What can be done about blackheads?

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 14:23

Can they be removed at home, or would I be better off going to a salon and having a facial? I've had them for years and years but I actually feel really embarrassed asking about them in rl. Please can anyone help? They don't seem to come out very easily if I squeeze them myself (sorry)

no to the strips! they'll just come back. that's why they sell the strips in boxes, not single!!

nowherewoman · 02/09/2010 21:57

Thanks ruddynorah, I've just started so will do a hot flannel tomorrow morning.

oh i want to do the ocm, but can't find caster oil, where do you buy such things.

I like the biore strips, not really for how well they work long term, but more because I like inspecting the little blackheads that are pulled Grin

I got it from lloyds pharmacy, they had to get it out of a locked cupboard and it was £1.49

do you then put moisturiser on afterwards???

and moisturise on a morning as normal as well? thank you

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 22:27

no moisturiser. ever.

rub oil in your skin, steam with hot flannel and wipe off. that is it.

at first i sometimes found the amount of castor oil was a bit drying so i'd pop a bit of extra oil on the dry bits. then i adjusted the oil levels so used more olive oil.

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 22:27

castor oil from boots, behind the counter.

Exogenesis · 02/09/2010 22:29

Okay I really want to try the oil thingy.

Laptop useless unable to load more than one page at a time.

Step by step run it by me please please please ... Grin

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 22:35

ok.

get castor oil and olive oil.

mix in travel size pump bottle.

pump one blob (50p size ish) on hands. rub into face. massge in, especially around nose and bad areas.

soak flannel in steamy hot water, ring it out.

hold flannel to face to steam.

wipe oil off gently with still a bit warm flannel (the steam mostly gets it off).

that's all!

sometimes i wipe over my eyes with a tissue after if i'm applying a lot of eye make up just to get rid of any excess oil. however, i now get my lashes tinted and permed so this is no longer an issue!

Exogenesis · 02/09/2010 22:40

I thank you muchly.

I shall get some Castor oil tommorow and give it a go.....

How long before you see any results? a month? 2?

Thank you again Grin

charltonchick · 02/09/2010 22:41

I've been using Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish and it's really helped. I think it must be cos using the hot flannel opens up the pores and really gets in there and cleanses properly (no I don't work for her either!!!).

WhatsWrongWithYou · 02/09/2010 23:01

So, (sorry to be thick) in the morning, you just use hot flannel again and no moisturiser still?

ruddynorah · 02/09/2010 23:08

results 2 weeks. i do oil in the morning rather than at night. i work evenings so get in late, just quick wipe and fall into bed. i do the whole routine in the morning.

no moisturiser ever. ever!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 02/09/2010 23:29

Gulp!

LadySanders · 03/09/2010 07:59

brill, thanks for this ruddynorah, i am off to purchase my castor oil as soon as the shops open (is there an excited face smiley??)

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2010 09:07

thanks rn -will give the oil cleansing method a go and report back

EauRouge · 03/09/2010 09:26

Oh, I absolutely love the sound of that oil cleansing, it sounds very gentle, not to mention cheap Grin I have some potentially stupid questions too- Is it OK to do when pregnant? I know I'm not supposed to drink castor oil but is it OK to rub it all over my face? What do you do to remove make-up and dirt on the days when you are not using the oil? And it says sunflower seed oil in the link, is that just cooking oil? Confused

Thanks ruddynorah, you just might save my skin (and save me lots of money) Grin

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2010 09:34

And I can't bear moisturiser so it sounds better and better

moragbellingham · 03/09/2010 10:12

I'm off for a spot of castor oil later.
Worth a try as my skin seems worse now I'm older for some reason.

carefulwiththataxe · 03/09/2010 17:48

Local Boots didn't stock castor oil btw - had to get it from Lloyds Pharmacy and they got it out from under the counter and then asked me what I wanted it for in rather a suspicious way! Very odd...

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2010 18:40

Are you pregnant? Do you have any pregnant friends??

FunnyLittleFrog · 03/09/2010 19:14

I think there's an old wives tale about using castor oil to bring on contractions so pharmacies are very careful about selling it. I bought mine online and got an email questionnaire asking what I wanted it for!

Word of warning about OCM - go easy on the castor oil as it is very drying. I gave up after a week as my skin was peeling. Does work brilliantly though if you get the balance right - for me that was 5% castor oil, 99% olive oil.

ruddynorah · 03/09/2010 19:41

eau there isn't a day I don't oil, not sure what u mean. I oil every morning. Flannel each night, sometimes I don't even do that. The oil cleans the skin, gets rid of make up fine.

I mentioned the dryness earlier. Go easy on the castor oil if you have dry skin.

ruddynorah · 03/09/2010 19:50

Oh and yes fine when pregnant. Ds is 9months old and I oiled all the time I was pregnant with him.

SandyisinCaldwell · 03/09/2010 20:35

would the oil method be okay for my dd who is 13?
