@ReviewingTheSituation

You don't see Olympic silver medal winners taking their medals off on the podium. I get that they wanted to win, but to take it off before it's even properly on feels disrespectful to me.
This only happens in football and all the dirty play acting and diving cheating the referee and opponents hence need for VAR playback and extra eye to adjudicate. Football can do so much better if they are new sporting and less sportsmanship.
Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2021 23:24

Maybe Olympic silver medal winners don't want to take their medals off. Maybe they's love to but they can't? I don't see a problem with a football team taking them off though, and who is it disrespectful to?

MrsJackGrealish · 11/07/2021 23:24

@DuncinToffee

They have been amazing.

They've bonded well and looked like a real team.

They held Italy up for 120 mins.

Lovely young lads and I have both heartbroken and hugely fucking proud of them. If they were my boys, I'd be fucking glowing with pride.

Teddy1970 · 11/07/2021 23:25

Rashford always takes his pens like this, nothing to do with arrogance..

ChildOfFriday · 11/07/2021 23:25

@IcedPurple

I think a lot of people here must never have watched a football final before. It's pretty common for players to take off the 'losers'' medals as soon as they are given to them.
Exactly this. I think it would be better to keep it on too, at least until you're off camera, but it was done in the FA Cup and Champions League finals as well, and is the 'done thing' in football. The England team can hardly be singled out for criticism for it.
LuluJakey1 · 11/07/2021 23:26

I thought Italy were gracious in their lining up to applaud the officials and to applaud England. England should have done that for Denmark in the semis- Denmark were gutsy through the whole tournament- but England didn't. The young ones pulling the medals straight off tonight was petulant - poor show, they need to grow up and learn about accepting defeat with grace and sanguinity and the same for success;they are both fleeting and fragile.

I felt sorry for the 3 penalty takers- too big an ask to put them on at the very end and ask that of them.

Sad for Gareth Southgate and his team.

The Italians were better overall tonight but England can be proud of how they have done.

ssd · 11/07/2021 23:26

I don't know why some of you are even on a football thread when you've no fucking clue about it

Timeisavirtue · 11/07/2021 23:26

That’s too much pressure to put on a 19 year olds head. He shouldn’t have gone last either Kane should have, I’m not sure why Sterling didn’t take one as he regularly takes them for Man City. Proud of Saka for stepping up, proud of the boys regardless, they played a great game and penalties is a shit way to go out. Onwards and upwards...

Tippexy · 11/07/2021 23:26

Exactly @Waitrosedisaster. If you’re going to play silly games like that then you need to be CERTAIN you’ll score the penalty.

It’s one thing to get the shot on target but then have it saved by the goalkeeper, but for Rashford to have not even hit on target after that ridiculous performance was embarrassing.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 11/07/2021 23:26

Italy still unbeaten in a daft amount of games...

Mad to have the 5th penalty come down to Saka especially if not usually a penalty taker? Hopefully can bounce back from all of this.

Because winning silver in the Olympics is galaxies away from not winning the Euro/WC.

It’s two totally incomparable things. If you don’t win in a football tournament, you lose.

Don’t berate them for not wanting a sign of their failure round their necks.

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2021 23:26

MrsJackGrealish completely agree!

Just a shame that posters are now turning up,to bash the likes of Rashford, no need for that.

OP posts:
BrozTito · 11/07/2021 23:27

And its a misconception that you trick keepers to go the wrong way. Both sides entirely guess whch way to go. Statitics say the best penalties are far to one side and mid height

FlyingBattie · 11/07/2021 23:27

Because in the Olympics silver is still better than many other competitors. In a football match between 2 people, it is not. You can tell some people don't watch sport, it's not uncommon for this to be the case at all, England aren't being disrespectful ffs it happens most matches

It's a football tournament, so second is still better than most though?

ssd · 11/07/2021 23:27

That was to the ones saying why are they taking off their medals, so unsporting blah blah blah

I only went out to pick DH up, and this thread has gone proper downhill. Sad
TeddingtonTrashbag · 11/07/2021 23:27

Do they go home to their wives tonight?
I’ll bet Pickford will be getting his reward!😀

Rashford is amazing. And he tried what he thought was going to work.

He hit the post, he didn’t kick it down the wrong end ffs.

@ssd

Yeah exactly, it's one thing to comment on the game, but to pick apart stuff that's standard and single out players is pretty shite to be honest.
jadedagain · 11/07/2021 23:28

Rashford takes penalties like that all the time and he pretty much always scores. The pressure of a game like this was too much and it would be for nearly all of us!

MrsJackGrealish · 11/07/2021 23:28

I agree, especially when we were already behind.

Saka has a great career to come and he shouldnt be just remembed for this.

Idontlikeshouting · 11/07/2021 23:28

It's funny now listening to the pundits who were all convinced we'd win, now having to back track! Same old same old! Italy had 66% possession so deserved it overall, unbeaten for 34 games now or something?! It hurts but a good platform for next year now.

Howshouldibehave · 11/07/2021 23:28

@Terhou

At least we're spared the spectacle of Johnson taking the credit. Quite a major bonus.
Yes, I was thinking that!
Zerogravity · 11/07/2021 23:28

Eh? It's not between 2 people though. What about all the other matches? Tbf I don't normally watch the medal ceremony but I can't be bothered to get up! (I have also never seen players cut up the net to take home!!)

Absolutely, they did brilliantly.
