Bloody sick of the bashing England are getting on social media! Absolutely unacceptable and they should be so so proud of themselves for getting to the final! It was a tense game and to keep up the defence for that long is bloody amazing!

Losing faith in humanity now!

@LuluJakey1

I thought Italy were gracious in their lining up to applaud the officials and to applaud England. England should have done that for Denmark in the semis- Denmark were gutsy through the whole tournament- but England didn't. The young ones pulling the medals straight off tonight was petulant - poor show, they need to grow up and learn about accepting defeat with grace and sanguinity and the same for success;they are both fleeting and fragile.

I felt sorry for the 3 penalty takers- too big an ask to put them on at the very end and ask that of them.

Sad for Gareth Southgate and his team.

The Italians were better overall tonight but England can be proud of how they have done.

Where exactly did you expect the English players to 'applaud' Denmark? It wasn't a final. And if you'd watched a final before, you'd know that taking off 'losers'' medals is pretty much the norm in football.

Can people stop criticising Marcus Rashford ffs.?
He’s going to face a lot of shit from some of the tabloids and on Twitter.
Let us temper our language

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2021 23:30

DH thinks (he knows more than me) that you have to volunteer to take a penalty. And there were other players on the pitch that should have but didn't. I do not know if this is factual but if it is that's a bit bad.

ReginaaPhalange · 11/07/2021 23:30

No one done anything wrong! Not one individual is to blame for the score! So much for be kind!

Whinge · 11/07/2021 23:30

Saka has a great career to come and he shouldnt be just remembed for this.

I agree, and really hope he it doesn't haunt him like it has Southgate. At only 19 he really does have a bright and exciting future, and it would be awful for this to be a cloud over his career.

Timeisavirtue · 11/07/2021 23:31

@Tippexy

Exactly *@Waitrosedisaster*. If you’re going to play silly games like that then you need to be CERTAIN you’ll score the penalty.

It’s one thing to get the shot on target but then have it saved by the goalkeeper, but for Rashford to have not even hit on target after that ridiculous performance was embarrassing.

Do you watch football often? I’m assuming not... rashford takes his 100% of the time and almost all he’s succeeded. They all have thier own ways of taking and sometimes they don’t work out. Take Jorginho for Italy, he’s scored 9 goals for Chelsea all penalties and he takes them the same way each time, his got saved tonight, it’s not just about the takers it’s also about the goalkeepers.
SallySycamore · 11/07/2021 23:31

It makes me feel optimistic about the World Cup.

IcedPurple · 11/07/2021 23:31

@Zerogravity

Because in the Olympics silver is still better than many other competitors. In a football match between 2 people, it is not Eh? It's not between 2 people though. What about all the other matches? Tbf I don't normally watch the medal ceremony but I can't be bothered to get up! (I have also never seen players cut up the net to take home!!)
But they already know before the match that they were in the last two. So getting the runners-up medal isn't an achievement at that stage. It's not the same as an Olympic event where there could be 10 or more contestants, and only 3 get any sort of medal.

Yes lets. The bashing will be full on tomorrow. With a bit of underhand nasties for good measure.

At the end of the day England did well.

Lampzade · 11/07/2021 23:32

I am really proud of the English team and I think that Gareth Southgate is amazing

We have heard several police sirens in the last few minutes. Scary

That's what I thought...but wondered if Southgate would take that approach as I think he volunteered. You win as a team and lose as a team - really hope those boys aren't pilloried. That's what I hate about England supporters/press - they'll be baying for blood now.

Nothing but love on my feed, if that helps? Every single post from my FB friends is positive, even from the non-English ones! It’s really nice to see
Idontlikeshouting · 11/07/2021 23:34

Oh Gareth just saying he decided on penalty takers!

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2021 23:34

Southgate just said that he made the call on who would take the penalties

OP posts:
stairway · 11/07/2021 23:34

We did better than I expected, our young players are only going to get better. We will bring it home from Quatar.

skoobidoobidoop · 11/07/2021 23:34

as Gareth just said (re penalties) : we win as a team, we lose as a team

ReginaaPhalange · 11/07/2021 23:35

@Sunbird24 unfortunately it's not the same for me on social media... time to rethink who I want to have on my friends list as I'm thinking differently about some people

CatherineMorland · 11/07/2021 23:35

I am really proud of the English team and I think that Gareth Southgate is amazing

^^ This 👏

ReginaaPhalange · 11/07/2021 23:35

DH has just shown me a video on Twitter of England fans attacking Italian fans down at the train stations :(

Southgate just said that he made the call on who would take the penalties
But if one of them didn't want to they had no choice? I don't get that really. But I guess GS is the manager.
CantSayJack · 11/07/2021 23:37

Forward Azzuri! 🇮🇹
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

BrozTito · 11/07/2021 23:37

In premier league teams they have a priority list for penalties so id be amazed if it wasnt the same for internationals.arrogant dickhead like ronaldo often overule them but there are still lists

Bitofachinwag · 11/07/2021 23:37

Thanks for this thread, it was great fun until after the game ended and some posters started getting rude about players and patronising other posters.
