Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

“Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.”

I thought of you straight away when I saw that result. Gutted for you.

Shocking 10 minutes, absolutely brutal Sad

Tarkan · 31/08/2024 17:37

0-0 at Gayfield in the end. Lots of chances and definitely starting to play better as a team so I'm starting to feel a bit more hopeful about the season. If we could finish somewhere in the middle of the table that would be perfect.

And don't be fooled by the sunshine at Gayfield. We're right on the North Sea (and there may actually be a ball bobbing in the water today 🤣). There was a bit of a cool breeze by the second half and the haar was threatening to come in (thankfully it didn't) but definitely needed my hoodie there by the second half. One of my nearby seat-mates had 3 layers on though. 🤣

I did have a lovely walk away after though, around the marina/harbour and I'm now in a lovely wee sheltered beer garden. I'm hiding in the shade but it's not too cold here just yet although I'm heading off soon to meet a friend in town.

I am just stunned, no idea what just happened. How to ruin a pleasant Saturday afternoon in 10 minutes.

That was shocking. Sounds like they completely lost concentration.
I haven't seen the red card at the emirates yet but sounds like it was harsh. Very good point for us though.

Tarkan · 31/08/2024 17:44

I was thinking of finding another pub to watch West Ham v City but I might not bother now. 🙈🤣

The ref is either corrupt, totally incompetent or has a bias against Arsenal

Any of those things make it totally unacceptable for him to referee another Arsenal game-ideally never seen in the PL again.

As Saka said all we ask for is consistency.

The kick away in the first half by a Brighton player was half way down the pitch and despite it being called to his attention he ignored it.

It's no wonder we feel like they are against us-this particular ref has a history with shocking Arsenal calls.

Declan Rice is an England International, played hundreds of games for West Ham and has never been sent off in his career. Hmmm...

Yes, funny that Greater Manchester born Chris Kavanaugh manages to come up with a controversial decision that works in favour of Man City...

MrsMitford3 · 31/08/2024 20:10

And also conveniently takes Rice out of NLD.

How fortuitous for City.

Yes, you see so many referees bottling out of giving a second yellow for a definite foul and Kavanaugh does this.

Brefugee · 31/08/2024 21:00

Sheffield Wednesday working hard to consolidate their position close to the relegation zone.
Gladbach had a good win today which gives me hope for the future.

Rice kicked the ball away, before he was kicked, the ref showed the yellow for kicking the ball away - which in football rules means that everything after that is not considered for anything. It was bloody harsh, but it was a dick move. The yellow was excessive tho - he needed a finger-wagging talking-to from the ref, no more than that.

Gosh, @DuncinToffee that was a shocker. Really brings the mood down.

JasonTindallsTan · 31/08/2024 21:02

Gordon got a second yellow for kicking the ball away last season - took him out the Everton match, annoying but it’s the rules 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes, hopefully, Rice and the rest of the team will learn from this.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 31/08/2024 21:34

Rice slightly knocked the ball as it was kicked towards him.

Joao Pedro had blatantly hoofed the ball half the length of the pitch in the first half after it had gone out, and not even a word.

It's quite blatant.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 31/08/2024 21:40

Not to mention, if this had been Gabriel, it would have been a penalty for hand ball. And you all know it.

I don’t think everyone believes Arsenal are the most hard done to team in the premier league 😂

The arm is in a neutral position. The guidance for this season i understand was in that situation this would not constitute a handball - to avoid the situation of defenders having to defend with their arms behind their back.

cheesychipsontheoche · 31/08/2024 23:02

Enjoying this season so far. Not something a Sunderland fan says very often. We had fratton park bouncing today, great day out.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 01/09/2024 00:21

OK, I know Newcastle fans think they're perpetual victims, but maybe when you're threatening City and this level of refereeing happens to you, I won't feel very sympathetic...

You are incredibly rude 🙄 nowhere have I mentioned Newcastle or always being victims of poor refereeing decisions. In fact just last week I said we got away with one. Nor do I bleat on over multiple posts every time we get a decision against us I think should have gone the other way.

I can’t see the silly little link to support your woe is me mentality that you’ve attached above as the video is no longer available.

But I can only assume it wasn’t a clip of this handball attached… Because guess what, Arsenal do get the rub of the green at times despite your frankly batshit theory that the PGMOL only want City to win the league. Why would that even be true, your team is Arsenal not Preston North End. You winning the league wouldn’t really be that much of an upset 🙄 you’ve won it several times before and you will do again. You ain’t Leicester mate.

The referee wasn’t wrong to give the second yellow card to Rice. They were wrong not give cards earlier for the same thing to others but that doesn’t make the one they gave to Rice wrong.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 01/09/2024 10:26

The other thing I don't get, is that even if you think the second yellow was justified (and you'll see Rodri do exactly the same in november with nothing happening), why did the referee do nothing about the assault on Rice?

They even did an interview with him on Match of the Day where he said that as Rice had knocked the ball away "So I kicked him instead". Quite how that isn't violent conduct I'm not entirely sure. It's not as though he went for the ball and missed, the ball had gone and he kicked Rice at around knee height!

DuncinToffee · 01/09/2024 10:27

I do have to laugh at the notion that Arsenal is hard done by. Try being a team outside the Sky 6 Smile

Every team gets dodgy referee decisions, I think it was Wolves last season who had the worst of it.

As for Man City, at least Haaland is earning me points in FPL

Just heard the sad new about the passing of Sol Bamba yesterday. Only 39 and had beaten cancer just 2 years ago.

Remember him celebrating a late winner for Cardiff, whipping his shirt off and running the length of the pitch topless. Ref somehow didn't notice!!

Ha I saw a clip of that interview today. ‘Did you take your shirt off?’ ‘No ref 👀’ 😂

As I understand it - and it is something I have discussed with DH a few times - once the ref blows the whistle, everything after that isn't counted.
There was a bad tackle on (I want to say van Dijk but I'm not sure) a couple of years ago that kept him out of a couple of matches. It happened about a second after the ref had blown up for offside so not even a free kick. It's just how it goes.

Often at the start of a season the Refs overdo the penalizing of whatever it is they're concentrating on that season and it settles down after a few matches. Gladbach had a player sent off in the first match of the season a few years ago, 2nd yellow, because when the ref blew him up for something the player waved his hand dismissively - the Refs were paying close attention to "respect" that season. And after that week? No more yellow cards for really tame stuff like that and the Refs association agreed it had been over the top and the one match ban was cancelled.

Exactly happens to everyone at some point. A couple of seasons ago Brighton had a record number of apologies from referees association for poor decision- I think it was something like 4 in the end!
Yes I agree it was inconsistent which is annoying but we all know that happens.
Yes it seems harsh but he did break the rule and my understanding is that the clubs had all been told the refs were going to be strict about kicking balls away/delaying play this season.

I see your point, but I'm pretty sure he didn't blow until after he'd kicked Rice. But I could be wrong about that.

Violent conduct should be able to be dealt with at any time though. We've seen players getting cards in the tunnel, for instance.

Brefugee · 01/09/2024 13:19

But he blew up for Rice kicking the ball away. So anything after that is moot

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 01/09/2024 13:27

So you don't think violent conduct should be penalised if the ball isn't in play?
