Wiegman sorry!

larkstar · 06/08/2023 12:24

Sweden short on ideas in free play but their goalie might win it for them if it comes to penalties - she's been their best player. Hope Sweden win it - USA look fitter. For a 0-0 I've enjoyed it.

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2023 12:28

Penalties it is

USA will feel robbed if they don't win. Sweden have hung in well with gk star of the show.
Penalties - here we go

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2023 12:45

Sweden win on penalties

I have never seen a VAR on penalties beforeShock

What happened, where is the replay?

OP posts:
Inmyownlittlecorner · 06/08/2023 12:47

I can't believe how tense that was.
I'm not sure I'd cope if that happens on our Monday match!!

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2023 12:48

wow, that was close.

Well done Sweden!

imed · 06/08/2023 12:51

Omg how exciting! So pleased for Sweden.
And Rapinoe missed her penalty!

Wow!

Version12 · 06/08/2023 13:02

Would not have believed a few weeks ago that USA, Germany and Canada would all be out before the quarterfinals.

Brefugee · 06/08/2023 13:04

Germany build their team too much around the football goddess Popp (there are calls, not entirely unseriously) to have her in the men's team. German football is having a crisis. They will examine, come up with a plan and come back stronger, i assume.

That penalty shoot-out was stressful. But I'm happy a European team won.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 06/08/2023 13:16

Congrats Sweden.
Wow - literally the finest of margins. Penalties are brutal though - I hope England can win in normal time tomorrow.

burblish · 06/08/2023 13:58

I still can’t believe that last penalty - a grass blade away from being ruled the other way. Just wow!

AutumnCrow · 06/08/2023 14:11

That was amazing.

AutumnCrow · 06/08/2023 14:14

There is a replay of the penalty/VAR on X (Twitter), and on the Mail Online. I reckon other sources will have it up shortly.

Agree about Popp!

BellaAmorosa · 06/08/2023 15:40

*reliance on Popp, I mean. Football is a team game, forget that at your peril.

@Version12
Staggering. But a great sign for the development of the women's game.

BellaAmorosa · 06/08/2023 15:42

Well done Sweden, for squeaking through.
USWNT have some thinking to do.

Well done Sweden, for squeaking through.
USWNT have some thinking to do.

The US womens team have had it far too easy for too long. None of the footballing powerhouses took women's football seriously (dwarted by the mens game) which has allowed the US to dominate.

Over the last 5 years England is the one major nation that is beginning to treat it seriously (women's premier league starting, tv coverage, use of better facilities, coaching etc). They won the Euros last year so they've already come on in no time. Plus they now showcase the most gifted female footballer I've ever seen in Lauren James (seen plenty of the best female footballers before but they were just decent at the basics, wheras James looks a natural with exquisite ball control and an ability to get out if tight spaces).

From a sporting class POV it is pleasing to see the US go out (even better in heartbreaking fashion) as they are an arrogant, classless bunch. Recall Alex Morgan do some tea drinking gimmick (apparently in reference to the Boston tea party when the tea was dumped into the harbour) after scoring against England in the last world cup. Stay classy. Regards dumping things into water...during the Black Lives Matter protests the English dumped a statue of slave trader Edward Colson into the Bristol harbour.... meanwhile the across the Atlantic, a nation founded by a group of white slaveowning elites (george washington, owner of 600 slaves who during the revolutionary war demanded the British return the 18 slaves who fled his plantation inorder to gain their freedom from his chains, jefferson, owner of 600 slaves, fathering the child of one of his slaves, and pioneer of scientic racism), they, in sharp contrast, are busy polishing their statues.

One nation dumps a statue of a slaveowner, the other polishes theirs.

Brefugee · 06/08/2023 19:13

I think the US team need to get back to basics and concentrate on building up their team. Now Rapinoe (how quick the turnaround with her public image, though, first she could do no wrong, now she can do no right) is going maybe they can develop a team and not base it around personalities.

Back to Germany - having seen Popp in the last billion women's Pokal Finale matches, she is going to be a loss to our national team and to Wolfsburg when she hangs up her boots. But it might be the best thing for the team.

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2023 19:56

The USA have some exciting youngsters, Smith, Rodman, Thompson, Fox, Girma

OP posts:
BellaAmorosa · 06/08/2023 20:40

I like Girma a lot on this showing.

The USWNT problem has been foreseeable since their loss in 2011 to Japan. Sounds daft because they won the WC in 2015 and 2019, but the 2011 loss showed the limitations of a very physical approach to the game.

Germany - it seems to me that as well as being all about Popp, they have got more functional over the years (I may be imagining that!) despite having really good players. Bayern and Wolfsburg are very hard, physically aggressive teams, certainly.

All in all, I'm very happy for Sweden and the Netherlands - great match with SA - but I'm pretty sure they are both going out in the next round.
