F1 2022 Discussion Thread

After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

I'm still hoping there is space for Danny Ric somewhere. There are spare seats at Williams, Alfa, Haas and Alpine (seems unlikely he would go back/be wanted at Renault)

I'm hoping too!

burblish · 27/09/2022 12:27

Alfa Romeo have confirmed Zhou will drive for them again next season.

LookItsMeAgain · 27/09/2022 14:27

So the 2023 line up so far is this:

Mercedes - Lewis Hamilton & George Russell (some might think the order these two are written in should be reversed based on this year's results)

Red Bull Racing - Max Verstappen & Sergio Perez

Ferarri - Charles & Carlos (or Charles and Charles 😆)

McLaren - Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri

Alpine - Esteban Ocon & AN OTHER

Aston Martin - Fernando Alonso & Lance Stroll

Alfa Romeo - Valtteri Bottas & Zhou Guanyu

AlphaTauri - Yuki Tsunoda & (possibly Pierre Gasly) AN OTHER

Williams F1 - Alex Albon & AN OTHER

Haas F1 - Kevin Magnussen & AN OTHER

So the teams with seats available are Hass, Williams, AlphaTauri and Alpine. I wonder who will be in those seats and when we will actually find out! Fingers crossed that we'll get some info this weekend as we'll be in Singapore!!!

ChecoPerez · 27/09/2022 14:38

Surely Danny Ric will get one of those seats!

I'm not sure how I'd feel if he joined NASCAR...

Tilda77 · 30/09/2022 09:51

There seems to be speculation that Red Bull exceeded last years budget price cap.....I wonder how that will play out? I mentioned in a previous post that I was hoping that Red Bull would be found to be cheating. If this is true it may have helped them to develop their car this season?

LemonRedwood · 30/09/2022 13:37

Oh that is interesting. Thanks Tilda, where have you read that?

Rowgtfc72 · 30/09/2022 13:56

Red Bull cheating?
Really?
Would be interesting to see how that one plays out.

GrouchyKiwi · 30/09/2022 14:03

Here's an article on the BBC F1 page

Aston Martin is suspected too.

LemonRedwood · 30/09/2022 14:07

Thanks GrouchyKiwi

"The FIA, particularly Mohammed [bin Sulayem, the president], has shown a pretty robust stance on enforcing all kinds of regulations. So if we are talking now about something big, he will show the same integrity and leadership that he has done before."

Toto's thrown down the gauntlet there hasn't he? Basically saying if you're going to get your knickers in a twist over jewellery and underwear then let's see what you do about something that really matters.

LookItsMeAgain · 30/09/2022 15:33

That is interesting. I think Verstappen will win the driver's championship at either this race or the next but could you imagine that both of his championships would have an asterisk beside them?

To have won under dubious circumstances once is one thing....If found to be doing it twice is just well, I don't have a suitable word.

I do love how devious yet all-above-board and playing-by-the-rules Toto is about this. If this doesn't go the way that they are hoping, I can see Mercedes deciding to withdraw from F1, not doing a Ferrari and threatening to withdraw, actually doing it.

I never realised there was an F1 thread until today. Delighted !

Am I reading the BBC report correctly that its saying one team in particular had a large over spend that could potentially be covered up to a smaller offence ?

LookItsMeAgain · 30/09/2022 18:13

Welcome @dublino .

If RBR have had a significant overspend in 2021 that would certainly explain how they are SO far ahead of the competition in 2022 (development of the new car) and that would naturally carry forwards to 2023 (seeing how good the car is in 2022 they could further develop it for the following year).

That team is toxic. To it's drivers and to the sport at the moment. There is something hanging around that team like a bad smell at the moment, in my opinion. Vettel got out of that team at the right time. Thinking back to the Multi-21 incident, I don't think Vettel would have been as arrogant to Webber had they both been driving for a different team. I really don't.

This could be a huge game changer and it will be up to the FIA President to enforce the regulations and also to be seen to be doing it too.

The sport cannot afford another incident like Abu Dhabi 2021.

ListenLinda · 01/10/2022 08:23

It will be very interesting to see how this places out.

Whinger spice couldn’t give a straight answer when asked.
Not that it will matter, it won’t make Lewis last years Champion, Max will still win this one and no significant effect to follow.
A precedent could be set here, if the punishment is a joke, how many more teams will just blow the cap next year?

Tilda77 · 01/10/2022 11:50

Possible penalties for breaching the budget cap....

I'm surprised to see Alex Albon this week. I thought after his appendectomy and his respiratory failure that he would be taking it easy.

But then again, I'd imagine he would have gone through a stringent medical check with the team before stepping foot in the car!

I hope he has a good race this weekend.

ListenLinda · 02/10/2022 13:20

Delayed start, looks very wet out there.

ChecoPerez · 02/10/2022 14:04

Hoping for no crashes today - track is greasy!

LemonRedwood · 02/10/2022 15:10

For all the safety cars it's been quite a dull race so far and were not at half distance yet.

I'm surprised they put the mediums on Russell when they did. I get they had to do something for him but he was sliding around everywhere coming out of the pit lane. Not surprised at all no one else has pitted after they saw that!

LemonRedwood · 02/10/2022 15:22

Spoke too soon, things just got interesting. I'll take credit for that I think - F1 gods wanting to prove me wrong 😁

Rowgtfc72 · 02/10/2022 15:42

Norris on the podium would be lovely.......

ChecoPerez · 02/10/2022 16:18

Chuffed for Sergio! Good race! Did think Le Clerc was going to take him at one point.

Proud of Danny Ric to be up in 5th!

Not a good race for Russell - shame.

Tilda77 · 02/10/2022 16:19

I was so willing Leclerc to over take Perez but it wasn't meant to be. An unlucky race for Russell and Hamilton. Verstappen didn't have it all his way today...makes a change from his usual domination! A fantastic race for McLaren. I agree @Rowgtfc72 would have been nice to have seen Norris on the podium

Rowgtfc72 · 02/10/2022 16:22

And now we have to wait and see if perez keeps his win.
Don't see why they couldn't make a decision before the podium.
Was a good race without the usual suspects at the front.

LookItsMeAgain · 02/10/2022 17:36

What is the purpose of having stewards during the race if they don't make decisions that could affect the outcome of the race during the race???

It's another demonstration of just how ineffective the FIA and stewards are when they actually have to make a decision.

I said this to some friends earlier, that whatever your opinion of Masi was or still is, at least he made a decision during the race and stuck to it!!!!

While Perez drove very well, when a decision has the potential to impact the podium positions, it should be made during the race and not afterwards. Otherwise NO race outcome should be made until all of the outstanding stewards decisions are made.
