me too. bloody proud of the character of these young men.

CantSayJack · 11/07/2021 23:37

*Forza!!!

TatianaBis · 11/07/2021 23:38

Sorry guys Flowers Gin

Brings back memories of Italian 90. Nessun Dorma.

I prepped my kids on England’s history of losing on penalties - 30 years worth.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 11/07/2021 23:38

I am now expecting a riot by England fans. Make sure if you drive an Italian sports car to keep it out of sight! This is the sad nonsense with the game of football. Winning runner up is a good result especially as the best team won.

Notonthestairs · 11/07/2021 23:38

I thought Southgate said "it's on me" so I'm not sure whether that means he selected or is just taking overall responsibility.

Either way they've done so well. They are a great young team and I think they have a great future ahead of them. On we go.

JacquelineCarlyle · 11/07/2021 23:38

Gutted for England - well done Italy!

ChocBeforeCock · 11/07/2021 23:39

Well done to Rashford, sancho and Saka for stepping up. I think it was curious penalty list for Southgate, especially Saka going last, but penalties are a lottery and they can hold their heads up.

My issue is with our approach over 90 minutes. When we tried to play, we held our own. When we sat back, as we did for most of the second half, they were all over us. Look at the difference Grealish made when he came on - his style of play was exactly what we needed. The whole of football Twitter was saying it. I don’t know why Southgate left it so late to change it up.

Anyway, runners up is an amazing achievement and I’m proud of them all.

littlbrowndog · 11/07/2021 23:39

Well done England. Young team you did great 🙌🏽🙌🏽

ReviewingTheSituation · 11/07/2021 23:41

The Olympics isn't just individuals - take hockey for example. To play hockey at the olympics is a hockey player's dream - like the world cup for a footballer. It's a tournament with groups and knock out stages. And the teams that get silver and bronze will accept the medals with good grace and stand on the podium with the winners.

I totally get that they are disappointed, but those medals are far from worthless.

Waitrosedisaster · 11/07/2021 23:41

I'm not sure why people are getting upset with posters who dare to make anything but a positive comment on tonight's game. England have done fantastic to get to the final. Admittedly, they did not play as well as Italy tonight but they held them off.

Rashfords penalty was awful. I appreciate he's a nice person etc etc, but that doesn't mean he cannot be criticised. It's a final and he's tap dancing around the field. Anyone watching that game could see he was going to miss it when he started all that nonsense. It looked like he was showing off and it was cringy as fuck when he couldn't even get it on target. Lesson learned I hope, just play the game next time instead of all these poor attempts at mind games with the goalie.

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2021 23:41

I am very proud of the England players, Southgate and all staff involved.
I have really enjoyed this tournament and sharing it with all of you on these threads.
It just wasn't to be

MrsJackGrealish · 11/07/2021 23:41

@ChocBeforeCock

Grealish was woefully misused the entire tournament.

Hes quick and sharp and we lacked that.

CantSayJack · 11/07/2021 23:42

The English fans trashed London hours before the match, imagine what they are up to now. No doubt they’ll turn on the black players who missed their penalties despite the fact they wouldn’t be where they are if it weren’t for the young black talent.

llm24 · 11/07/2021 23:42

not read all the posts but poor show from the senior players not stepping up and taking a penalty and putting the immense pressure on the shoulders of these young players

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2021 23:42

@Bitofachinwag

Thanks for this thread, it was great fun until after the game ended and some posters started getting rude about players and patronising other posters.
Yes, thanks for the thread. I'm sad that the game ended the way it did and that this thread has taken a bit of a turn.
RedToothBrush · 11/07/2021 23:42

In 1996 i went to Wembley for two euro96 matches and it remains one of the best experiences of my life.

When England went out it was devastating and crushing.

Tonight, I'm bummed we didn't win. But not crushed.

I am very much consoled by the fact we looked like a team in a way we never have. They played well and can hold their heads high.

On balance Italy played better overall but it was England who showed the sparks of brilliance that were wonderful to watch.

And i am not left with the feeling that i had in either Italia90 or Euro96. Or our other in glorious or heartbreaking exits from a tournament.

And i think what im left with is disappointing, but still pride and most importantly a feeling that despite the result we weren't losers either. We surpassed expectations. Southgate went one better than he did. Better than we'd done in my lifetime.

I'd have loved to win.

But it wasn't to be.

I don't feel the frustration I did with those who missed. They are kids and i hope Southgate looks after them. Its not the same as it was before. Its a feeling that we are a team with a future ahead of it and there will be other opportunities - it never felt like that before. It felt like a team performing to the level it should. Giving 100%. Without the egos.

Role models who transcend football and are there for each other rather than a bunch of individuals who just happen to wear the same shirt occasionally.

And thats it. The heartbreak part isn't there. Not like previous years.

It didn't feel injust or as if we were robbed by a dreadful foul or cheat that went unnoticed by the ref. There isn't someone to blame.

I hope that I'm not alone in this. I hope that people have enjoyed the moment for what it's been at a time it was really needed. I hope the press does not rip them to shreads.

Its been a blast.

UrbanRambler · 11/07/2021 23:44

Rashford was an idiot, he tried to be clever and it backfired. It's a real shame, but he's only human and not the first sportsman to make mistakes under pressure. Apparently Italy had possession for two thirds of the match, so I think they deserved to win really.

I'm more concerned now about what will go on in London tonight, with all those disappointed England fans. I hope the police have the resources to keep things orderly if needed.

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2021 23:44

This thread has been funny and upbeat throughout, I think the latecomers that arrived late to be negative after the event hadn't RTFT and just ploughed in. Maybe they could start a negative thread and get it off their chests.

Teddy1970 · 11/07/2021 23:44

This is the first English team I've a really liked, I hated the John Terry, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney era, they looked like they were doing you a favour by just turning up, this young team just seem like a decent bunch of blokes led by a good manager.

RedToothBrush · 11/07/2021 23:45

If you'd have said England would pretty much match Italy in a match pre tournament, I'd have taken than as a good measure of how well we were doing.

To do it in the final and miss out by a whisker... Yeah that is still special.

Motleyvegetables · 11/07/2021 23:45

Couldn’t agree more @RedToothBrush

I’ve lurked on these threads throughout the tournament. Thanks to you all for making it so enjoyable to be a part of.

Lampzade · 11/07/2021 23:46

Dd has just told me that racists have been leaving racist abuse in Saka’s Instagram.
Monkey emojis, calling him a pussy etc

Terrible

Sunbird24 · 11/07/2021 23:47

Football’s still coming home, it just wants to see a bit more of the world first.

BrozTito · 11/07/2021 23:47

Haha london 'trashed' my arse . Scotland fans trashed london but that was swept under the carpet in the tradition of scottish football
