Have to say, I’m very happy with the result. England never deserved it anyway. Easy way to the final then played way too defensively. Can’t wait until Southgate gets another 2 years

Spain were the better team, simple as that. England played pretty well. We scored a very good goal and had another near goal headed off the line. Also, to come back from 1-0 down against superior opposition takes guts. And England defended heroically as well. But Spain were painfully superior. We could barely get hold of the ball. If it had gone to extra time, I think they’d have scored before it even reached penalties.

For me, the question is why are Spain so much better. What do they do that we don’t. We have a larger population and just as good a league. What do they do that we don’t? Is it that they’re better at grass roots? Do they train their talented youngsters to a higher standard? Do they have more intelligent and skilful junior coaches? The gulf in class was painful.

Edited

They have a decent manager...

Well played Spain. 🇪🇸 The best team in the tournament won it, and deservedly so. 👏👏👏

Southgate has done an outstanding job. He has put the pride back into English football. But, intelligent chap that he is, he may decide that he has taken this team as far as he can. And he will probably be correct. He can walk away with his head held high, and he deserves our respect.

Saka????

Or doesn’t he count as a ‘proper ‘ Englishman?

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 14/07/2024 23:09

England got through the group stage having scored 2 goals.
I am afraid you need to score more goals than that to be a serious contender.
I also think they were lucky to get through on the knockout rounds so it can't really be a surprise that we are where we are, surely!

gleefulstar · 14/07/2024 23:09

Have to start off by saying I LOVE Pickford, I ready do.

But why they fuck all the long passes??? Not one reached an English player in the first half. Not one!!! He had Stones literally telling him to pass it to him and he didn't. Then he had Watkins in the second half saying "give it to me!" And he still didn't. Just pisses me off. 30% possession in first half and when we did have the ball we just kept giving it away. Not just Pickford, all the passing was like watching a primary school B team. Can't blame Southgate for that!!

flapjackfairy · 14/07/2024 23:10

always the bridesmaid. Never the bride !

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 14/07/2024 23:13

Well played Spain.

As a Liverpool fan, the irony of both goals coming from the right side is not lost on me. Trent would have been slaughtered but maybe Kyle Walker will get an easier time.

It's sad but I just hope none of the players get abuse, it was the setup that failed not the players.

tillyandmilly · 14/07/2024 23:15

Thank god its all over!

I have to say, Ramsdale has much better distribution, but it's difficult to say he should start before Pickford.

Just wanted to say thanks to @DuncinToffee for setting up the previous Euro 2024 threads and to @DBSFstupid for this one. It has been great fun chatting, laughing and sharing opinions with you all through the championships; wish it had ended on the high we were hoping for, but hey, let's keep things in perspective - 22 other teams had it worse than us!

Not even a deserving bridesmaid really.

Rewis · 14/07/2024 23:33

I don't really like it when they take off the medals immediately. Be polite and wait until you're out of the podium.

Also props for Spain FA president. Didn't kiss or sexually harrass a single player 👌🏻

I'm actually jealous of England fans who see no difference between beating, say, Slovakia and beating Portugal or Brazil. Their only measure is the round you end up at. If you lose to Argentinia in the last 16, shit. If you beat Switzerland in the quarters, heroes. I'd love it.

Agree, they were hopeless. Some great players though and a brilliant goal from Cole Palmer.
Too little too late again. I can’t bear Southgate. He’s not half as good as he’s made out to be.
Harry Kane should never have been on that pitch.
At least Micah Richards said it like it was at the end.
Gutted for the team.

Oblomov24 · 15/07/2024 00:31

Fed up too. We played poorly and made Spain look better than they were. Disappointing. Sad

Oblomov24 · 15/07/2024 00:36

Don't blame kane. Kane looked poor, but that's because he's being asked to play a role he doesn't normally do. The team set up doesn't suit him. It doesn't suit anyone. Foden and Bellingham don't play like that for their clubs. Foden has been superb this season. But he looked like a shadow of himself. Why? Because the set up doesn't suit him, doesn't play to his strengths. Same with saka. He was good, better than most, but he plays better at Arsenal. Why is that?

The manager.

But, apparently, he is above all reproach...

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 15/07/2024 01:21

And I do blame Kane as well. He didn't seem to be making the slightest effort to close Spain down, or even put the slightest hint of an effort in to the press.

Really, there were players in that team who were willing to run through brick walls, but he could hardly bring himself to jog occasionally...

Maggiethecat · 15/07/2024 07:26

Can we put into perspective how good the Spanish team were instead of beating up our team?
They won all their games in the tournament beating top teams along the way. They played cohesive and fast football.

Our men played well, Spain could have scored a lot more.

Can we take time to thank the team and the manager for their effort.

Rewis · 15/07/2024 07:28

I also hope someone will coach Bellingham out of the diving. It got really annoying at some point. His confidence is turning into arrogance and it is getting to his head.

Also hope that the next manager will also tell pickford that you don't need to do long passes without a target every.single.time.

To Southgates credit he did start making subs at a reasonable time. Spain was the best team in the tournament so the win went to right address. Also their team is stil lso young that they'll be contenders for the next 10 years. Also the King looked so happy with the trophy.

Spain have looked good throughout, to be fair.

You are welcome, I have enjoyed these threads ⚽

Hellohah · 15/07/2024 09:01

I didn't realise there was another thread.

Messed up with my prediction 🤷🏻‍♀️
Spain deserved it overall, they were the best team in the tournament. I'm not too disappointed.
We played our best in the final but I think it was the lack of making the necessary changes in the rest of the tournament that cost us.
The team that started shouldn't have started, we sat back after we equalised.
We had the opportunity to play football and we just didn't through the entire thing, so it was the right result.

Heard some Germans on TikTok saying Jürgen Klopp should take over, I agree with this. He'd have us playing the football we can play (as much as it pains me, supporting an ex-Liverpool manager). We have far too many attacking options to be getting through a tournament like we've just done.

DuncinToffee · 15/07/2024 09:14

Oooh, I came fourth in the MN Fantasy League Grin

'Hey Jude' was the winner by quite a margin, well played 🏆
