me.

LadySanders · 01/09/2010 17:43

god i have same problem. got worse when i was having facials with extractions every fortnight in my 20s... don't have the facials anymore but still get terrible blackheads... the exfoliation scrubs seem to make them worse too, think too much irritation... now use a baby sponge with light facial wash... and am wondering about investing in one of these...

me too - huge pores that get clogged

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 21:05

Ok, I'm going to try the ocm, properly this time, then if that doesn't work, my local college does dermalogica facials for £11.95! Thanks all.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 01/09/2010 23:22

I used to squeeze the ones on my nose (more like open pores really) all through my teens and twenties - just ended up with nail marks and skin peeling off, plus it seemed to make the blackheads breed.

I don't really bother now, although I hate them.

Ruddynorah, did you have loads of the little black dots or larger ones here and there? And how long did ocm take?

carefulwiththataxe · 02/09/2010 17:50

Bumping this - interested to know how long ocm took to see any results. Also - are you meant to use it every day?

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 20:32

i had dreadful dreadful skin. oily forehead and nose, dry cheeks. nose covered in blackheads and large open pores. my skin is a real mix, i'm half white english and half north african.

did oil cleansing and it is all totally clear. no oil, no dryness, no spots and a clear nose with no visible pores or blackheads. i just god damn wish someone told me about it when i was 15 instead if me trying the body shop black head remover implement and every single oil minimising black head removing lotion and potion under the sun. ridiculous!

took 2 weeks to show it was working. never looked back. i'm probably a year into it now Grin

TigerseyeMum · 02/09/2010 20:41

I used to have blackheads a lot but I use REN Mayblossom and Wotsit facial cleanser and my skin is really clear now.

If I switch to another cleanser they come back again. It contains naturally-occurring salicylic acid I think and that seems to help.

nikki1978 · 02/09/2010 20:43

What is oil cleansing?

LadySanders · 02/09/2010 21:05

i've found this link, is this the right thing?

www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/

nowherewoman · 02/09/2010 21:06

Right I'm starting ocm now!! ruddynorah can I ask how often you do it as it says you don't have to do it every day? oil cleansing

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 21:41

i do it every morning. just hot flannel at night. you could do it other way round though.

it's not a mix and match sort of a thing. you can't do a day of oil cleanse then your normal cleanser. your skin find a new balance, keeps itself moisturised etc with oil cleansing.

i now maintain with a 90% olive oil and 10% castor oil. but to start with i used more castor oil to do a good clear out.

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 21:43

yes ladysanders that's it. lots of threads about it on here too, with me on most of them! Grin

elportodelgato · 02/09/2010 21:46

biore nose strips from Boots, I love them and they work, you can actually see the little fuckers on the strip when you take it off. You can use them every 3 days and I have seen a big improvement. Having said that, I am so intrigued by the oil cleansing thing, may give that a go soon
