F1 2022 Discussion Thread

GrandSlamFinale · 22/05/2022 10:52

After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

This is getting really silly - the FIA has delayed publication of its report on compliance with the budget cap for the FOURTH time now. My prediction is that Red Bull breached and will either get hit with a little slap on the wrist or, if the FIA wants to pretend they have teeth, maybe a deduction of points but only for the constructor and not the drivers, so that they can bluster that they have punished Red Bull without touching the drivers’ championship standings.

Tilda77 · 05/10/2022 21:32

I don't understand how they can say that they'd issue the compliance certificates on October 5th but now it'll be October 10th. I'm sure no one is still there adding up the figures with a calculator and they must know what the results are! Maybe the delay is because they can't agree a suitable punishment and they want to make sure they have all the answers to the all questions when all is revealed?

MadameMinimes · 06/10/2022 08:05

I think this is going to be a massive headache for the FIA. If they did overspend, even if only by the £2m sort of figure that is now being bandied about, then they potentially bought themselves a significant competitive advantage not just for last season but for this season too. If it’s a slap on the wrist then teams will just overspend and then take the penalty… just like they all take engine penalties. They will be very reluctant to make decisions that overturn a championship, potentially two championships. But Ferrari will be pushing for a huge penalty if it could put them back in contention this season and they have huge sway.

LookItsMeAgain · 06/10/2022 12:02

Just going to leave this here:

LadyHarmby · 06/10/2022 12:56

Agree this is an absolute nightmare for the FIA. They need to come down hard as a weak penalty will encourage others (plus it’s essentially cheating) but to revisit the already contentious result of the championship last year…..woah. Even as a Hamilton fan, I have reservations about that!

butterflyflutterby123 · 06/10/2022 13:10

I would not Mind an overturned championship at all. They basically admitted they were wrong, resulting in max winning, so if it's re awarded correctly Id actually feel it was well wrapped up. Not a max critic, I think he's an amazing driver, championship material, but don't think he actually won last year and he deserves an authentic triumph

LadyHarmby · 06/10/2022 13:16

Is it clear that any deduction of points would be applied to last season, rather than this season? The list of punishments posted above doesn’t seem to specify and the assumption is that it applies to the season where the cost cap was breached but is that definite?

mydogisthebest · 06/10/2022 14:03

Surely an overturned championship is the only way to show they mean business?

It's not Verstappen's fault if the team overspent but he didn't win the championship last year fairly and squarly anyway.

MadameMinimes · 06/10/2022 16:04

The thing is that if the cost cap was breached last year then their car this year also benefited from extra development and spending that other teams didn’t have. It gives them a lasting advantage. That will be Ferrari’s argument. It’s also likely that they will be in breach again this year if their accounts have been found to be in breach for last year as the way that they are doing their maths clearly isn’t the same way the FIA is doing theirs.

The thing is, if they broke the budget cap last year (2021) and won the championship under dubious circumstances, and they over turn that result, what do they do about the 2022 season, seeing how far ahead Max is again in his season's championship, having benefitted from the 2021 season??
Could you imagine having won two championships and they both have a MASSIVE asterisk beside them???

They (the FIA) really have made themselves a terrible bed to lie in.

They should have dealt with the Masi decision and revoked lap 58 in the Abu Dhabi GP (which is something that was open to them and available to them in their rules) which would have sorted out the 2021 championships and put a big solid line under both of them. Then with this issue rearing it's ugly face in the 2022 season, any penalty could have been applied to the 2022 season alone and not have had any impact on the result of the previous season.

But they didn't and here we are.

Tilda77 · 06/10/2022 18:35

Makes me wonder what will happen if Max manages to win the WDC this weekend in Japan? Will they then say on Monday "no sorry you haven't won as we're deducting some points off you as you benefited this year for the overspend on the budget cap?"
Knowing the FIA the delay is for a reason....usually to hope a different event becomes the hot talking point and they can sweep things under the carpet

GrouchyKiwi · 06/10/2022 19:56

I suspect they just haven't finished their creative accounting to make it look less bad than it really was.

gingercat02 · 08/10/2022 11:17

Nyck de Vries gets the Alpha Tauri seat and Gasly off to Alpine.

