F1 2023 - Watchalong thread

At the moment it's pre-season testing and they are in Bahrain as that is where the first race happens

Is anyone watching the preseason testing at the moment?

Anyone follow the WTF1 personnel change over the past few weeks (social media channel) and that Tommy & Matt have set up P1 with just Matt & Tommy as co-owners?

I'm really looking forward to seeing what progress the other teams have been able to make since RBR had their wind tunnel time reduced due to their overspend in 2022 (that was their punishment for doing that).

Not sure if anyone saw the headline about DTS and women only speaking for 6 minutes of this series. I want to add 'and most of that is Geri Bloody Horner whose opinion is worth precisely nothing!'

kljk78 · 03/03/2023 13:45

@MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet oh my goodness it drives me mental how often she is rolled out, I remember saying last year actually, that we see more of Geri than we do Susie...on a motorsport show??!

Stellaris22 · 03/03/2023 13:45

Other than Lewis Hamiltons physio there does seem to be very few women, and none that I can see in the engineering teams.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 03/03/2023 13:50

I wonder if Susie's opted out TBF - whereas Geri would only court the limelight (cynical).

GrouchyKiwi · 03/03/2023 14:01

Susie's now heading the F1 Academy, which is meant to encourage women into the sport, so she's probably very busy with that.

Did Claire Williams step down?

Sulusu · 03/03/2023 14:21

Claire sold Williams a couple of years ago. She was asked to stay on by the new owners but she refused. She said it was exhausting managing the team and wanted to spend more time with her family.

I bet it wasn't easy being the only female manager in F1.

Brazilianadventure · 03/03/2023 14:33

I’m not surprised Susie wasn’t on DTS as she has far more important things to do.

WRT women being on DTS, Angela Lewis’s physio is one of the few high profile females in the paddock. They could have featured Hannah from RB, I know she got awful hate mail/social media comments as the lead strategist and so may not want to appear, but she could have given good insight into RB and Ferraris strategies.

What I am disappointed about is the misogynistic insults women get e.g. Susie only got the F1 Academy job because she is Toto’s wife, Naomi Schiff not having the experience to be part of the sky sports team etc.

@GrouchyKiwi the Williams family sold their stake in the team and so Claire Williams stepped down.

I really hope Alonso is as quick as people are saying he will be - him v Verstappen could be a salty, messy, bitchfest - glorious Grin

Sulusu · 03/03/2023 16:18

For Williams fans like me, James Vowels is the new team manager. He was with Mercedes for years and is very experienced. I'm hopeful things are looking up for Williams with James in charge.

LookItsMeAgain · 03/03/2023 16:33

Can I say that I think Naomi Schiff is a better addition to the Sky F1 team than Danica Patrick to be honest.

I find Danica too frantic or something and she keeps repeating herself which is tedious.

@LookItsMeAgain I agree.

Stellaris22 · 03/03/2023 16:45

I don't have Sky, but did she present W series? I'm still upset about W series not getting more funding as the more equal competition made it exciting.

Itsnotaferret · 03/03/2023 19:28

Is Simon Lazenby drunk????

hoorayhooray · 03/03/2023 19:28

Ooh place marking

GrouchyKiwi · 03/03/2023 19:38

I see that Lewis is allowed to keep his nose studs in while racing this year. Does anyone know what safety issues drivers wearing jewellery creates?

GrouchyKiwi · 03/03/2023 19:39

Oh, and thanks for the reminder about Claire Williams stepping down. I had completely forgotten about that. I've been a bit disillusioned with the whole sport over the past few years (like so many of you) so not paying the best attention.

I believe it is something to do with if there is an accident and they get trapped in the car although not sure what exactly.

The rule has apparently been in place for years but only mentioned last year. Drivers that are married are allowed to wear their wedding rings though!

VariationsonaTheme · 03/03/2023 23:51

I don’t think Lewis’ nosestud is as big a danger to him getting out of the car as Lance Stroll’s hand appears to be! As if he wasn’t dangerous enough on the track, he’s now driving around without being able to grip the steering wheel properly.

So happy the season is underway though, watching FP1 cheered up my lunch time break today.

JimnJoyce · 04/03/2023 09:05

i liked Naomi last year too also loving this year's Sky graphics with the Elvis song

I hope the FIA are paying as much attention to the Aston Martin garage as they have been to Lewis' jewellery.

If Lance had an accident, he wouldn't be able to get out of the car unaided. He needs to step back and let Philippe drive this weekend. He is a hazard at the moment!

He apparently passed the 7 second evacuation test and so was allowed to drive, but it was quite clear yesterday, to anyone watching, that he’s not fit to be handling the car, especially in race situations.

Jesko · 04/03/2023 11:30

Just watching the F1 channel and finding it astounding that Lance Stroll is being praised for driving with such sore hands that he's having to let go of the wheel.

If you did that in a normal road car it'd be stupidly dangerous; at 200 miles an hour it's a bloody murder weapon.

Tilda77 · 04/03/2023 12:38

So glad I've found an F1 thread for 2023
I hope everyone is ready for qualifying today. I'm looking forward to seeing who's going to come out on top and whether RB will have some competition this year!

Sulusu · 04/03/2023 12:48

Alonso still on top after FP3, I think Red Bulls are hiding some pace though, so I still think it's their race to lose. But of an improvement from the Mercs that run too.

Ant Davidson was in the commentary box with Crofty for FP3 and did a good job. I think Ant is the best of the Sky team after Croft and Brundle, and with Brundle likely retiring in the not too distant future it should be Ant replacing him maybe.

I really like Naiomi too but I think she is better as a presenter rather than a commentator. The commentator next to Croft needs to be someone who has raced in F1 for more insight.

HolibobsinApril · 04/03/2023 13:19

From what I understand the nose stud is incase he needs up in an emergency CT scanner as is only tiny and not easy to remove
