Why did the England players put medals on and then take them off?

I'm intrigued 🤔

@faithfulbird20

Forget sore losers they were men who hurt their pride. Felt sorry for Saka crying his eyes out. How would you feel losing on your own land?
If he had got it in the net it would have made the score even so it's not like they would have won the game on it. And can't feel too sorry for him. I think people forget just how much these people are paid!
Restawhile · 11/07/2021 23:35

Accepting

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 23:36

Agree about Saka. That young lad got assaulted and then stood up for a penalty. He's had a hell of a night. I hope he has support.

Runners up don't keep their medals on. You just didn't notice before because you've not seen it before because none of the previous England squads got this far.

Horehound · 11/07/2021 23:36

@Restawhile

It’s not because they are sore losers , it’s to show they won’t accept being second best, that they want to aim to win next time rather than excepting ‘ their place ‘ is a runner-up.
Well they are second best, so it's their own doing 🤷 and it does just come across and petty and childish.
drpet49 · 11/07/2021 23:37

So many other football teams have done this in the past so let’s not make it an “England” thing.

Personally I think it is very disrespectful to take the medal off.

Because no one has ever watched a championship final before because it didn't involve England?

It appears the people on this thread including the op haven't because this seems to be news to them.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/07/2021 23:40

taking them off just makes them look pathetic.

If they'd been told a week ago they'd be in the final they'd have bitten your hand off for a medal.

FlumpyPoodle · 11/07/2021 23:41

I get that they see it as a 'losers' medal' and that it's a common thing in football so not just an England team thing, but I always think it looks a bit childish.

Horehound · 11/07/2021 23:42

Because it is childish.

Thank you Flowers just sporting ones to clear up now Grin

Most posters on mn have no clue about football at all.
LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 11/07/2021 23:45

I don't much care for it, but I guarantee you most of the Italian team would've done the same.

TheDinosaurMum · 11/07/2021 23:45

I think it's a football thing. Oh and England Rugby.

I know when I was at the rugby world cup final 2015 Australia accepted and wore their medals but then in 2019 England refused to accept them or took them off straight away, it didn't go down well and was seen as being in poor taste not very sportsmanship.

It's akin to refusing second place on the podium at the euro athletics I suppose.

AHH well there's always next time.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 23:46

Got plenty to say about it though don't they lol.

I can guarantee that every time there's a thread about football on here, someone will mention their salaries. Oddly, nobody cares about tennis players or F1 drivers being as rich as Croesus, but footballers get it in the neck all the time.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:48

"most posters on MN have no clue about football at all. 🤷‍♀️. No, but I have a clue about manners and good sportsmanship and this is rude and disrespectful. No, I've not noticed it before, does that make me a bad person? I would have commented regardless of who did it, I wasn't trying to make it an 'england thing'.

I think it's just a sport thing and wanting to win, not exclusive to football. Serena Williams did a tour of her house and she said she doesn't keep second place trophies

Most mnetters look down on football and anyone who supports it.

Exactly.

And football isn’t as elitist as F1 to get into, not by a long shot. You think it’s just talent that gets you into F1? Lewis Hamilton is an exception, not the rule. Most come from huge wealth and nepotism.

Doyoumind · 11/07/2021 23:52

I don't have an issue with it. It's normal. They are absolutely devastated. Their entire lives since they were less than 10yo have been about this. Let them feel like shit. It is shit for them.

Radio4ordie · 11/07/2021 23:53

They were very disappointed and so I’m not having a dig, apparently it’s very common for teams to take them off but…..You can’t imagine silver medalists doing that at the Olympics! They should be proud of how well they’ve done.

Restawhile · 11/07/2021 23:53

Yes of course they finished second - but it’s like not touching a cup before you have won it . It’s not childish. They congratulated their opponents. It’s to do with passion and ambition.

Easy to say when you just watch it.