Wonder are RBR lining Nyck up to replace Checo?

Think retirement is the only option left for the Honey Badger 😪 assuming the rumours that he has said no to Williams are true

LookItsMeAgain · 08/10/2022 14:25

Gasly off to Alpine was one of the worst kept secrets in the paddock 😊

Does Haas have a seat available still? Isn't that up for grabs between Nico Hulkenberg and Mick Schumacher? Couldn't Daniel throw his hat into that ring?

burblish · 08/10/2022 15:30

Haas and Williams both have a seat up for grabs, but Ricciardo has been saying he won’t be driving in F1 in 2023. Such a shame - I’d miss the biggest smile in motor racing. I’ve also seen speculation that Logan Sargeant may be in the running for Williams, and that Antonio Giovanazzi is one of the potential names in the frame for Haas (as well as Nico Hulkenberg and a couple of others).

So glad I got up early on a Sunday morning to watch the Japenese GP!

Me too! Grin

That W13 of Mercedes is an absolute shitbox. The engineers got it so wrong this season.

StarCourt · 09/10/2022 10:28

I'm
Just watching the after show Karun on the sky pad the proximity of that tractor on the track is shocking! Also the Marshall pulling Sainz's Ferrari off track while a car whizzes right past him.
Motorsport is Dangerous

ListenLinda · 09/10/2022 14:49

I’m speechless it was there and they were trying to place all the blame on Gasly.
yes he possibly should not have been going that far, but it was there when Verstappen went past.
Crazy, have they forgetten Suzuka 2014!

mydogisthebest · 09/10/2022 15:07

I am glad I didn't bother getting up early to watch. Normally I do but this year am disillusioned with F1.

So my least favourite driver is "World Champion" and we are still to hear the outcome of the cost cap investigation.

Pretty obvious if RD did break it nothing much will happen.

LookItsMeAgain · 09/10/2022 15:30

I think if RBR have been found to have broken the budget cap, then they should be stripped of both championships.

If they haven't broken the budget cap then I think Max is very lucky and at least one of his two driver's championships will not have an asterisk beside it saying "won under dubious circumstances where the FIA couldn't even follow their own rules and guidelines".

LookItsMeAgain · 09/10/2022 15:39

The FIA has penalised Gasly for speeding under red flags - it was red flags for about 2 seconds, just as he was passing the crane on the track.
I think watching his interview with Craig Slater, www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/12716198/japanese-gp-pierre-gasly-feared-for-life-in-truck-near-miss-on-track-fia-penalise-him-for-speeding, you can see that he is so angry and upset.

Jesus! They had a crane in the gravel in 2014 recovering a car and then Jules aquaplaned and ran straight into it and he lost his life as a result.

Typical FIA. Not accepting any responsibility for their actions.

They have in the past two years, managed to turn what was a respectable and respected sport into a complete joke!

The drivers should just refuse to drive. Every single one of them. A walk-out en masse. There won't be enough drivers with super licenses (even with reserve drivers) to fill all of the seats in all of the cars. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the next driver's briefing.

Tilda77 · 09/10/2022 16:18

It seemed like a disappointing conclusion to the 2022 WDC. Half a race and everyone assuming that Max would have to wait til the next race to secure the championship only to be told he was actually champion. The celebrations seemed a bit flat. I imagine Toto was glad he wasn't at the race though!
Gasly had every right to be upset by the recovery team on the track. Even if he had been driving at a slower speed hitting the tractor or the marshall would not have ended well.
Now we will have to wait and see what happens tomorrow with the budget cap. The results of that will probably be as much of a let down as the race was today.
